Memo 3

memorandum

TO: Executive Management

FROM: Norman Garrings

CC: Deborah Stancel

DATE: 25 Vinuach, 3098

As many of you are aware, it has been over 13 days since Expedition Leader Warrick’s last log was received. No attempts to contact Warrick or any of the other seven members of the initial team have met with any success. Judging by Warrick’s last log, the situation down there may be critical. In light of these events, and the continuing need to survey and understand this cavern system, I propose we gather another, larger, expeditionary force. The goals of this force will be two-fold: to find and, if possible, rescue Warrick and his team, in addition to continued mapping and exploration.

This new force will be led by Deborah Stancel, who has my full support. Please copy her on all future correspondence regarding the new team and its operations.

It goes without saying that any and all copies of Sawyer Warrick’s Expedition Log are confidential and are NOT to be distributed to any personnel or team members that are not on the Executive Committee, with the sole exception of Deborah Stancel. Anyone found distributing confidential materials will be disciplined at the highest level.

Regards,

Norman Garrings

Deb Stancel closed her laptop and rubbed at her temples, squinting into the bottom of her cup and wrinkling her nose at the light dusting of coffee grinds sitting there. She glanced at her watch - a real watch, none of those absurd fabrial devices some Rosharans swore by - and sighed. Half-past nine. With one final glance at her watch, Deb rose from her desk and tugged at the end of her uniform jacket. It was a deep olive green with orange trim, and it matched her pants. Indeed, it matched nearly everything in her cramped little office, as was fitting. This was Alleycity Excavation, and those were Alleycity Excavation's colors. If she was lucky, she'd find a few more competent souls to pad ACE's ranks today, and a few more orange and green coveralls would get churned out for them.

No such thing as luck, she reminded herself, smoothing her hair as she rounded the desk and headed for the door. She needn't have bothered; her hair was already as smooth as a sheet of ice, her bun a perfect ring of blonde. A place for everything, and everything in its place. That was how things got done - that was efficiency. And if Deborah Stancel was one thing, she was efficient.

She slid a clipboard and pencil off the end of her desk before turning the knob on her door and walking out into the hallway. People scurried this way and that, accountants, engineers, pencil-pushers. They bobbed their heads to her as she passed them, and she returned each nod with one of her own. Smaller, of course, but still. Decorum was to be rewarded. Everything in its place. As she neared the large meeting room at the end of the hall, she spied Farren, one of her assistants. He gave her a deep nod, then straightened up to look her in the eyes.

"Ma'am," he said briskly, awaiting her reply.

The corner of her mouth quirked up just a bit. "Good morning Farren. Has anyone arrived yet?"

"Not yet, Ma'am," Farren said. "Though, it is only nine thirty. The recruitment ad specified a ten o'clock start time."

"Nine thirty-six, to be precise," Deb corrected. "It is always important to be precise, Farren. Still," she said, catching him before he could apologize, "you are right. Arriving too early is inefficient. Let us wait then, and see who has answered our call."

Farren looked at her, a question in his eyes, though he did not voice it aloud. Deb sniffed a little. "Speak, then. I can practically hear you thinking."

Her assistant blushed a bit, but did as he was told. "Waiting, well, it just seems a bit... dramatic for you, Ma'am."

Deb raised an eyebrow at Farren, almost cracking a true smile at the young man. "Contrary to popular opinion, Farren, I am human. Allow me this one failing."

Farren blushed deeper and cleared his throat. "Perhaps I should go in and, um, wait for you then, Ma'am. Let the applicants know what to expect. If... if, um, that's alright with you, of course."

Deb jerked her chin at the door. "Best not to keep them waiting then," she said, and watched as the young man slipped gratefully into the meeting room. She would have laughed, but then, it was not the time for laughter. Not here, not now. Not with what was at stake.

Whatever is down there, we'll need all our wits about us. All the wits we can get.

Laughter was for later. For now, she waited.

Kendul Adeel checked his ornate pocket watch as he walked to the ACE building. It read 9:57. He was going to be late. Or well, late to being early. He looked behind him, at all the destruction. Even six months later, the city was a mess. He subconscious started rubbing his neck, thinking back to what had happened. He sighed, and turned back around. He knocked on the office door.

"Hello? This is the ACE Office, correct? I has business here."

Farren started, looking up from the small desk perched in the corner of the office meeting room. He checked his own watch, then jumped up, striding across the room to tug the door open.

"Welcome," he said, pulling himself up to his full height - which wasn't terribly much, but it was better than slouching. Silently he cursed his inability to grow a beard. "Please, do come in."

