Problems with tense

11 posts in this topic

When reading some stuff on the Arcanum I discovered some issues when it came to tense especially when paraphrased but also when not so I was wondering is this bothering anyone else and if someone could we just start correcting these and/or clarifying in footnotes?

Sure will edit this with examples

Weltall (paraphrased)

That gave me the opportunity to ask one last question, about Feruchemical chromium and whether storing fortune would cause you to risk experiencing really improbable things, like the entropy curse in The Dresden Files.

Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

He said he wasn't going to answer questions about fortune, that the MAG shouldn't be taken as gospel on this point (I don't remember how it works there and didn't mention it, he brought it up on his own) and that he's planning something different than we might be thinking, for how that mechanic will function.

Arcanum Unbounded San Francisco signing (Nov. 30, 2016)

Weltall (paraphrased)

I asked if Nazh's knife didn't glow to Kelsier's eyes because the metal wasn't from Scadrial generally or whether it was a metal with some particular property.

Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

RAFO.

That is in line with the paraphrased reports, and we are not comfortable altering them. The original phrasing from the reporter could matter. We sometimes may correct clear terminology errors, but I don't think adjusting this is necessary.

Ok that's what I thought and if I literally can't understand something I'll try to get a second opinion but if my second opinion can't either I'll post on this thread

Since those were my comments... the reason the tenses are like that is because I was writing it as an after the fact report; I didn't record his exact responses and I didn't want to put words in his mouth.

I agree with you on how you worded it. I think your instinct is absolutely right.
