Canton of Combat

The Alleyzon employee smiled reassuringly. He opened the box, then handed it to him. Inside lay armored boots, gloves, and a wrapping around the waist, all armor. Inside also lay a crown, with gems in it. All of it was blood red, and everything but the crown had pulsing veins of Voidlight. The crown had five gems, a large on in the middle, with Voidlight. The other four are smaller, and have Stormlight infused in them. "This is from the will of Atticus Voidlight."

"Thank you. Have a good day" Silphio gingerly lifted it and handed it to a guard on duty. Nelran took the armour and walked gracefully to the armoury, placing it in the 'In case of emergency' rack.

Silphio looked around at the canton members currently doing jobs around the entrance. they trusted him to be a leader. How? He was a warrior, Devaan was better at tactics then him, Master Sheonar always was a trickier fighter, Silphio preferred straightforward methods, he needed advisors, he retired to his study sending individual letters to people, names came to him as he wrote.

@I think I am here.

Spoiler

Max.

I always thought of you as a little brother. You've grown since then, but I need your help.

Master Sheonar is dead.

I have been placed in charge of the canton. But I can't do it on my own, I'm no Lord Prelan. I need your help, you know where the canton is, if you will join me, please, I need to talk to you in person.

- Silphio Shamus, Lord Prelan of the Canton of Combat

Spoiler

Astiel.

I haven't known you for long, but I could tell you believed in the Canton. You care about each individual life, as much as you pretend not to. Devaan is dead. He died fighting Hellbent, they killed each other. I'm now canton leader and I need help, advice, and a friend to fall back on, you're similar to your father in more ways then one, but above all you're a damnation good fighter.

and a better person.

- Silphio Shamus, Lord Prelan of the Canton of Combat

Silphio sent the letters, each would arrive to the recipient no matter where they were, the letters would be delivered by canton scouts, after all.

Do note that Hellbent's armor is about as good as there is for defense, probably the best the Canton has. It's stronger than diamond, flexible, and naturally regenerates if something manages to break it, and is as resistant as Shardplate to Shardblades.

Silphio has natural armour plating that he can grow from under his skin, so he doesn't need it right now, but Astiel might take it or a canton guard.

It took about 15 minutes of constant running to get to the Canton. Max didn’t have his armour anymore, and every 5 or so minutes he’d stumble and fall to the pavement, before bringing himself up and running.

The suit was annoying. It stifled his movements. By the time Max reached the familiar Canton gate, it was ripped in a couple places and was a mess. His feelings still surged. Master Sheonar had raised him. Him and Mara. And now, Master Sheonar was also dead.

“Silph!” he called, now inside the Canton. He’d said he needed to talk with Max in person. It began to rain lightly.

Silphio was waiting in the reception area, he led Max up to Devaan's quarters, Astiel was already waiting there. A shocked expression on his face.

"He's dead" Astiel kept muttering to himself

"Someone actually managed to off the old bugger"

Silphio shot him a look before turning to Max, the canton leader robes looked ill-fitting on him. He turned a tired face towards Max.

"I have been elected canton leader."

Astiel's head shot up

"What?"

"I'm not Devaan, I can't do this on my own. I need help. Advice."

Silphio brought out two cases and opened them. Inside lay canton robes similar to his.

"Will you join me?"

Max listened as Silph spoke, feeling increasingly dejected. Silph didn’t deserve this, to have so much responsibility suddenly thrust upon him.

Max moved to sit down but stopped himself. It felt wrong, so wrong. It made him sick just to be in this room. It reminded him of Master Sheonar. The happy memories of him only pained Max more.

Silph didn’t deserve this. No one did. Looking up from the ground, Max observed the cases, the robes. He had to help. He had to.

He looked down again. But what about the wedding? What about Althea? This was their day. But... later. It could be done later, right?

No! He thought, forcing his head up. Not later. You’ve always pushed it to later. It was supposed to be now. Now, with Althea.

But he couldn’t just leave Silph, right? He couldn’t leave him to the bureaucracy, to the training. He couldn’t.

“Silph,” he said, looking up. “I...”

He struggled to form the words so he just gestures to his clothing, a tattered tuxedo. “It’s my wedding day,” he said.

“And I, I promise, I will help you. I promise I will wear the robes. But I can’t today, Silph, I’m so sorry,” he looked back down.

Silphio froze.

"Oh my god Max... I never knew"

Astiel looked at Max

"Guess my dad's death put a damper on the mood, huh" He said in a hollow voice.

Silphio shut the case and handed it to Max.

"Go, get married, Devaan would be proud of you." Silphio put a hand on Max's shoulder and ushered him out the door. He then turned to Astiel, who was already putting on his robes.

"It'll need some trimming, maybe I'll make it into a cloak" He told Silphio

"So you accept?"

"Yeah, what do you need me to do?"

"I'll be in charge of recruitment and training in the canton's grounds. You're in charge of Intelligence and expanding Devaan's portfolio for now."

"Got it. What will Max be in charge of?"

"Operations, mainly. This is going to be a hell of a job for the three of us. Did you know we have security details all around the city? We have some guarding the storming bank of chrysts for taln's sake Financing will be a nightmare, we made money through hiring out security and doing the occasional mercenary op, but without Devaan we've lost a lot of reputation. People are dropping our contracts left and right."

