Sanguine Wielding - A Magic System for a Novella I'm Writing

This is a magic system I've had in the works for a while now! It's for a novella I'm writing called Darkest Night.

Sanguine Wielding

Sanguine Wielding is a magical art used most notably in the Dimmi Archipelago of northern Rillo. It is a power passed on genetically, from parent to child. The user of the magic, known locally as a Wielder, uses the power by drawing energy from one of five powerful demons, known as the Insur Council. Each power source gives the Wielder a different ability, and each Wielder is born with the power to draw from only one of them.

When a Wielder uses the power of the Kings, they enter a state of mind known as Manic State. When in Manic State, the Wielder's instincts take control, and the Wielder acts less controlled, with their base personality traits left unchecked. The longer the Wielder is in Manic State the more intense the instincts become. After leaving Manic State, a Wielder will fall into a depressive state that varies in length depending on the time spent in Manic State.

Powers

As stated previously, there are five different powers a Wielder can have, each connected to a different member of the Insur Council.

  1. Bone Giant
    1. Wielders connected to the Bone Giant can control and manipulate their bones and muscles while in Manic State. They can use their bones as weapons that protrude from their body or grow lager into towering figures up to twenty-five feet tall.
  2. Riverman
    1. Wielders connected to the Riverman can manipulate blood. They can use their blood or the blood of others as a weapon, suffocating or pushing away enemies.
  3. Chaos King
    1. Wielders connected to the Chaos King can create illusions of any of the five senses, although only two can be combined at once.
  4. HarvestIady
    1. Wielders connected to the Harvestlady can control the bodies of the dead. Their exact control lessens with each raised corpse added to their army.
  5. Silver Glow
    1. Wielders connected to the Silver Glow can purify a small area of any magical traces, but only once

 Crossing the Border

Wielding is dangerous. Using it can become addicting, and the depressive episode that follows it can be unhealthy for the Wielder. This cycle can reach incredibly dangerous levels. If a Wielder stays in Manic State for too long, the depressive state that follows will put the Wielder in a state where they can only act while in Manic State, for the depression becomes too overbearing. The Wielder, if not stopped, will stay in Manic State for so long their mind shatters, and the broken Wielder's powers are vastly increased and they go on a rampage, destroying everything they can see for about a day. When the day is up, or the Wielder is knocked unconscious, they will lose all of their powers and become an insane, blubbering mess

I like the interesting way that the risks built in put limits on the magic system making it the opposite of some system's cure all attitude!

I agree, it transforms the magic into something incredibly dangerous to use.

How much agency to the demons have and what is their relationship to the Wielders?

The determination is sort of like a Zodiac, and the ability is discovered when a parent asks their child to Wield. It was first discoverrd accidentally when early Dimmi people accidentally went into Manic State on a hunt
