Sorana's AMA

Sorana

Recommended Posts

Hello =)

when I asked around for ideas for a 'good' 4000 post, it was suggested to do an AMA. I have to admit I was unsure whether I should do it or not, but alas Ene had a really convincing argument, so here you are.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them. (Great surprise: I don't promise to answer them all (correctly).)

How has your day been?

What’s your favorite color?

Who is your favorite Sanderson character?

What is your favorite non Sanderson story? (can be a book, show, movie, myth, song, etc.)

What Sanderson creature would you most like to have as a pet?

And happy 4,000th post!!!

Who?

What?

Where?

When?

Why?

How?

4 or 76?

Playing a game of chess against one another, who would win: Kelsier or Dalinar?

Playing a game of checkers against one another, who would win: Spook or Pattern?

Do you use a needle threader? Or, better question, how do they even work? Why was it invented? Who wasted their time coming up with an invention that's such a bother to figure out how to use properly? (Those things that keep me up at night... ^_^)

And finally, want a cookie? (Hemalurgy-free, TUBA certified)

Four thousand?! That's amazing. Congratulations!

I don't have any funny questions for you (sorry to disappoint) but I do have a random one that I thought of a while ago but haven't had a good opportunity to ask anyone until now. I'm asking based on the assumption that you've read a foreign language copy of a Sanderson book at some point. (If you haven't, just ignore this.)

Anyway, Brandon likes taking ordinary words and turning them into names or magical terms. Usually, when a book is translated, names aren't changed unless they're problematic. But do you know if the same holds true for words Sanderson has hijacked? For example, is the Shard Honour still called that, or is it altered? What about investiture? I don't know why I'm thinking about this stuff, but now that I am, I'm super curious what editorial decisions get made during the translation process.

I did? I mean, of course I did! SUPER CONVINCING.

Here's a question. Out of all your characters, who's your favorite? If your favorite isn't an Alleyverse character, who's your favorite out of your AV characters?

The chess game. They will start arguing with each other and one of them will leave the room before they are finished.

Pattern

No, I don't use them. I have no idea how they work, but I think they were invented for people with bad eyesight.

I only read a translated version of Elantris, but I relayed your question to some friends of mine. Words like 'ruin', 'honour', 'surge' all get translated. Those like 'allomancy' only adapted to fit the language better (Allomantie). So it's a mixture between keeping them and translations.

Sorana. That's why I'm using her name here. She lived through so much. I can literally spend days talking about her adventure/ telling them to others. In case you've read some of Lena's stories, they all happened to Sorana.

And in the AV it's Althea. She changed a lot, but I like who she has become. Although she really has to get better at some point, or I'll end up with a crazy character.

The best experience of your LARPing adventures?

Being mind-controlled by a demon in the middle of a forest. I ended up with another mage there, we got separated from the group after freeing the hostage and while they escorted her back the two of us plus my apprentice tried to undo the damage the demon had done. I sent my apprentice for help, but it was a long way back to our camp and so me and the other mage ended up being controlled by the demon quite a while. Was pretty cool, a huge ritual and we worked very well together while summoning that creature fully into our world.

(And the faces of the gamemasters when I told them my character's level and that she's really good at that stuff - rare that I've seen someone pale that quickly)

(We undid it afterwards and cleaned everything up. But it was great. Usually I only get to use blood magic as an NPC.)

What about the worst?

Bad convention, with bad game masters, that had a railroaded timeline. No matter what you did, each situation would solve itself at a given time of the day. Sadly, they even talked about their plan while we were washing our dishes, so there wasn't even some element of surprise left...

Has there been a time when you didn’t bring enough socks?

Yes. Sadly. I always bring extra, but there was one convention, where we had several feet water standing on the campsite and additionally I fell into a river. But then everything was wet these five days. Still at least dry feet now and then would have been great :P
