The North Sea

Klo has been absent from the RP for a while. I've been meaning to post more, but things kept coming up. -_- My explanation for that is that he was travelling here (on a safari style tour), to the Other Side of the World (but he got a little lost, so it took him a while). The discussion in Xinoehp512’s topic about this has been fantastic, so I’d like to canonize it. If you want to drop a character in here, awesome! If you just want to make a post detailing an NPC’s conveniently descriptive narration of their surroundings as they slowly get eaten by a carnivorous plant, that’s cool too. That’s what the dozen generic passengers are there for.

Personally, I’m open to the invention/introduction of creatures/beings that aren’t in Brandon’s books. If people want to use this as their sandbox, go right ahead.

Klo raised his hand protectively to keep the ocean spray from hitting the glossy brochure he held in his hands. “I should have paid extra for one of the seats higher up on the platform,” he muttered to himself. Riding on the back of a Tai-na was a nauseating experience, one he didn’t intend to ever try again.

Near the front of their ride, a tour guide was loudly giving a running commentary to an audience of about a dozen other tourists. “Don’t heed the water!” he told them. “’Tis much nicer than t’was yesterday. Some ‘thids ‘most sank us!” He launched into a lengthy tale of how he had singlehandedly lured them away with a knife and a mango.

Klo shook his head, and resumed his reading.

The island has a diverse ecosystem. Many areas are unexplored, and are therefore considered dangerous to travel in. However, a surefire way to stay safe is to-

The tour guide snatched the brochure from his hands. “You read too dang much!” he said exuberantly, sending spittle flying into Klo’s face. “Y’all don’t need books about islands. I’ll just tell you all you need to hear!”

Klo groaned. The guide had not proven himself to be a reliable source of information so far. His claims about their destination varied by the hour. One minute he’d tell the passengers that roving bands of koloss and Parshendi used the hills as their battleground as they fought for territory, the next he would say there was an entire kingdom of fish-people living beneath the North Island.

As the man droned on about his alleged experience training a Meeker to be his pet, Klo held his right hand up beside his eye to block the morning sun, allowing him a closer look at the island that was just coming into view over the horizon. Finally, he thought to himself. I can finally get down to business.

I'd like to set it on one of the Floating Islands of the North Sea, that's where Klo's headed.

Description: (written by Xionehp512)

Spoiler

Far in the north – in fact, as far north as there is –- lies a sea, aptly named the North Sea. Contained within that sea are majestic floating islands, mutated by the alleycanes that pass over the area. They feed on stormlight to grow to enormous sizes, and fill both the air and sea.

Anatomy

Each island is supported by a layer of rock on the bottom. On top of that rests dirt, which supports the many plants that grow on the surface. In the center of the island is the island’s gemheart, which holds the spren that lets it float. The gemheart is fiercely guarded, as its destruction would almost certainly result in the death of the island.

Flora and Fauna

The mix of plants and animals on each island is specific and unique. They live in connection with each other and the island. The sapience of the island depends, in a large part, on these organisms. It, in turn, can influence or control them, depending on their level of sapience.

Life cycle

The creation of a new island begins when one island shares some of the organisms that live on it with another island, providing a connection between them. Using this connection, they form a new gemheart and place it in a new form. Once this is done, they will find a spren of the right type to bond the gemheart. After this, the island is released from its parents to rise into the air. Eventually, the island will become too big to float any longer and will sink from the air into the water.

Sorry for the brief seg-way in the main continent, then it moves to a different place on the other side of the world.

Mack sat in his office, drawring up plans for his Mk 10, when he heard a knock on the door.

"Come in!" The door opened to reveal an aged gentleman, with spikes sticking out of his skin everywhere. "Hello Mac. Long time no see. I heard about the GB ball. Are you here to talk about the next part of the plan?" Mack reached under the desk to trigger the secret doorway. Even though this place was secure, it was always worth it to have a little extra security in place.

"Yes its been to long. I'm not actually here to talk about the ball. This pertains to something far more important." Mack's eyebrows rose. Nothing was more important to Mac then the plan. It was all he ever talked about! "This is about The Council."

"The Ghostbloods?"

