My Signing Questions

123 posts in this topic

Just a question that bothers me very much, if someone could ask it, that would be great (for my personal curiosty, but probably for the community's as well):

[feel free to rephrase]

What's the deal with the different kinds of shardblades? He said that we have seen three in WoK. How many kinds are there? And, since he said that Nightblood was a shardblade as well, did we see dead sprene - live spren - honorblade, OR does he count dead/live spren as the same kind and we've seen nightblood or another Animated sword (Hoid, I'm looking at you) in WoK somewhere (though not in action) OR is there yet another kind that we simply weren't able to recognize for lack of information on it?

My top question would definitely be along the lines of "So it appears Stormlight can be substituted for Breaths, so can we quantify Stormlight with Breaths? How much Stormlight would equal 1 Breath?"

I don't believe Nightblood is a Shardblade, that is just how you would describe it to someone like Szeth in world. In which case there would be a third type of blade. Shardblade (Spren), Honourblade and something else.

That said, one of my friends thinks that the Heralds from Roshar are the five Scholars from Warbreaker - and that Nightblood may actually be an Awakened 'dead' Shardblade rather than just an Awakened sword. It's a little complicated.

On an unrelated note.

I'd love to know how many Heralds have Worldhopped into or out of the Greater Roshar system since they left Taln alone.

erm didn't do a research about these questions some maybe got answered already.

Please if someone can ask(I'll never be able to, unfortunately):

1) Can shardblade spren theoratically be revived?

2) You told us Pershandi and Pershmen were different but do they share the same physiology?

3) What is the range of the everstorm to actually turn them to "voidbringer"?

4) For how long Wit has been staying in Roshar?

If I'll think of something I'll edit.

I'd love to see someone ask more about Radiant Squires.

- are they the first step of becoming a KR and bonding a spren?

- or are Squires bonded to the KR the same way a KR is bound to a Spren?

- Do they get any surges, or is it just the bonus of speed / strength / healing from Investiture?

Also, a question based on this WoB:

Q: If Nightblood were on Roshar would he be a Shardblade?

A: Yes, they are exactly the same thing. He is a Shardblade that is twisted and is a lot more powerful than normal.

Brandon said that things from other worlds work differently when not on their native planet. Would nightblood turn into a Spren-blade and be able to grant surgebinding powers since WoB says that Nightblood is a shardblade?

Actually, could someone ask if Skybreakers could fly (or fall) like the Windrunners? Could be a RAFO bait with the next book being called Skybreaker and all but from what we know it would just feel wrong for someone besides Kaladin to fly. (Also Brandon said that if he were a KR he would be a Windrunner because he wants to fly. He didn´t mention SBs for flying though.) It could also increase or knowledge on wheter or not Surges matarialize the same way for different orders.

Were the highstorms around on Roshar before Honor and Cultivation came? (This seems like a likely RAFO target...)

First, I don't think the highstorms are as ancient as you believe they are.

A recent WoB sheds light on this:

Q: Do highstorms get weaker as they move west because of normal meteorological reasons the same way a hurricane gets weaker over land or is it because they slowly drain investiture as they infuse spheres over the whole continent?

A: Both.  He said that anything like that will be affected by both normal science as well as the magic, but then he added that the highstorms are a natural occurring phenomenon that were on the planet before stuff started going down. I didn't get this confirmed, but I think he meant the stormlight part of the storm was added later, I'm assuming by a Shard.

(As far as I know, this is new information.  I had no idea that the highstorms existed beforehand and just assumed they were created by Honor.)

1) Can shardblade spren theoratically be revived?

This has been asked, and it is a theoretical yes.

Brandon has said that Nightblood is a Shardblade (similar to an Honorblade). So that would actually explain the three types of Shardblades we saw in TWOK, since Wit's sword would count. Clever of Brandon if that's true.

Well, technically a shardblade is a blade that works off of investiture and has gained sentience, so if you don't HAVE to include spren in the definition of shardlade then NB fits.

As for the 3 of 16 quote. I have an Idea I believe to be pretty solid.

There were 3 of 16 here. Honor, Cultivation, Odium. Then some stuff went down. Honor got shattered, Odium ran off to Braize and Cultivation withdrew from the planet and mankind, with the exception of her Nightwatcher spren doing some stuff, but only if people seek it out, and even then it seems to be theoretically end-neutral investment. One boon, one curse. Probably how much the Nightwatcher likes you determines the severity of both.

