As long as you don't mind alienating yourself from friends and family and potentially never seeing them again. :P

Or from losing touch with pretty much everyone as social views and culture shift.

Yes, you would lose touch with everyone, and you would have to effectively become a savant. But you know there are some people who would make that choice, to get crazy rich.

Imagine investing in Amazon or Apple before they became big.

Remember that Cadmium bubble is big. She could bring her bf in there with them. Let's say she buys a small cottage somewhere out the way. She banks her considerable life savings and takes her guy to the cottage. She spends a couple years honeymooning it while constantly flaring Cadmium. They come out 100 years later having aged a couple years. She's richer than Warren Buffett and the tech is advanced enough for her to get some instant noodles. Wax and Steris would be dead, as would her father, which would be sad. But who else does she really care about? If she wanted them there that bad she could bring them into her bubble too.

Not to reign on the parade but that might not be a great way to make money. Wayne calls cadmium a “rare and expensive metal” in their economy. So the money gained by interest would have to be more than the money lost from burning which means you’d need to have a fairly large principal (fortune) already for burning cadmium to help you make more money.

That is a detail I wondered about. So, for a few certain rich people it could make sense, but it doesn't make sense for the general public yet.

That's a temporary obstacle. Where I live I can get a pound of Cadmium for $12. By the time Era 3 on Scadrial rolls around, we can see things like that there, much like is already happening with aluminum in Era 2 itself. It's just a matter of time. Granted, that does mean it's a little useless in the short-term, but as time passes it becomes more and more feasible.

Not only the metal cost, but in order to make this idea remotely worth it, she'd have to be able to know with a really high degree of certainty that whatever her investment structure is has a high enough rate of return to outstrip inflation.  In our current (American) economic environment, putting money into a bank savings account and waiting 25 years will net you less effective money than you started with.  Plus everyone you know would have aged 25 years without you!