"No, THE Council. Lets go to the safe room." Mack stood and pressed the button under the desk for the secret doorway. A bookshelf moved to the side that had been obscuring a hallway. Cliche, he knew, but it got the job done. They walked quietly down the hallway, side by side. This was a matter of the highest security. The Council of Mac's. Mack hadn't even heard those words since he was sent by them to be Mac's new host all those years ago. Why would Mac be concerned with them now? They arrived at the safe room, and put up the Aonic shields to block observations.

"Why are you concerned with The Council? They haven't talked with me in years."

"There are rumors of people exploring the other side of the world. If they find the temple, I'm dead." Mac was nearly shaking with fear. He had been given two charges by the council. Failing at either one would result in the complete destruction of his soul. And he would never be able to rejoin his brothers on the council. The second of his charges was to protect the temple, and let The Council know if people could discover it.

"So that was your charge? Something to do with the temple. Seems mundane. But what does that have to do with me?"

"I need you to let them know that it could be discovered. I'm not allowed to approach them any more after nearly failing at my first charge 17ish years ago. Thankfully I am still the Heir, but I can't communicate with them."

"Wait, you almost let the temple be discovered? What? How did I not hear about this?"

"No you idiot. I have two charges. The first is to not die, the second is to protect the temple. Why do you think you were summoned to the alleyverse 17 years ago? The council got scared that I could actually die, so they stuck someone in as a backup. To take over if I ever failed. Regardless, I need you to talk to the council and tell them whats happening. Can you do that?"

Mack knew it wasn't a request. He had to obey anything that Mac said. As the backup Heir, he didn't have any authority unless made the Heir, and he had to obey the current Heir, as did the rest of their organization.

"I will do that."

"Thank you." Mac stepped backward and warped away to go do something else.

Mac donned his black robes and his Mk. 9 suit. It was going to be a long ride.

Near the Mountain of the Gods.

Quote

The MotG is where we as reside, as sharders.

Mack saw the Mountain extend into the sky. Nobody knew why it was there, or what it did. Mack had his suspicions. It was clearly the place where the Chairman resided, and maybe where voidus came from, but when Mack was on the Council he was never brought there. In fact, he never left McVerse until he had been stationed in Arelon all those years ago. Anyway, he was told to never visit the mountain. Doing so risked death and destruction if one of the Chairman's enemies got a hold of Mack, and as the Heir to the Heir, he shouldn't risk that.

Mack spotted the temple on top of the mountain, and he lowered himself down to land in front of it, and walked in the front.

This temple was like a hollow pyramid. About 100 by 100 feet. On the top, there was a hole in the ceiling, right beneath it, a mirror with jagged edged. In a radial pattern, 16 shards of glass were scattered throughout the room. Mack collected the pieces of glass from their jars as fit them together. He had never done this himself, but he knew the pattern. Each Mac did.

Once the final piece was put into place, the mirror began to glow with a pure white light. Mac stepped into the light and his body was dissolved and his spirit was moved back home. He felt the presence of the other Mac's gathered around him in a council, and felt me, the Chairman, their creator, speak.

"The council recognizes Mack, originally of the council, then a plant on Sel, and now second in line for the alleyverse. Why do you approach the council? You have not been asked to come, and Mac, originally of the council, and heir to the alleyverse, has not failed in his duties."

"I come on Mac's behalf. He mentioned that he was not allowed to approach you, so he sent me to inform you that people are beginning to find out about this side of the world. They will eventually find this temple and the entrance to our realm."

Another Mc spoke. "Let them come, the Chairman can kill them." He was quickly hushed by the other Mc's. One of which stood up, and spoke to the one who spoke out. "Do you know why we tell every Mc we send to stay hidden? And to never reveal our presence? If Voidus ever finds out about this, and our plans, or even if another writer finds out, we are destroyed. They can keep the Chairman from writing us into the stories of life. Then what will we do? We are powerful in our own realm, but what good is that when we can't leave it?"

They died down as I began to speak.

"While its true that I am stronger then any of the characters, and in my own realm I am probably supreme, I am not allowed to god mod and control their actions. That can get me removed from the mountain. You did well Mack in telling us this. I would like you to remove two of the shards of the mirror, and give one to yourself, and the other to Mac. Nobody will be able to access the room until you are both present. If not all of the 16 shards of glass are within 10 feet of the building, then it will sink into the ground, and can't be raised by anyone except me until they are all present again. You are dismissed Mack."

Mack returned to his body on top of the mirror. While he had been in the McVerse, something had removed the shards and placed them in their Jars again. He grabbed 2 and walked outside to his suit and began the flight back home.