"Well, we'll have to fix this best we can, won't we?" Astiel walked out of the door and down to the intelligence quarter getting a bearing. Silphio sat at Devaan's desk. No. His desk. he hated this room. he remembered when he interned here, forced my Master Sheonar when he was 19, stationed as a guard. He searched through a stack of papers, he never realised how much work being a guild leader actually involved. He took out the first page he was looking for, guard rosters and training, he started reading through it absentmindedly.

Max nodded absently as Silphio led him out. The last thing he saw as he exited was Astiel trying on the Canton robes. Together. All three of them would run the Canton together. As he closed the door, Max considered all that had happened, and slumped against the wall. He wanted to give up, to just... but no. He couldn't.

Running to his quarters in the Canton and placing the case on his bed for later, Max ran out of the building in the rain, and tried running back to the wedding hall. He slipped a couple times on the way, the cobblestones were really slippery during rain and his balance issues weren't doing him any favours.

All the time he was running, the same thoughts repeated in his head. The same thoughts, that he couldn't stop thinking, that he couldn't stop from plaguing him. He tried running away from those, too, but they always seemed to catch up. It was like he was in a ocean of feelings, of sadness. He had to make it to the lighthouse, the safe haven.

He turned a corner and saw the wedding building. There it was.

THE FOLLOWING IS OUT OF CHARACTER:

Coming Era 3, the canton is going under a small reform.

There are now three sectors that can be applied for, as well as Miscellaneous positions. Here they are:

OPERATIONS:

The canton now has more public operations. You can hire us out for jobs. Character members of Canton operations will report to Max, head of operations.

Being a member of operations gives you access to the canton armoury and garage, as well a private bunk and vault. Covert operations can be run, and people will be selected for them by assessing previous results.

Operators are organised into squads, there a four squads with eight people in each. if there aren't enough people to fill a squad, NPC's will be used. Each squad is organised into different roles.

Mercenary Operation Cost: 500-2000 Chrysts dependent on the job

The SQUAD LEADER is responsible for planning an operation and seeing it through, they also have a say in recruitment and which roles they need.

PATROL:

Patrol units are guards, They are mainly contracted to protect monuments and government buildings, but can be hired out for other establishments, such as trade shipments, banks, etc.

Patrol units consist of anywhere from 10-20 PCs and NPCs.

Being a Patrol member gives access to the bunks, the armoury and specialised canton training. In addition to food, protection and a decent wage. Patrol Characters report to Silphio

Unit Hire Costs: 750C a unit

INTELLIGENCE:

Intelligence is fairly straightforward. Build a network of informants and information dealers, identify potential canton threats and keep people informed about the ongoings of the government. Being a member of the Intelligence sector gives you access to information, a bunk, access to the hub, canton protection and the ability to call in ops and communicate with Squad leaders. Members report to Astiel.

MISCELANEOUS:

Finance: Keeping track of not only canton Chrysts but also the bank of chrysts as a whole, pays well but requires work. Gives you access to ALL financial records, public or otherwise.

Forging: Creating Weapons, Armour, Transport and Magical technology. You are payed per object created.

Anyone interested in any of these canton positions, let me know in this thread.

DAYS LATER

The night when the Deathwing came to Silphio was appropriately dramatic. Pitch-black sky, a raging storm, and crackling lightning streaking through the air. Nature itself made a spectacle of the occasion.

It started with a single flash of light as a Space Marine stepped from a tear in reality onto the central grounds. Investiture and rain alike streamed off its ornate helm, shaped like a human skull, as it turned towards the massive steel tower.

Silphio was fast asleep when a watch guard roused him.

"Sir! A space marine just tore a hole through reality again." Kestraal told him.

Silphio got ready and then floated down to the central grounds.

"Hey there" Silphio said.

His Larkin and aviar clung to his shoulders. His whitespine soon joined him.

"What can I do for you?"

The Space Marine took a step toward Silphio, looming over him in the pouring rain.

"I'm looking for the one called Silphio," it said. The speakers in the helm distorted the sound, making it sound like an angry snarl. "From your entrance, can I assume that you are him?"

"That'd be me, which is it this time. Defacement or Honour?" Silphio grimaced, most late-night visitors came to see Devaan's resting place and he had just as many enemies as he had friends, he had to stop 6 people vandalising the place in the past two days

The Space Marine threw back the cowl of its tabard, exposing the full skull helm to the rain.

”Honour, I think,” it said, sounding thoughtful. “Devaan died a martyr’s death. No need to add to his pain now.”

The Space Marine suddenly started striding towards the steel tower, walking past Silphio. “Take me to the grave,” it said. “We’ll talk more there.”

Silphio led the marine through the main reception building, past the hub and into a long room which had one word posted above it's door.

Vallhalla.

The hall was filled with coffins, put neatly in rows, each dedicated to a canton member who died in active duty. Devaan would have wanted to be buried with the people he led, not kept apart, which is why at the very end of the hallway lay a coffin made of marble, with a full canton insignia on it. Engraved into the stone were these words.

Here lies Devaan Sheonar, leader and founder of the canton of combat. May adonalsium look after him.

The Space Marine slowly stepped over to the coffin. It slid a massive hand across the surface with surprising gentleness, lingering over the inscription for a moment.

“What do you know of the Black Crusade, Silphio?” it said, the distorted snarl abruptly breaking the silence.
