Children of Shards?

5 posts in this topic

I’ve already submitted this to the list of questions to ask Brandon, but I thought I’d let the community pick this apart.

Can/have Shards had children after ascending to become Shards? I believe that they can have children because they can manifest themselves in the Physical Realm and interact with it. As far as whether they have had children I have no specific people in mind but I wouldn’t be surprised if we learned about a couple.

What are your thoughts?

We know that children of a Shard's Vessel would be a bit more than the mundane:

Questioner

He wanted to know, if a pregnant woman took up one of the Shards--one of the sixteen Shards--would the child <still be born without> any god powers?

Brandon Sanderson

It would have an effect.

Questioner

Has an unborn child ever been Ascended?

Brandon Sanderson

Ascended to be a Shard? No, that has not yet happened.

Questioner

Maybe not a Shard but...

Brandon Sanderson

Oh. Ascend to like a... No. I would say no. It hasn't ever happened. It's not implausible that the mother could Ascend and the child would... But it hasn't happened.

Also, have you read Aether of Night?

Here's an even more direct WoB, albeit a paraphrased one:

Quote

Paladin Brewer (paraphrased)

Are Shard Vessels able to have children?

Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

Yes they are.

Paladin Brewer (paraphrased)

Even Sazed, with his body being a eunuch?

Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

Yes, though technically all of Scadrial are the children of Preservation and Ruin.

Dang I searched for a WOB but didn’t find it! Thanks for that. I guess my question has been answered.

I have read Aether of Night, although it’s been awhile so there may be a detail I’m missing...