I sat musing to myself. Did I just have a debate with a group of fictional characters that I created? I guess it wasn't a debate, but I still wrote a scene where I was on a council of people with the same name as me. I think that's one step worse than going insane. At the very least the 4th wall has been completely destroyed.

Oh well.

Technically this is around two weeks after the harbor, so if you want a reason for how they got here, come up with an excuse of how they got on the boat if they aren't TUBA. No more than three stowaways please. This way it makes more sense as to why people are suddenly showing up.

Also, Archer, should our characters go directly to the islands, or try to get on your Tai-na?

Go for the islands. To maximize the amount of world building I can do, I plan on skipping forward in time a bit (a few hours at a time), depending on other people's posts.

A dark-skinned woman sat on a large boulder, enthusiastically drilling out 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' on her guitar. Her left hand fingers flew across the fret board, her right hand flying up and down the strings at speeds only a master could match, and her purposefully slightly-off-key voice singing the lyrics.

"With the lights off, it's contagious, here we are now, entertain us! Something something dudududu Idon'tknowanyoftheotherwords. Bumbumbum dadada doodoo-oodloodloo," she sang at obnoxious volumes.

The large lion resting behind her continued its bored snoring.

"You are the worst," Tezandranon said to it, turning her head to glare at its serene face. "Almost as bad as Wereci. Practically impossible to annoy. Practically..." she tilted her head thoughtfully, "but, thankfully, I can be quite impractical at these times." She gently put down her guitar and grabbed an electric one. Standing up, she walked over to the huge sound-amplifiers that ringed her small plateau of rock in a half-circle and picked a cord up from the ground, plugging it into the base of the electric guitar and trying an experimental chord.

The sound was loud enough Andy concluded as her ears rang obnoxiously. She decided she needed something truly spectacular to wake up the lion.

"I've paid my dues, time after time / I've done my sentence, I've committed no crime / and bad mistakes, I've made a few / I've had my share of sand kicked in my face, but I've come through!" Andy played the interlude for a moment, then continued, "WEEEEEEEEEEE ARE THE CHAMPIONS, MY FRIENDS / AND WE'LL KEEP ON FIGHTING 'TILL THE END--"

The lion suddenly surged to its feet and leaped away, traversing the dense jungle of the island clumsily, for it was a desert beast. Andy pulled the cord from her electric guitar and yelled after it, "I got you, sucker! Take that!" She settled down onto her backside, picking up her normal guitar and starting to play 'All-star.' She paused as she saw something out in the sea and grabbed a walkie-talkie from her pocket. "Yo, Wer, could ya get me one of those Winged shortly? That's great. Okay. Bye." She cursed herself for being awkward and began to go over the words she'd said, trying to figure out if she could have said anything better.

She did not have time for much introspection. An eight-foot man with enormous blue-and-white-feathered wings trotted out of the jungle in the same direction she'd scared the brightlion into running. He crossed his arms over his bare, muscular chest and gave her a sardonic look. "Do you find it necessary to scare every man or animal away from you at top speeds? You realize your antics are what scared Tellen away, right?"

"Yeah, whatever," Andy mumbled, "just get me a lift to that." She gestured in the direction of the moving thing she'd seen and the Winged nodded.

"It's a Greatshell, I think. One of those big things from Roshar," the man said, his yellow, hawk-like eyes seeing what Andy could not. He picked her up like a princess from one of those fairy tales as she walked a few steps closer to him. He mumbled, "The things I do for a couple of jots," as he beat his massive wings and began running, jumping with his powerful legs as he met the end of the plateau. He faltered slightly, still a little unused to carrying people, and then straightened, powering up into the air on a convenient updraft. As the wind carried them up, the Winged's bad attitude slowly melted from his face, and he grinned with exhilaration. Andy herself had always loved heights, even if the way she now gained them was terrifying. She clutched at the man's arms as he confidently slammed his powerful wings against gravity, winning the sky as his people had for millennia.

