Adolin, Deadeye Whisperer

5 posts in this topic

The trial scene was so awesome.  One of my favorite in all the Stormlight Archive.  Adolin had been doubting himself and his usefulness to Team Radiant.  By the end of RoW, Maya is getting better, but they have not formed a Nahel bond.  Perhaps they cannot yet?  Perhaps their bond will be something else.  I believe Blended said that their bond "is" but also that he was not a radiant.

Shallan is starting to integrate.  Veil is gone (or absorbed or whatever the proper terminology is).  Shallan and Adolin's relationship is stronger than ever before.  Some had speculated that they wouldn't last, but I hope RoW puts that speculation down for good.  But Shallan also has a Deadeye that she is bonded(?) to.  Does she have the blade or not?  I am confused on that point.  She also is happily married to the Cosmere resident expert on restoring the bond.

Admittedly, Adolin doesn't know much of how he has done what he has with Maya, but no one else believed it was even possible.  I am certain he will seek to continue to revive Maya, and he may be able to help Shallan revive Testament.

So it appears the new place in the Cosmere that Adolin is creating for himself is the Deadeye Whisperer.  If full revival is possible, it would probably be more valuable to Team Radiant than just about anything else.  Imagine all the lost knowledge that would be recovered.  About the Recreance especially, but also about the Shadowdays, the Heralds, Honor, and other things we can't even guess at.  Not to mention the thousands of spren this could enlist for nahel bonds.

Shallan with two nahel bonds is also an interesting potential plotline.  Is it possible? I would suspect it has never been done before.  I am just speculating right now, but a dual-wielding Lightweaver would certainly pass the Rule of Cool.  Perhaps Radiant doesn't reintegrate and she rebonds Testament?  Lots of potentially cool resolutions to this.

I do think that Adolin is being foreshadowed as an Edgedancer though.  His nascent bond with Maya the Deadeye is a perfect example of remembering those who have been forgotten.  I was struck by the comment he made to Notom (I think) about how the Honorspren don't think Kaladin and Syl should have bonded.  He response was asking if perhaps they should ask Syl what she thought on the subject.  (I will listen to those who have been ignored).  He is acting like an Edgedancer, and I hope he will be one someday.

One thing I noted was that, when Maya ran out of strength in trying to speak at the trial, he somehow passed strength to her through whatever bond it is they have, with a warmth rising deep within him, in a kind of Reverse Nahel bond (Lehan Bond?).

Where a Nahel Bond is when a Radiant spren, which is Investiture made sentient, "fills in cracks" in a human's Spiritweb, Adolin here gave of himself - perhaps from the very "Spark of Life" Investiture that comprises a living soul - to help to fill in the gaps in Maya left from the Recreance. (A bit reminiscent of my life to yours, my Breath become yours, except Adolin is neither dead nor the Rosharan equivalent of a drab, I don't think.)

And, now that we know that there were no deadeyes before the Recreance - and that it's all linked, somehow, to some web of Connection and Oaths that zombified all the parsh who were Connected to Ba-Ado-Mishram when Melishi trapped that Unmade in a gem - perhaps in SA5 they'll find the gem and release B-A-M... Which restores all the deadeyes?

I was wondering if the reason all those Deadeyes were converging on Lasting Integrity was because they somehow sensed that Adolin was restoring Maya. So yeah, I'm all for Adolin the non-radiant Deadeye Whisperer.

...which at the same time, as noted in the OP, is an extremely Elsecaller thing to be.

So put me down now for SA5 seeing a releasing of B-A-M (where deadeyes were only A Thing after its Connection-entangling imprisonment), combined with Adolin doing the Deadeye Whisperer thing, resulting in a restored Mayalaran bonding Adolin. Where some Bondsmithy action by Dalinar (or Temporarily Sane Ishar) is needed in some way as well.

BTW, I wonder who Notum will end up bonding. After his outburst at Adolin's trial, surely he was one of the honorspren who decided to Go a-radianting... You'd think he would want to bond Adolin, but his Lehan Bond (as I called it somewhere) with Maya probably precludes that.

Or maybe it doesn't? People with dead Shardblade bonds have bonded spren - Dalinar when he bonded the Stormfather, Elhokar was about to, and most likely Renarin only bonded with Glys after gaining a Blade (seems doubtful he'd have spent the ten days needed to gemstone-bond a dead Blade hearing that screaming the whole time). So if this Lehan Bond is like that, maybe Adolin bonds Notum... Then revives Maya... And becomes our first dual-Order double-bonder (where Shallan is apparently a double-bonded Lightweaver)?

I'm wondering if the gathering were the cognitive corpses of the spren bodies that Ishar was killing nearby. Or perhaps somehow drawn to the pain that was being felt there by the dying spren.
