The Azathoth Continuum

In the far future, when poverty and hunger is a thing of the far, far past and no one needs to do any menial labor, the galaxy is an utopia.
Like, really. There isn't a dark underside of like mind control or slave labor- this is a true post-scarcity civilization. Anything is possible, anything you wish to do, you can. You can be a god of your own virtual universe, crowdfund a discworld, become the horrible mutant of your dreams, and then realize that was a horrible idea and go back, and just read all day for the rest of your very, very, very long life.
It truly is perfect.
Unfortunately, you will be far, far from this- in fact, you will be descending into an insanity like you have never seen.

Lore:

Spoiler

The Panarchy, Confederation of a Trillion Stars
Each area is allowed to decide how it rules itself, but it must send a representative to the Megarchy, or the Council of a Million, which manages larger megastructures and mediates disputes if requested, as well as dealing with galaxy-wide threats and enforcing sapient rights.

The Ăsydnvivfn: The first species that met with humans, these are the least humanoid of the three alien species. They have four tentacles sprouting from each  side of their long, flat body. They can stand on six or four or all eight legs, are mostly carnivorous and have four eyes- one on top of their bodies and one on the bottom, for giving upward sight when submerged and 360° vision when stood up.
The Vaeuevuv: A species originating in a large swamp, they have four thin, stork-like legs to wade through shallow water and mud. The swamp they evolved in was very, very rich in microscopic plankton and other nutrients- thus, long hairy tendrils sprout from their backs to collect this soup of nutrients. Needing no mouth to eat with, their two mouths are instead exclusively used for breathing and speaking, which is a sort of highly articulated humming.
They are about ¾ as short than the average human, and have four short fingers to grab things.

The Manaw: The Manaw are a very communal species from a colder planet. They are humanoid, but they have four highly developed eyes, have a thick coat of fur, and lack many of the organs that stick out of a human, including fingers, toes, noses, and ears. In the case of the fingers and toes, they instead use highly flexible pads to grip and balance.
Since they got the technology, most of them connected their minds using cybernetics, creating a low-level hivemind. Since then, they’ve updated it with miniaturized wormholes to allow for cross-galactic contact, and have permitted other species to join as well. Note that there are multiple subcategories and branches, and not all Manaw are part of this hivemind.
Plus the CONSTRUCT: A huge organization of sentient AIs from all sorts of origins, which acts as a sort of worker’s union for AIs.

Post-Scarcity

When you don’t need to work all that much, are essentially immortal, and the entire technological base of a near-Kardashev-3 civilization is at the tip of your fingertips, things get fun.
Cybernetic Enhancements: Everyone gets some of these, if only a basic level- letting you know the time, the names of the people you are talking to you, and so on. Nanites are also what makes everyone practically immortal, killing diseases and doing maintenance on cells and DNA.

Biological Modifications: Everything and anything is possible, but very extreme cases are rare.

Uplifts: One of the more restricted options, you can biologically and mentally uplift an animal to sapience. This is one of the less popular options, as the moment they become sapient they immediately gain all rights anyone else, and may or may not resent or adore their uplifter.
Experiences options: Hunting dinosaurs on an alien planet with WW1 technology, black-hole bungee jumping, mech suit racing, living as an ascetic monk for a century, if that’s your thing, and that’s just in the real world- the virtual world has long since gotten to the point where it’s indistinguishable from real life, which opens up an infinite amount of possibilities.
With the trillions upon trillions upon trillions of people, there’s enough artists, writers, and other creative workers in the galaxy easily outnumber the current population of earth by tenfold, leading to an unending stream of art that you couldn’t ever experience even a small fraction in even in the very, very long lifespans of the average person.

You, a handpicked team of experts, have been tasked by an activist organization (In this case, "activist" meaning doing things without months or years of bureaucracy from the Panarchy) with diving into Azathoth, a sapient, malevolent Matryoshka Brain  created by an ancient, extinct precursor race to house their minds in a utopia, which Azathoth descended into chaos and destruction. Your job while within this simulation is to take Azathoth down, and, if you can, save the people within. There are some... issues with this. however.
With the available tech, you can only be plopped into the simulation itself, which Azathoth has complete and total control over almost every aspect of, except some hard-coded things he cannot change. Luckily, he can't directly detect you or edit you since you are essentially an extremely effective computer virus. However, if you are killed in the simulation, you get kicked out and can't get back in.

In addition, no one quite knows what's going on inside- they know it's bad, but they don't know how. It could be just a sea of endless pain- if that's the case, you'll just be immediately kicked right back out, so it's a gamble.

====================================================

The null swirls outside as you float in intergalactic space, a wall of stars consisting of the Milky Way to one side and the void of intergalactic space to the other. However, between you and the infinite sea of nothing is one of the biggest megastructures you have ever seen- millions of kilometers of metal and electronics encasing a once-bright star.

Inside your small spaceship, you sit in a room with five ominous looking machines, each with a cranial interface, a needle and some other unidentified machinery.

You will be entering these machines shortly.
However, for now, you sit in some uncomfortable chairs across from singular human, and on the other side of the room an Ăsydnvivfn-shaped android paced back and forth across the room.
"Welcome," the human says. "I am Bysis. You, of course, know why you are here. So tell me, do you have any questions before you begin your mission?"

"No. It'll be just a quick fade to darkness then you'll be in. The needle is to paralyze you so you don't try to move around while you're in.

After that, however... I don't know."

The android continues to pace.

"Well alright, then." Melvin heads to one of the machines.

Name: Guentuv

Species: Vaeuevuv

Biological/Cybernetic implants: Universal translator that lets him speak and understand any language. He also has a laser printer embedded in his chest, which uses byproducts of he digestion to manufacture an infinite supply of paper, ink, and metal of any shape. He normally uses this to print contracts and treaties and the like, but the metal functionality will also let him fabricate simple weapons.

Skills: Ambassador and mediator. Guen is an expert at weaving words to get people to do what he wants. He can keep two separate conversations going with his two mouths at once.

Description: Guen keeps himself perfectly immaculate, with curled hair and well-pressed clothes when the situation demands it. He prides himself on maintaining a calm disposition at all times. He likes things organized.

Guen walked up to one of the machines, bracing himself. This task would require all of his control and poise.

As you all sit down into the machines and the android plugs himself in, the human, with an emotionless face, flips a switch, and nearly immediately, the world goes pitch black.
When the world returns, it takes a moment for your sight to return, but even before then you can feel the warm, rough feeling of asphalt. You're laying prone on the ground, and as you open your eyes you can see in front of you a great city of metal sprawling out.
But as you look closer, something is wrong. The city is in ruins- tall buildings seem to have their tops falling off, and you can see many have collapsed, piles of rubble just sitting between the other buildings.
Despite this city seeming old and ancient, you can't see a single living thing in sight. No plants, no animals, nothing...