He suddenly flung Andy forward and up, and the amount of sheer terror she felt then was enough to make up for the years she'd spent in a palace, a pampered princess. She could tell that he'd folded his wings and was free-falling from the lack of noise behind, and she began to fall as well. She dropped, utterly out of sorts, until suddenly she was being carried again. She realized that she was only a foot or so from the deep blue waters of the sea just then, and reached out, skimming the water with her fingertips. It stung a lot, but was so worth it. The Winged began the to fly upward again, probably uncomfortable with being so close to the water. He gained height quickly, then found a nice cruising point and stopped beating his wings, flying over the sea for a few extended moments before they got close enough to the Greatshell that he began to fall again. As a surge of oh-great-Rieshi-I-am-going-to-die spread through her, Andy saw that there were a whole bunch of people on the back of the Greatshell, most looking the tourist-type.

As they landed, the Winged folding his wings behind his back neatly and ruffling up his dark hair, then setting Andy down, she said to the people who were apparently touring the land, "He-heya, any of you need a little serenading? 'Cause I have seriously run out of people to sing to." She adopted a stern posture and regally lifted her chin.

Huh. Not exactly what I had in mind when I thought of this. But it'll do. Probably shouldn't be too many intelligent creatures on that island, though. Things start to get strange when that happens.

Nogard saw the dark skinned lady land, along with her flying escort. He turned his head, addressing the island. "Do you know anything about that?"

Rick jumped off of the small floating island he was riding on, landed on a tree and stood up. He grabbed a snake, shook it, and snapped it like a whip. A piece of molding fell out. Rick grabbed it, pulled out a hammer, and nailed it with several nails. The molding grew into a doorway, then the door opened, admitting a group of people. Rick smiled, his group was here, and they would terrorize the tourists.

Here's more information on the islands.

Spoiler

Solid islands

Not all of the islands float; a few are grounded into the sea floor. Whether or not these islands are sapient is a question that, as of yet, remains unanswered. The island with the North pole is one of these.

Flying rocks

Around the North pole is a specific variety of flying island. These islands are small, rocky, and have little to no life on them and are not sapient. They do not use the same spren to float as the sapient islands, instead using mandras (colloquially known as “luckspren”). The islands rarely leave the North pole, for reasons unknown.

Shadow birds

These shadow-black birds are, perhaps, the only predators of the islands. They gather in large flights, and feed on the spren of the islands*. The flights have a hive mind, centered on a single “queen” bird. It is suspected that they are Aviar mutated by the Alleystorm, but this remains unconfirmed.

*They also feed on the spren of alleycanes, suggesting that they are, in fact, one and the same.

Spoiler

Islands and intelligence

Each of the islands derives sapience from the connection of the creatures that reside on it. When other sapient species are included in this, things can get… strange. The effects of this have not yet been fully explored, but an increase in the number of expeditions may soon give us more information on this subject. Many islands are reluctant to accept humans due to the fact that species with higher sapience are harder to influence/control. As of yet, only one island has been discovered that harbors humans, although information gleaned from the inhabitants suggest that there are several that merely have yet to be found.

Island names

Islands names are a collection of smaller namelets (usually three), each of which is a separate syllable. Parents of an island will pass one or more of their names to their offspring. Names can also be taken from close friends, or, in rare occasions, created. During the lifetime of an island, names can be added or dropped, but usually only once or twice in a lifetime.

Islands and Alleycanes

As stated earlier, it is commonly believed that the spren that allows the islands to fly is the same spren that powers the alleycanes. This, perhaps, is the reason for the interesting dynamic between the two of them. Islands require the alleycanes for Investiture, and alleycanes are required to power them as part of their purpose. Despite this (or perhaps, because of it) the islands and the alleycanes have never been able to get along very well, although a truce has been kept, if uneasily, since the very first island was awakened. However, few named alleycanes will venture North of the mountains, and few islands South of them.

After two weeks sea...

Damaya handed the captain a spanreed and kept the other one for herself. She didn't plan to get stuck somewhere on these islands without a way back.

Some sailors rowed them ( @Cyanic   @Gancho Libre) over and then she stood at the beach. It smelled like the ocean, and the sun was shining.

Damaya smiled when she knelt down and touched the blue water with her hand. The ocean, it was endless, eternal and it was beautiful. She looked around and saw a strange woman. She hesitated for a moment and then walked over.

"Hi. I'm Damaya. Do you know where we are?" @AxeliustheGrizzled

"Hey sister," Andy said enthusiastically. "We're on the opposite side of the planet from your continent, I believe, though that's probably just me." She winked at Damaya and asked, "Wanna see the stuff from my planet? I just got here because a Wereci's godling friend can teleport. Sort of. Anyway, I can call in a ride." She snorted at the Winged's unamused expression. He didn't like other Winged, apparently. "Oh, and yeah, I'm Tezandranon. Call me Andy or Tez, though."

