Questioner

So you said that different Investitures from different worlds can fuel different Investitures, right? Would that mean that you could potentially use Stormlight for Allomancy and/or Feruchemy.

Brandon Sanderson

Yes, a little harder with the metallic arts than, for instance, Nightblood is the easiest example. He can just feed on whatever investiture is around.

Questioner

Could he feed on the Dor from...

Brandon Sanderson

He could totally feed on the Dor.

Questioner

Would you need to have a special sheathe to do that or?

Brandon Sanderson

No, what you would have to do for him on Elantris is you would have to open some conduit to the Dor that's persistent, like a light or something, and he will suck through that, he would probably end up sucking the whole aon.

Questioner

Sucking Elantris itself?

Brandon Sanderson

Sucking Elantris itself would work, yeah, but you're gonna be in trouble if he sucks up the whole thing, which is totally possible.

@Dwmaster204, absolutely nothing wrong. sooo many people love to talk about Nightblood, and esp. him and hypotheticals

The Dor is made how Investiture. Night blood consumers investiture, so if night blood was sent to Sel/The Dor will it suck it up?

Nightblood would feed on the Dor.  However he would probably not consume the whole thing.  According to this WoB

If it's possible for Nightblood to actually interact with a Shard, what would happen?

Brandon Sanderson

A Shard would try to stay very far away from Nightblood. Nightblood could not plausibly destroy an entire Shard but the Vessel could be in danger.

Starsight Release Party (Nov. 26, 2019)

Nightblood can't consume an entire shard and the Dor is made of two.

Also you did nothing wrong and welcome to the shard!

Questioner

If Nightblood was to attack one [a Shard] and decided it was evil, could he destroy enough of that Shard to seriously weaken it compared to other Shards or not really?

Brandon Sanderson

I mean it would be such a drop in the bucket. To actually weaken the Shard. Like, there is so much out there. This would be hard to do. I won't completely nix it, but let's just say there's a lot that Nightblood would have to...

Questioner

Hypothetically could Nightblood Splinter a Shard?

Brandon Sanderson

Uh, Splintering a Shard takes more power than Nightblood has.

Can Nightblood damage or kill a Shard? Is he that powerful?

Brandon Sanderson

Nightblood is not powerful enough for-- *makes weird/hesitant ehhh sound*

Argent

Can it damage?

Brandon Sanderson

Damage? Yes. How damaging? Is a subject to discussion. Nightblood contains a lot of Investiture.

if you were to chuck Nightblood into a Shard that had the intent of Evil would Nightblood splinter it?

Brandon Sanderson

Splintering is a completely different process from what Nightblood does. :)

Stormlight Three Update #5 (Nov. 20, 2016)

Beyond that, we see Nightblood sated and drowsy when Dalinar does his Unification trick in OB, that's just a part of Honor's Investiture.

There's been a lot of questions about this specifically, like for example, if you used an aon rune to constantly feed night blood would it destroy that investiture system and the usual resounding answer is no, but for an already weakened shard or an already weakened splinter it could be potentially catastrophic

This particular situation, Brandon has answered that the problem is that Nightblood would feed on the Dor through the Aon and feed on the Aon itself, which would collapse the link to the Dor. Throwing Nightblood at the Dor in Sel's CR would probably result in something similar to the hypothetical of what would happen if you chucked the sword into the mists on Scadrial, namely that the big cloud of gaseous/plasma-state Investiture would actively try to avoid Nightblood.

the conduit part is important. if you can force open a connection to the Dor that remains then Nightblood would keep feasting (maybe with pauses...). to what end, idk.

I rather expect something like this to happen with Honors perpendicularity. as long as Dalinar keeps it open, Szeth should be able to draw from it.

from the WOB it also sounds like Nightblood will be offing a vessel eventually :-)

Maybe, but the tricky part is that the Shards don't have physical bodies, they can manifest a form that can interact with the physical world, but it's not the whole shard, just a reflection of one.  The vessel's body gets sublimated by the sheer amount of investiture, and it's kind of, distributed throughout the cognitive/spiritual aspects of the shard until the vessel is killed; Leras and Ati, and Vin, all their bodies reappeared after they died and were separated from the Shard's power.  So I think it would be kind of tricky to find something that Nightblood could target about the Shard/vessel, unless a LOT of their investiture/essence gets focused in one place.

Maybe if the vessel's consciousness was focused within its perpendicularity when Nightblood attacked?
