Sixth of the Dusk - Meekers

3 posts in this topic

I'm re-reading Sixth of the Dusk and i totally forgot about the little mouse-like creatures called "meekers"

they are Semi-intelligent creatures that can project their thought into someones mind. the person/persons they are speaking to can project thoughs back at them

in the book it is said that they used to be able to kill with one bite, but over the years, have become accustomed to the trappers.

they are capable of remembering things and following orders(they remember dusk and the "task" he gave them), asking for things(food),and even projecting not only their thoughts but emotions as well.

Dusk is trying to train them to bite other trappers(he gives them food so they dont bite him)

these little guys seem rather out of place on the island.

does anyone have any theories as to what underlying mechanics allow them to become smarter than your average animal and project their thoughts.

they can project their own thoughts as well as letting others do the same.

is this the result of some kind of bond like the aviar and the worms? or did they just evolve like that?

There could be a bond involved since the meekers could communicate using Sixth's language, albeit rudimentarily. The Aviar's intelligence might also be boosted by the bond. Some species of birds are just more intelligent like crows & parrots. I don't think their intelligence stands out that much, the Nightmaws were also fairly intelligent animals. I think meekers are more intelligent than quite a few animals and this is further enhanced by bonds.

I got the sense a bond was involved, albeit much more loosely than even the Aviar
