Reminder: No Multiple Accounts

9 posts in this topic

There have been multiple instances of individuals having more than one account in the past month or two. Much of this is involved with Social Groups. I cannot surmise why someone would do this, but it often involves upvote manipulation and trying to manipulate people in multiple social groups, hence me posting this reminder in this forum. Perhaps some find having multiple accounts or joke accounts funny, but this is very serious.

Multiple accounts are not allowed. Do not do this. They have never been allowed, and apparently the line in the Rules post that has always been there is unclear, and the additional reminder I posted in 2014 is just as valid as ever. Read this now: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/6977-notice-on-multiple-accounts/

This deception is not "fun" and is not funny, and will be swiftly dealt with. Ignorance will not be a sufficient excuse. I have instantly banned people before for multiple accounts, and frankly, due to the three instances of this very recently where we've been generous to not ban people instantly, but we will not continue to be generous in this way.

I am lenient on multiple accounts due to if you have login issues (due to Microsoft servers refusing our emails for validation), but that's about it. There are no realistic reasons why users require multiple accounts.

Let me know if you have questions. If you had made joke accounts, tell me now and we will deal with them, but these multiple accounts issues will not continue.

Suggestion: Maybe this should be pinned? Some scrolling down shows that a thread stays on page 1 about 3 weeks if there are no posts made in it, and this one is unlikely to get many, meaning that even though everyone currently is aware, people who join even in as little of a month from now may not realize it (even though they should, of course, be aware from the site's rules, but then that was true before this post as well).

Edit: That was fast.

this post just reminded me, I used to have an account called OreSeur on here (this was before I made nohadon) and I faced some login issues, so I made this account, my old account didn't really do much and I don't think I have access to it (I don't even try to log on to it) so if that account is still lying around, uh... don't ban me, I guess

Plenty of ways. For this notice in particular, which is related to the social groups, people will most likely realize that two different names are the same person while interacting with them.

It's not very difficult to determine if two accounts are shared by the same user. Obviously, I don't want to give out details, but most times it is quite painfully obvious.

I believe that you need a warrant to track IP address. Also someone could share a computer with their family and they might have two accounts on the same computer owned by two different people. Also, you can access from your phone.

Just so you know: search warrants are about what the government can do. (Just like with, say, free speech, that's purely a concept about what the government can prohibit. A private entity has no such restrictions.)

I'm not going to comment on this any further for obvious reasons. I would like to not give nefarious actors--which have existed on this forum before--any ideas. They probably already know, but we do not need to help them.

I'm well aware on how all this works, and have been administering forums for a long time. I know all these permutations on what can happen.