Farren swept his arm across the meeting room, which was arranged simply with rows of chairs, some small raised tables, and a large spread of food and drink. "You'll find everything here is safe to eat, and made in house. No offense to any... shall we say more adventurous palates, of course. But any and all food is just food. No spikes. ACE is a guild neutral organization. My name is Farren Tashav, I'm Leader Deborah Stancel's assistant. She will arrive shortly. Please, feel free to ask me any questions."

Althea had heard of the ACE. At first she had thought about sending someone else, a spy someone to report back to her, but then she had decided to go herself. The last time a new organization had appeared, it had ended with a war, and she'd decided to take a closer look on things. Form her own opinion. If she went along with whatever they had planed, she would see that later. She could always send someone along. For now, it was more important that she had a clear picture of what was going on and that meant going herself. Besides, maybe it would be a good change to simply be there and to see what happened. Something different for a chance.

She arrived at the building and then stepped inside, looked around for a sign showing a way where to go.

Bare feet padded silently against the cobblestone streets as Whisper dodged between two other pedestrians, the two gave a brief, pitying look to the somewhat worn and ragged shirt that she was wearing, tucked into an even more ragged pair of pants. The city was no stranger to orphans, but the third quadrant wasn't particularly close to any of the slums of town, they weren't seen as frequently here.

Before either of the two could stop to say anything, Whisper had already moved on. Nimbly sidestepping a horse carrying some Scadrian noble, she managed to find a quiet side street. Usually this disguise worked well for going unnoticed, but in this part of town, and for this job, it was probably better that she looked somewhat more respectable, though possibly a little desperate still.

A puff of light trailed down her pale, cracked lips, twining around her scrawny neck and draping over her too-thin limbs and torso. In the wake of the Light her rags changed to a clean but affordable linen shirt and some worn but well-kept trousers. Her short hair grew into a longer braid and lightened to a soft brown. Her body seemed to lose some of its emaciated appearance, it still appeared slight, but not starving.

Finally she gave herself a thick, jagged scar along the neck, stretching over her jaw and ending at the cheek. Physical signs like that made it easier for people to understand when she struggled to speak to them, and usually deterred any questions.

She looked herself over in a small puddle that had formed in a depression of the stones, checked to make sure nothing seemed unnatural and that it was close enough to her body that people wouldn't notice anything from physical contact. Finally satisfied she made her way back out onto the main streets and towards the door of the building she'd been told about.

Alleycity Excavation. Word was they'd dug into the ground beneath the city and found something already there, unexplored caverns. Filled with darkness and sights unknown. What dwelt in the deep where nobody saw?

She'd barely stepped into the door when she had to stop, noticing another woman already standing in front of her and looking unnaturally pale.

Althea heard footsteps approaching her, and turned around. She made sure to move slow enough to appear calm and fast enough that she would have a change to react should the person want to attack her. Her mind streched into the braclet Devaan had given her, touched the stormlight swirling inside of it, readied herself to act. But they weren't acting in an offensive way, at least not now. A girl with long light brown braid and a cruel looking scar over her mouth was standing behind her, and so she stepped to the side, out of her way. Another one for the expedition. She looked her quickly over, noticed her face, the cloths, made sure she could remember her face for a later background check.

Brashen was sitting on her shoulder as he usually did, holding on to a strand of her hair. Not that he needed to, but she'd noticed him doing that ever since the attack six months ago. It had been close, too close. Several times too close. And somehow her spren seemed different. Althea didn't mind him holding on to her, staying close but it made her thought about spren and their feelings, and the consequences of the surrounding world on them. They had talked for hours and Branshen seemed - fine. Different but fine.

She formed her face into a polite, neutral mask, carefully hid her thoughts while a part of her immediatly regretting coming here. She should have sent Zokora instead. Zokora was better with people. At least she didn't dislike talking to most. Althea never had been the most sociable one. A good book in a quiet corner usually suited her better, although she rarely had the time anymore. Instead she spent her time talking to Ghostbloods, to strangers, to everybody she needed to talk to.

"Hello. I'm Althea. Are you also here for the exploration?"

She addressed the woman, went with something short and unassuming. Whoever it was, hopefully a short question would spark some kind of reply.

Whisper gave a small grateful nod as the woman began to step to one side, making room for her to enter into the building. She'd already partially turned away and began stepping past when the woman, Althea, spoke up and introduced herself in a polite, if brief, manner. Whisper shifted her step, widening her distance from Althea a little in case anyone else entered the room. She gave Althea a quick nod, briefly making eye contact.

"Wes." She let out a cracked and strangled whisper, even that volume causing her to wince a little in pain.

She paused, unsure how to continue the conversation, or whether she should simply move on, but then she realised the name the woman had given her. Althea was not a very common name, but it could simply be a coincidence. Her eyes flickered briefly to Althea's arm, that was where most of them kept their tattoos.