Therefore with Cultivation and Odium (for all intents and purposes) no longer working on the planet, it is left to the broken one Honor (or his collection of splinters, plus the big one, stormfather) to reign over the entirety of the planet.

The stormfather even seems bound to start/release the  Odious Everstorm if the Parshendi ask.

The Desolations and the Recreance are the biggest thing that I theorize on in my head. We know so little of these events, and we know they're going to play a large part in the future.

We know from WoB that the Desolations come when the Heralds brake on Braize (the Braize part is not confirmed, just the Herald part). But the Parshpeoples exist on the planet between desolations (or do they...) so what is it about the torture, Honor dying, the Oath pact, and the KR that triggers the Parshpeople just as the Heralds return? And how do all these pieces fit together?

So Wit's sword is Awakened? I thought this was still all theory (though i did believe it). Did I miss some WoB? Or is this your assumption?

Pure assumption, but there is a WoB of Brandon getting excited when asked.

We learned in WoR that there's only one type of Radiantblade (live or dead, it's the same), there's Honorblades... What's the third? Well, we know Awakened swords are Shardblades, and Wit has a sword which is likely magical.

I think the theory very likely.

Well, then we have the whole Dawnshard thing, but we have no idea if they're actually weapons in the sense that a radiantblade is a weapon. If awakened blades are under the whole radiantblade category, then Dawnshards might actually be blades of some sort.

Ah, thanks for clarification.

Now, please help me out once more: Where in WoR did we learn that they're the same, specifically that Brandon thinks about them as being the same? Afaik he could have very well be referring to those as two seperate kinds of Shardblade. Also, I cannot remember any WoB that there ARE only three types of SB. He just said, we had seen three types in WoK.

Edit: Also, I am aware that this discussion borders on threadjacking and I apologize. I do hope, however, that it might lead to my question being asked ;)

Meh, I thread jack quite/derail often myself, usually without meaning to, so I'm not going to yell at someone else for doing the same to mine lol.

He just said, we had seen three types in WoK.

When we learn they're dead spren, and they are "revived" each time they are used (making them sorta-livesprenblades). Deadsprenblades are not different than Livesprenblades in function. They cut things very well. Honorblades do count as a different type because they grant Surgebinding and are not made of spren. Finally, Awakened swords would be a different type because they apparently function with amazing power and destroy the entirety of things they touch while consuming Investiture (something sprenblades do not do).

I have never said that there were only three types of Shardblade, I'm just saying that I think a reasonable interpretation of the WoB is that we saw two types blatantly in WoK (sprenblade/Honorblade) and one type subtly (Awakened sword of Wit's). I am not convinced that dead/live spren make for different Blades, because as far as we've seen they function the exact same, though deadspren need a little bit of prodding to work. For the moment, it's a theory.

I can sort of see why people might think dead and live sprenblades are different, but they really aren't to me. They both function on the same principles (they are bonded to people) and act the same (cut really well). Nothing is stopping dead spren from changing to a non-sword form save for some Cognitive difficulties. The bond is not different between dead spren and regular people except insofar as it's much much weaker, as the bond is coerced through gemstone rather than gotten naturally from the spren choosing the bondee.

I'm with you, Moogle, for the most part. My problem is: I'm not convinced that Brandon saw it that way when he made his "three types" statement. Therefore, I think it's a good question to ask.

As for the three types in WoK vs. three types in total thing, I meant that more as a general statement. I am perfectly aware that you didn't say there were only three in total and did not in any way intend to offend!

It's probably a silly thing to ask, given how close we've come on assumptions, but perhaps it would be worth asking if, say, Willshapers have / had access to the surge of Transportation ... or if Truthwatchers have / had access to the surge of Illumination or Progression ... or if Bondsmiths have / had access to the surge of Adhesion. Almost any of these would confirm, without a shred of doubt, where they fit on the great collection of orders / surges. I know we think we're clear on all of those, but it would be great to have WoB confirmation.

(Unless we've gotten it already, and I've missed it. In which case, woo!)

We have all the orders confirmed.

5) Truthwatchers

8) Willshapers

10) Bondsmiths

Hey Banestar, you missed it.  The locations were confirmed at the Seattle signing.  Truthwatchers are on bottom in the number 5 spot, Willshapers at 8 and Bondsmiths at 10.   There is a thread here somewhere with an updated chart.
