Tenth heightening

So we know that someone of the Tenth Heightening has Perfect Invocation and Color Distortion.

Perfect Invocation: Awakeners of the Tenth Heightening can draw more color from the objects they use to fuel their art. This leaves objects drained to white, rather than grey

Color Distortion: At the Tenth Heightening, an Awakener gains the natural and intrinsic ability to bend light around white objects, creating colors from them as if from a prism.

So this is just a theory

But what if when someone of the Tenth Heightening, say Susebron, were to awaken something, the color in it would then drain to white. Now his Color Distortion would kick in and create colors from the useless white, which could then be used to Awaken even more items.

It could be a way to Awaken when you've used all other colors around you

Welcome to the Shard, @Lifeblesser!

I think that's exactly what happens at the 10th Heightening

Since Awakening works on pigments I don't think that would work as fuel. The distortion creates colour that people can see but not any "substance", the object is still white.

If you shine a red light on a white wall, could you use the color from that to Awaken?

Brandon Sanderson

Ooh, good question! I would say you would end up leeching the color out of the lightbulb that you were shining through.

I just remembered that WoB. But if it doesn't work as fuel for awakening, it has to serve some purpose besides making people look "godly"

Why it does have to serve a practical purpose? Perfect pitch and lifesense have zero impact on Awakening and colour recognition doesn't have a major effect.

I think it's a neat idea but yeah, the prismatic effect of Color Distortion is a visual thing that shouldn't produce any actual color 'fuel' for Awakening. I think it really just is something there to look visually impressive. It's an extension of the color-enhancing aura that everyone with Breath has, just turned up to eleven. The Perfect Invocation perk is the functional one since it lets the Awakener get more out of the same amount of pigment.

That said, there might well be other awesome things someone at the Tenth Heightening could do which we aren't aware of yet but as Khriss herself puts it, this is rather difficult to test. Maybe if she manages to find Vasher and pin him down long enough to ask him a few questions... xD

And welcome to the Shard, Lifeblesser!

I have suspected that the 10th Heightening Color Distortion effect could hint at 2 potential flavors of an Endowment version of Lightweaving:

  1. Awakening + controlled Color Distortion = physical puppet show made by projecting specific coloration onto Awakened objects that can actually perform actions
  2. Auras shaped directly without need for projecting onto a physical object, to produce insubstantial illusions

I'd imagine the first to be more likely (and frankly more practically useful), but both are wild speculation.  Not sure how much control would be possible here if this suspicion proves true to any degree, but most of the new Returned are unaware that they can control their physical forms as Vasher does and ignorance regarding Endowment abounds on Nalthis during the Warbreaker era, so who knows...

I think it's an entirely reasonable theory.  I also think it is incorrect, but only because there is something specifically weird happening regarding the actual role of Color in the cosmere, something He's holding back for a forthcoming book (Im assuming Nightblood). There is a WOB that confirms something else is happening with the color drain, something that explains why an object that has been drained to White by Perfect Invocation cannot then be used by a normal Awakener and be drained to Grey, then back to white, etc etc in a cycle.

If an Awakener with Perfect Invocation turns something white, can they or another Awakener then use the white thing back to gray, back to white.

Brandon Sanderson

I actually thought about this. My answer ended up being a no.

xnkvbo

Can you give a little explanation why?

Brandon Sanderson

I will delve into it more as I delve into the nature of color and why it's relevant to multiple magics in the cosmere. So it's a RAFO.