The woman, Wes, another Wes as some part of her brain noted, spoke up, said nothing but her own name and winced in pain. Althea noted it, filed it away for later use. As she hadn't reacted with her own voice, it had to do something with the scar, or maybe the act of speaking herself. She would have to observe that for a while. She was about to dismiss her for now, to go on, walk deeper into the building, when she noticed the woman's eyes flicker towards her arm. Towards the tattoo, that was there, safely covered by long sleeves and a jacket.

It wasn't surprising, there was probably exactly one white haired Althea in the whole city, and she'd deliberatedly decided against diguising herself. It would be easy, change her hair, use another name, and those that didn't knew her, would have been fooled. But a disguise was also a prison, a place where you hid. And she had stopped hiding years ago. If she went back to hide her hair and her eyes, if she started to be normal again, no, she was good the way she was. Hiding had only made things worse.

Without saying a word she looked down at her arm again, and then back at the woman, without confirming the silent question. She doubted there was a need to do so.

Kendul nodded, and walked inside.

"Thank you, most of what people know seems to be rumors, so it'll be good to get confirmation about some things. How much have the caverns been explored?" He asked, eyeing a muffin.

Fasi Stem walked toward the building. She wanted to be part of this if only to see if the rumors were true. Fasi jumped as a loud sound as a door slammed. Not wanting to be seen in the open she quickly covered herself in a lightweaving making her invisible. As a man she did not know opened the door she slipped in and saw a person standing in the room. She walked up to them (still covered in the lightweaving) and asked. "Hey, is this for that tunnel job?" in a timid voice. @ZincAboutIt

Karin looked up at the building in front of her, comparing the address with the one Aylitha had given her. She was still not sure what to think of that. On one hand, a department head knowing you meant that something about you managed to catch their attention, but at the same time, it meant you managed to catch a department head's attention. Especially with the things DA members did that wasn't always a good thing. Still, this job seemed interesting, and it wasn't as if she was being asked to spy on what was going on, just help with exploring. Besides, it would be nice to be away from the other researchers for a while. All the biology and science was interesting, but some of the researchers gave her the creeps.

Shrugging, she stretched her arms, trying to relax, and walked through the door. Seeing other people already standing around in the meeting room she decided that she could join the queue later, instead sitting down to wait, listening to what was being said to those still in the queue, hoping that it would tell her what to do.

Farren gave the front of his jacket a little tug and stepped backwards, simultaneously satisfied and slightly overwhelmed at the sudden influx of people. He was careful to keep his expression neutral, pleasant, and restrained - just as Director Stancel expected of him. He nodded to the white-haired woman, recognizing her as a member of the Ghostblook Triarchy, and gestured inside the meeting room.

Great, he thought, we open the applications for two minutes and already some Guild head comes in to muddy the waters. He said none of this, of course, moving on to the young woman - more a girl, really - with the light brown hair and somewhat threadbare appearance. Farren took in the nasty scar running down her neck, sparing a moment to wonder at its origin, when another newcomer shoved one of the ACE recruitment posters into his face.

"Hey," she said brusquely, "I'm here for the job interview?"

Farren stepped back a bit and gave the woman a polite smile. He was about to respond when another voice, seemingly coming from nowhere, timidly asked "Hey, is this for the tunnel job?"

It was only through sheer force of will that Farren kept himself from jumping two feet into the air. He swallowed a yelp, smoothed his hair, and frowned.

Time for some crowd control. He propped the door open and moved to the front of the group of new arrivals, then clapped his hands twice to get everyone's attention.

"Welcome!" He called loudly, then waited a moment for everyone to still before continuing in a slightly softer, though still clear, voice. "Welcome, everyone, and thank you for arriving so promptly. This is, indeed, the ACE applicant meeting. First, let me take this opportunity to thank you all for responding to our call. The discovery of the subterranean cavern network has been a most unprecedented surprise to us all, and we are grateful for all the talented individuals who have come forward to aid us in exploring them. My superior, and the appointed Expedition Leader Director Deborah Stancel, will be along shortly to give more information regarding the mission."

"Please feel free to help yourself to something to eat or drink, and take a seat wherever you like. We are expecting a few more arrivals, so I will refrain from explaining too much and risk needless repetition. Suffice it to say that the cavern network below Alleycity is an immensely complex and potentially dangerous labyrinth of tunnels, caves, and crevasses. Before we can even attempt to continue with our initial project to construct the Alleycity Subway Network, we first need to understand how and where these tunnels lead."