The Winged's blue-tipped feathered wings fluttered slightly, perhaps regretting that he'd gotten this job. He crossed his arms across his chest and blew out a breath of air to stir a tuft of hair in his face.

Technically, the islands are not on the opposite side of the world from the rest of the alleyverse. The islands are at the north pole, and the worldspike is at the equator. In addition, people are at the edge of the islands right now, which is going to be much closer.

we're over here now btw

Sorana forgot to @ you, I think

Araha stood up when the small row boat neared the pier. She jumped off the skiff and landed onto the pier itself without any trouble. It would've been exciting to explore, see what sorts of things this side of the world held, but she couldn't be completely excited because of Damaya.

It's been two weeks since the house and she still seemed distant, unable to be enthusiastic, or things like that. Araha thought that if Damaya was freed from her past she'd slowly get better, more excited about life in general and such, but she supposed it was more complicated than that. Sometimes Araha had very brief, very small intrusive thoughts, selfish thoughts: What if she'd never met Damaya? She'd probably be just as happy as she was before coming to the Waystop. Now Damaya's disenthusiasm, even after dealing with the bad people in her lives, just somewhat left Araha tired. She probably didn't even actually laugh or smile sincerely during their two weeks of travel.

Araha hated these thoughts because she knew she loved her friend, she was happy that they managed to deal with her past, and she understood that it could take time to recover.

The thoughts were easily pushed down into the depths anyway.

To be fair, there were some times when Damaya smiled sincerely, mostly it was when she was looking out to the sea, maybe remembering fond memories. Araha probably approached her once or twice during those times and they talked about some happier memories. Probably.

Besides talking with Damaya during their two weeks on the sea though, she also tinkered with a few of the fabrials and the like that she had on her and that she could find. She remembered that Deras still had the paired reed-bracer for her reed-glove, but she didn't really write him, maybe it was nervousness, or maybe she just kept procrastinating until she really couldn't do it anymore, or maybe it was just that she didn't want to be distracted or something.

She'd also practiced her chameleon ring during that time and she became immensely better, being able to completely turn herself invisible relative to its surroundings. As long as there weren't any sudden shifts in light or the background itself, she would be completely unseen. Other than that, she'd also mastered a few commands from the gift that Master Soren left her. Mostly simple ones though, like 'hold things' and 'protect me,' but she did get the command to strengthen her trousers which act as legs, which costed quite a lot of breaths. She never ran out of colour though because of the chameleon ring. She wondered if there were other ways to bend the rules of Investiture too. The thought excited her.

She probably talked to Pry @Silva somewhere during the two week journey too, probably important things, or unimportant things. It didn't really happen yet, but it could be rectified later. She noticed a lot more inconsistencies during those two weeks, like whatever she did during them was malleable almost, like whatever she did could change along with her memories of what she did. That was interesting, and she would research exactly what the sparks these inconsistencies were.

For now though, it was time to enjoy the scenery and explore whatever could be explored. She stretched herself, cracking her knuckles, neck, fingers, basically anything she could crack to relieve tension and pulled her hood up to shield her head and neck from the sun beating down on them.

...she had no idea how to really explore, so she just resolved to stay by Damaya's side, "what ya doin'?" Araha asked with a small smile as she walked over to her friend. @Sorana

Pry stayed nearby, content just to watch the scenery. Firm land felt good beneath her feet and every slight breeze made her smile. She didn't focus on what was being said near her, but rather on the nature. The difference in climate astounded her and she wanted to enjoy every minute of it.

Tezandranon smiled, a much wider smile than Damaya's own, and said, "Well, we have stuff like sea-mirins or changelings, though those are technically non-canon. Also brightlions, nightlions, direwolves, godlings, dercons, Skywhales, Fleshflies," Andy paused at that, shivering, "though you do not want to encounter any of that last. Also, I hear a trio of Skywhales and a squad of Zosans are active in some war of your's. Wereci was so pissed when he found out." She got a mischievous look on her face, then added, "We also have a couple more of these," she gestured at the Winged, "waiting around so I can take you to our resident island."

Andy turned to look at the Winged, then remembered his name suddenly. "Klin, right?"

He rolled his eyes and nodded. Andy turned back to Damaya and asked, "So, you in?"
