twenty second of the sun
Do we have any confirmation of wear the smoke goes when nightblood kills something ? We know all investiture is keyed to certain shards and if the black smoke is investiture then who does it belong to ?

Eternal Khol
Its corrupted breath, or just corrupted investiture in general now that he's not on Nalthis. so i think he just corrupts whatever investiture he gets. on Roshar he’s leaking corrupted Stormlight. Brandon Sanderson Anyway, Nightblood is named for the smoke he leaks, and he originally had a different name when he was created. Vasher himself dubbed the sword Nightblood after he had used it to kill the woman he loved. The blackness that leaks out is actually corrupted and consumed Breaths, the ones that Nightblood leeches off anyone who draws him. Quantus
We dont have actual confirmation, but a lot of implication. Leading theories are that he absorbs it and is becoming progressively more invested as he eats things. Investiture cannot be destroyed, and in most instances where investiture is "destroyed" it actually just returns to the Spiritual Realm. But since Nightblood is destroying in all three realms, and is apparently more invested than when he started, it makes that he would be absorbing it, so it goes somewhere and "is not leaving the system". Quote Questioner Does Nightblood annihilate Investiture? Brandon Sanderson Investiture cannot be created or destroyed. It can only change forms. But, anything more than that is a RAFO. Oathbringer release party (Nov. 13, 2017) Quote clyguy Someone tries to Awaken a carrot, and eats it. What happens to the Investiture? Brandon Sanderson The Investiture will be released into the Spiritual Realm like most Investiture that is destroyed. Shadows of Self release party (Oct. 5, 2015) Quote uchoo786 So just for clarification, once Nightblood consumes investiture, that investiture gets recycled? That's what I've always assumed. That it enters the cognitive/spiritual realm? Brandon Sanderson The investiture he consumes is not gone forever--it's not leaving the system, so to speak. General Reddit 2016 (Jan. 1, 2016) Quote yulerule *Written:* So somewhere it says that the number of Breaths doesn't determine the power of the object. But are the number of Breaths directly tied to how much Investiture is in an object? You're repeatedly said that Nightblood is ridiculously heavily Invested, more so than Shardblades, Honorblades, or the Bands of Mourning. But it only has a thousand Breaths, which doesn't seem all that much from the point of view of the God King--Tenth Heightening, over 50,000. Brandon Sanderson So this is a RAFO, but you're starting to ask the right questions there. Okay? *Writes:* RAFO Footnote: Needs image attached to entry 4067.
