Rock and Shadesmar

18 posts in this topic

I'm sure that this has been talked about but I couldn't find a topic about this so here it is. I think that Rock (and maybe other horneaters) can see at least partially into Shadesmar. He's able to see spren when nobody else does, and mentions towards the beginning of OB that he could see something of the rest of the sprens body. How does the ability work, and why does he have it? Does it have anything to do with that story he said about Horneaters living up in the peaks (when explains why the peaks are hot in WoR).

Yup, Some (but not all) Horneaters can see partially into the Cognitive Realm, letting them see more of the Spren's true forms and see Spren like Syl even when they arent trying to be seen; The horneaters call those that have that ability "alaii'ik".  It's because they are part Singer.  The Herdanzian's are too, though I dont think we've had any indication that any of them can see spren the way alaii'ik can.  In fact, on Roshar anyone with Red Hair has distant Singer blood.  Horneaters can also literally eat shells and metabolize it in a way other humans cannot.  They also have somethign called "throat teeth", so have that little bit of nightmare fuel...

Questioner

I really like how you have different fingernails. *inaudible* Because I barely noticed, rereading for Stormlight, you've got the He--

Brandon Sanderson

Yeah. Herdazians.

Questioner

Herdazians.

Brandon Sanderson

That's because Herdazians are-- have Parshendi blood. Parshmen blood. They're one of the halv-- they're one of the mixed breeds. Horneaters *inaudible* too.

Questioner

Horneaters, um.. they're not *inaudible* with Parshendi are they?

Brandon Sanderson

Yes, they are.

Questioner

That's where they get the red hair then.

Brandon Sanderson

That's where they get the red hair. And they actually can-- they call them Horneaters because they eat shell, and they actually can metabolize it which humans can't. Yeah. They've actually got, actually-- they've actually got different teeth than humans have.

I was just listening to Darn Carlin's Hardcore History podcast and Dan Carlin was talking about Genghis Khan's habit of seeing the potential in anyone, even an enemy. He was specifically going over the story of Jebe, a soldier who shot Genghis Khan in the neck and was recruited by the Khan because of his skill. This, at least to me, bears a striking resemblance to the final scene in the first flashback of [Oathbringer]. [Brandon] can you confirm or deny my suspicions that this scene was directly inspired by the real life event?

Brandon Sanderson

Yup, that's where it came from! I read a history of Genghis a number of years back, and loved this story, which was included there (though said to be just a legend.) Since I based old-school Dalinar on Subutai, a Mongolian general, I thought that this would be a perfect inclusion.

The origins of the Mongolian-Dalinar link, by the way, can be traced back to a friend of mine, Bat-ultzi, a Mongolian who went about always claiming to be "The Great descendant of the Great Genghis Khan." He'd throw his shoes at people if they offended him. He was such a character that I got very interested in Mongolian practices and history.

More tidbits. Rock and his culture started Mongolian long, long ago. (98-99 era, when I first wrote him.) As Roshar in general (and the Alethi in specific) became more Asian in look and less Semitic (though they are still a mash-up) I decided to push Rock's people in the direction of a human/parsh hybrid strain. This also was part of moving Rock himself from Yolen to Roshar, following after Dalinar and some other characters, who came earlier during the original Dragonsteel / Stormlight split in the early 2000s.

These changes drove the Horneaters away from Mongolian influences, though I can't say specifically where the Polynesian/Russian mashup came from. I liked how it read, and felt the linguistics supported the accent. These changes, of course, had a domino effect that resulted in the Veden people gaining their occasional red hair and fair skin from Horneater relation, which means Shallan is part parshman--though the relation is distant at this point.

That is something I could have gone my whole life without knowing.

I think Rock can see into Shadesmar, at least partially. He is able to see spren in the physical realm that nobody else can see. Also, he mentions being able to see part of the sprens body towards the beginning of OB. Perhaps this has something to do with the story that he told his friends about why the Horneater peaks are warm? Any thoughts?

I thought I posted this topic already, so if I did I'm sorry.

I think it’s been confirmed some Horneaters are closer to the Cognitive Realm than normal people, which allows all of this to happen.

That is REALLY COOL. how did that happen though - people marrying parshendi? voidbringers? what happened? Are Veden part voidbringer? And do parshendi only have red hair? I thought they could have black hair too.

Yeah, I just checked. what did you mean by Cosmere on the brain? Sorry it's a bit of an obtuse question.

Leatherbacks (and the other turtles that have that) are one thing, but it's just so much worse on a person.

That quote up above of crossing races and the red hair gives me some Hallendren royal family vibes.

Why would you post in two different forums?  Especially after @Quantus already answered your question?

Was it because the original was in the wrong forum?  You can just use the "report post" button to ask a mod to move it to the proper forum.

Thanks, I didn't know. I'm rather new to this, and am still trying to get everything down.

does this mean that there is the possibility that Shallan might have these "throat teeth?"

Just wanted everyone to think about that image

I mean theoretically, perhaps, but she hasn't been shown to be eating any of the hard shells and stuff to know one way or the other, and I think something like that would have been noted.
