Why not use the Spiritual Realm?

Karger

Question

Why not use the Spiritual Realm?

Perpendicularities allow anyone to access any of them three realms yet nearly all world hoppers chose to use the CR as apposed to the spiritual realm which could get them anywhere instantaneously.

I think there’s not enough we know about the Spiritual realm to know it’s a feasible form of transportation.

While it's not canonized yet, Brandon's current plan for how humanity got from Ashyn to Roshar involved the Spiritual Realm, which.rather suggests that it is a feasible form of transportation... if you know what you're doing. There's also Aon Tia and the Dakhor monk's methods of teleportation which are point-to-point and so probably send the users through the Spiritual. We know the former requires you to be extremely precise if you don't want to end up in the middle of the ocean, or a rock face or something equally unpleasant and we don't know enough about the latter vis a vis how you specify a destination but since all Selish magic obeys the same principles it's probably similar. So yeah, Spiritual travel for non-Shards is feasible but it seems to be considerably more complicated than hopping over to the Cognitive and walking, and potentially more dangerous.

@CrazyRioter hit on the precision risk but there's another possible factor at work and that's how the Spiritual appears dangerous to look into with the unprotected mind. Leras tells Kelsier that spending too much time looking into it could break his mind and the sensation was clearly unpleasant. Transitioning bodily into the Spiritual as a method of travel is probably even more dangerous even before factoring in the extremely high probability that any screwup in travel will leave you in a vacuum.

I would guess that attempting travel via the SR is extremely dangerous without some specific power that does the navigation for you. It's basically like location doesn't exist so you could end up anywhere, it would be easy to end up in the wrong place, which statistically speaking means "in hard vaccuum".

This is why I think it's mostly unfeasible travel through the Spiritual Real. Kelsier wasn't able to properly comprehend simply looking into the Spiritual, so my guess is going into it is beyond human ability to understand

no worries. it can get complicated.  in thi case, Shadesmar is the Cognitive realm, specifically Roshar's expression of it, and actually is what most people use for wordlhopping.  The Spritual realm is different.  it is where the shards' powere usually comes from and there is no such thing as location in the Spiritual realm, which is why this question was posed: to worldhop using the Cognitive, you still have to travel, though it is usually a lot shorter than the physical, but if you could go through the Spritiual realm, there would be no moving at all, just start in one location in the physical (or cognitive) realm, move to the spiritual, then exit in a different location in the physical (or cognitive) realm.

The spiritual realm is handy for worldhopping, so it might work, but there are some problems. 1. Everywhere that there is land on Roshar, there is sea in Shadesmar. So you have to have a large amount of stormlight. 2. You have to be an Elsecaller or a Lightweaver. 3. You can enter from anywhere, but only exit from certain places. In general, traveling via Shadesmar is very hard.

That is the Cognitive realm.  spiritual is different
