Are you born a misting?

8 posts in this topic

Reading mistborn my understanding was that you are born as a misting or mistborn and that ability shows when you snap.

But reading the stormlight archive and some WoB's provided to me by @Invocation make me think that maybe when you snap you actually aquire the powers, you didn't previously have them.

Does any one have more information regarding thus matter?

You are born with your latent Allomantic powers. Vin for example snapped at birth due to complications and a difficult childbirth.

This WOB confirms it:

Quote

PrncRny (paraphrased)

How and when is the type of Misting you become determined? Can you tell what type of Misting you are before you Snap?

Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

It's determined at birth. The cosmere by combining 3 aspects of self. Your physical self, mental self, and spiritual self. The spiritual self is tied to the Investiture of the world that you come from. When an Allomancer snaps, a piece of their soul is broken and some of that power leaks into them, giving them their abilities.

I don't really understand the question because either way you need to try using the metals to see if you snapped, so what would the snapping show which you can't see by just trying it out.

Maybe i phrased it incorrectly. My question was, are you born a misting but unlock acces to that power when you snap. Or are you a regular human and actually first aquire the power when you snap.

It appears it is the former

Yeah it's the former. The potential is there in your DNA, but without the Snapping, it never activates.

Recall the mist-sickness and how Preservation forcibly "snapped" a bunch of people who, under normal circumstances, never would have become allomancers.  He was able to do this because many Scadrians are born with an affinity for the metallic arts (IE: they have the theoretical ability to manifest access to a specific allomantic and/or feruchemic power) while lacking the necessary Connection/Investiture to be able to ever bridge the gap to gain access without external influence.

Basically:

  • Metallic arts powers are assigned at birth
  • Some (and maybe most or even all) Scadrians are born with theoretical access to a power but, for reasons that are not totally clear, they can't snap without additional Connection/Investiture being supplied to them from an external source
  • Fine details are largely ROF'd at this point; it is generally expected that many details will become clear with the next book
