Grey Skin and non-Rosharan Shardblades

5 posts in this topic

We've seen in OB the results of killing strokes from type IV Biocrhomatic entities Nightblood and whatever Vivienda's sword is named. Instead of shriveled up limbs the limbs cut by these entities lose all color. We know regular Shardblades sever spiritual connection. What exactly are these Shardblades severing to cause the effect. We know that they are not excising Breath; that's an Endowment thing. Could they be severing the connection to whatever Shard their victims are associated with, thus the loss of all color? Are they severing whatever latent Endowment resides in that victim from their spiritweb? And a tangential question. Could a Shardblade be fashioned from other Cosmere magic systems other than the two we've seen and if so what in the world would a wound taken from such a weapon look like? Would a Scadrian Shardblade turn one into mist or snatch attributes? Would a blade from Taldain draw all moisture from it's target? Would a blade from Threnody turn its weilder or it's victim into a shade?

There's a WOB that seons could turn into Blades if they had something to anchor them more firmly into the Physical Realm, so theoretically anything like that could be made into a Shardblade-like weapon. To the rest of the questions, I have no answer.

I can't find WOB, but Breath is a piece of the spark of life that Endowment makes transferable.  Every living thing has the spark, and the piece that Endowment makes into Breath can be removed whether the life is of Endowment or not. It can't be transferred to another without Endowment's intervention, but it can be removed and destroyed.

So Shardblades in general are devices that in addition to killing people, actually sever a spiritual connection in accordance with the Shard it's made from. Rosharan Shardblades sever bonds, Nalthian Shardblades sever the spark of life and should therefore not work on inanimate objects like boulders except as a regular sword. What would a seon-based Shardblade sever?  Love? And what the hell would that look like?

Eh, I think a Shardblade is a Shardblade. You make something that is that invested and cuts, and it's going to cut inanimate stuff pretty much the same across the board. It's how it interacts with living things that's going to get weird.

When a Shardblade cuts a a limb core, that limb goes gray. It becomes "lifeless" in a literal sense. Azure's blade is Awakened, and it instead of burning eyes, makes the whole body go gray, like a lifeless from that magic system. Awakening feeds on color, so I think the it's a similar effect for a different reason.

As to what other systems versions of Shardblades would do... No clue. But I don't think it's going to be easy to predict, mechanically or visually.