"While we wait for any stragglers to arrive, please take this time to fill out the questionnaire located on each seat. I have extra copies if needed. This is a simple survey of your relevant skills, Investiture, any Guild affiliations, age, and anything else you feel we should know. Pens are available on my desk here, though I will ask that you all bring them back."

Farren smiled at the group, then glanced at the back door. Director Stancel would be waiting there, watching him. He suppressed a shiver, rolling his shoulders a bit, and waited to see if anyone had more questions.

Fasi dismissed her lightweaving and looked around the room. Not impressed she want over to get a drink and some food. She grabbed a sandwich and made her way toward the room that was indicated by the man. She pointedly did not fill out the questioner.

Karin stood up to take one of the pens, taking a small snack at the same time. Sitting back down she quickly ate the snack, then got started on filling out the form. Skills: biology, she thought. Investure: Epic, shapeshifter. Guild: DA, Bioscience. she hesistated for a moment, wondering if it would be smart to fill that in. Shrugging she put it there anyway. Age: She paused there, wondering what she should fill in. She thought she was twenty, but there was always that uncertainty... Besides, it might be better to fill in her apparent age, to prevent questions. Sighing she ended up filling in twenty, adding a question mark behind it. Filling in the other questions as well she brought back the pen, grabbing a second snack on the way back. Sitting down again she ended up taking a look at the other people present, curious at who else had shown up for this.

Althea noticed more and more people milling into the room. Most faces she hadn't seen before, but that was fine. She would have to make her own picture of those willing to head into the tunnels. Carefully she had her face remain her usual polite but neutral mask, hid her emotions, her thoughts behind it. She moved slightly away, so that her back faced a wall, without really removing her attention from Wes in front of her. It would be interesting to see if the woman pressed the point about her guild.

When someone from ACE, that pointedly failed to tell them his name, adressed them she noticed his eyes resting on her for a moment before moving on. Inwardly she smiled at his attention, knew that she stood out, like an firespren in a strom. ACE would be dumb if they hadn't researched who led the guilds. Well, it most likely would save her some time with the questionaire later. She had no intention to tell them anyting they didn't knew yet.

But his little speech made her look up and around and she noticed a familiar face. A woman, sitting at one side of the room. Aylitha. The age was slightly off, from the woman she remembered, but there was no doubt. Probably some effect of the power she had used. But it meant the DA was here as well. No surprise here. In constrast. It would have been strange had they stayed away. After the last time, she doubted anybody would take a new organization lightly.

Deliberatetly she rested her eyes on Aylitha for a while, made sure the woman would notice her gaze.

The air vent on the ceiling began leaking shadows and at the very edge of audibility came the sound of a crackling fire. The grating fell in, followed by a figure in a very deep blue cloak, hood perched and face shrouded in darkness, trailing shadows. A rumbling voice came from deep within the hood as he sat. "I am here. You may truly begin now."

Did it have to be this overly (and somewhat tastelessly) dramatic? Absolutely not. But it's more fun (and cheesy) to write this way. >:)

Looking around Karin noticed an older white-haired woman looking at her. Feeling curious, she stood up, walking over and taking a chair next to her. "Hey," she said, greeting her. "The name is Karin Dreier, nice to meet you."

Interesting. So a new name for this organization. Fine for her.

"Althea Tenira. The  pleasure is mine."

She replied politely and moved to be able to see both her and Wes. Nodding to the questionaire she added:

"You filled that out already?"

Although she doubted that Karin would write down the truth.

"Ah, nice to meet you," Karin replied. "I already filled it in," she added. She paused for a second, breathing in. She still forgot about that sometimes, one of the downsides about spending time in a place where breathing is considered a sign of being a poor scientist.

Sarah strolled over to the snack table and slipped an apple into her pocket. Then she grabbed a questionnaire and a pen. She jumped as, close by, a girl appeared out of thin air and began to fill a plate. Sarah followed her into the other room and sat down nearby. "Hey," she said, ignoring the girl's attempt to strike up conversation with another man. "I'm Sarah. If you don't mind me asking, how in the rusting world did you do that?"

It has come to my attention that at least one person has taken my "confidentiality warnings" in the Records section of the OP seriously, and has not read them. I deeply apologize in this regard, as I simply assumed that everyone would just click through all the spoilered posts anyhow and greedily consume all the secret knowledge (like I would). This "secret document dossier" is just meant to add another layer of fun to the plot and create some backstory intrigue. You are all thoroughly encouraged, nay, implored to read all the documents in the dossier, including the confidential ones! However, I trust that this knowledge will remain OOC in nature - you, the RP'er, will be the one reading them, not your character. But I wanted to give everyone a little glimpse of past events, future stakes, and a feel for the eerie secrecy shrouding these caverns. Cheers!
