Okay. I haven't quite yet finished Emporer's Soul, but in the prologue of it, Kriss mentions the Ire. These people also appear in Mistborn: Secret History. Is there a connection? Kriss appears in Secret History, and I believe (it's been a while) she advises Kelsier to go to the Ire. What could a people in the.. spiritual realm(?) know about the planet of Sel?

Same people.

They are in the cognitive realm.  The realm of the mind.  Some of Oathbringer takes place in it but it looks a bit different because they are on Roshar.  They know about Sel because they are from it.  They are originally from Elantris(when an Elantrain gets old and enters the pool they become an IRE).

If they're from Elantris, why do they end up on Scadrial? Also, where is this mentioned?

Think of it as metamorphosis.  The IRE have bases all over the cosmere.

Why did the Elantrians came to Roshar in the first place? Because the question came up after I reread Elantris, so...

Brandon Sanderson

Are you talking about... specifically... the old ones? Yeah, why were they on Roshar? So, those specific individuals - the Ire, as we call them - are a group of Elantrians that are not representing all Elantrians. They were there. The one you've met is there for a specific reason. The Ire are involved there. They're mostly... where you've seen them, is on Scadrial so far, but they're interested in Roshar. You are talking about the lighthouse keeper, I assume? So, the lighthouse keeper, wouldn't... would be counted, I guess, as one of the Ire and is there for a specific purpose, but it is not related to their general purpose, that they're trying to achieve.

How's that for being vague? I'm sorry.

Is it still there?

Brandon Sanderson

Yes, it should be, yes.

Sazed is aware of it?

Brandon Sanderson

Yes.

Okay, do they have on other planets?

Brandon Sanderson

They have outposts but you will rarely find something as highly well constructed as that.

The Ire are Worldhoppers from Sel, their upper echelons are composed of Elantrians. In Mistborn: Secret History, their skin tone is mentioned as being silvery, they speak of Devotion, one of the Shards on Sel, whose Vessel's name was Aona, from which comes the word Aon. Their name, 'Ire', is the Aon for age. They seem to be capable of a lot, Khriss said they'd had been at it a lot longer than she had. They knew how to overcome the biggest problem with Selish magics: that they get weaker the further one goes from the region they call home, They seem to be using giant pipes to draw energy from the Dor. They knew how to traverse the Cognitive Realm safely, they knew things about the Shards, how to manipulate Connection, etc.

We know that were pre-Reod Elantrians, that is they were from before the earthquake that created the chasm which caused the city to fall, the Shaod and Aons to malfunction, and affected the Seons, especially those who were bonded to Elantrians. Yet the Ire didn't intervene, so they might not have been affected by it.

I have a theory that the Ire were the original builders of the city of Elantris.

The answer to that is a bit of a spoiler if you haven’t read Mistborn Secret History yet.

The Ire are on Scadrial because they know the final showdown between Preservation and Ruin is coming up, and they’re trying to claim the power of a full shard for themselves.  They created an orb which increases the connection of the user to align themselves with Preservation so they could take up the power when Leras died.  They need the connection boost since as non-Scadrians they don’t have any Preservation in them.  However they had the misfortune of running into Kelsier who pretended to be Ruin, stole the orb, and when Leras finally bit it used the orb to take over Preservation as a cognitive shadow.  Since he wasn’t fully alive he wasn’t able to go toe to toe with Ruin, unlike Vin when she Ascended.

We dont actually see any of them use AonDor. As far as we know they just found a way to pipe the dor to them so they could “fuel” themselves and still have the passive effects of being an Elantrian(immortality, accelerated healing, etc...)

I too think that they originally built Elantris.

on a side note, do you think Alonoe is named after the lake? Or is the lake named after her?

I think its the latter.

I am a bit late to this, but I don't think it is a given that any Elantrian that enters the pool near Elantris automatically becomes part of the Ire. The Ire seem to be a group, and I would expect that an Elantrian would be able to join, but could refuse if they want. We just don't really know enough yet.
