thejopen27
So we learn from the Glyphs shown in one of the Oathbringer art pages that Kalad is the Alethi glyph for Eternal, we also learn that the suffix Lin or Rin in a name means "Born Onto" in an Alethi name from the Dalinar chapters where he names Adolin and where he thinks about Renarin's name. Adoda means light and Lin means born onto so Adolin means Born onto Light. Renarin means he who is born onto himself because Evi didn't fully understand the Alethi naming conventions. So does Kaladin's name mean Born onto Eternity? Kalad meaning Eternal and the 'In suffix meaning "Born onto". (Ignoring for a second any other people with Kalad in their names...)

Quote Questioner Did Kaladin’s name come from anywhere in particular? Brandon Sanderson No. I'm sure the word paladin was in the back of my head, but it's not like he shares much with like an actual paladin. His name was Merin in the initial version and it was-- it didn't work, he wasn't a Merin and all the fans-- all the readers were like "this name just doesn't work" so I spent years hunting for the right name for him, and that's the one I ended up with. It's really based-- it's Kalak, which is the Storm-- not really the Stormfather but people y'know. Most of the names you'll find are based off one of the Heralds in some way. So he's KALA + DIN, Kalak and din is a suffix. Isaac Stewart We do have a meaning for it though. Can I tell them the meaning? Brandon Sanderson Ehhh, have we canonized it? Isaac Stewart We have canonized it, and we have told people before. Brandon Sanderson Then yeah. Isaac Stewart It means "Born unto Eternity". Brandon Sanderson ...I mean, it means that in the same way that names mean something, like my name means-- But when they're naming him that they aren't thinking that. What they are doing is picking one of the Heralds and making a name out of it. But my name technically means "Dweller by the Beacon", but really what it means is "He was the son of Alexander". Bold mine. I read that as "Dweller by the Bacon" Nice to know Kaladin's name meaning, hadn't seen that WoB before.
thejopen27
This fandom is too reliant on WoBs and doesn't do enough work on it's own. Brandon is by far the most loose lipped author I've ever seen. I wish he answered fewer questions on the books in general.

Given that the worldbuilding is very complex, I’d say that it is a good thing that he speaks so much. It creates great interaction between him and the community, and his answers are times things that spawns more questions than they answer. What I can see though, is that there are tons of WoBs for people who are new to the fandom to go through in order to learn everything. It can defenitely be seen as a steep learning curve for some.

He just provides confirmation.
