[OB] Two different types of Spren/Shardplate Theory

Two Spren types/SHARDPLATE theory

Ok so I have a theory that eacg Radiant order has two different types of Spren.

The first one is one of the ten higher types of Spren, which forms the Nahel-bond and once the Radiant swears the third Ideal of his/her order, can turn into a Shardblade.

The second type of Spren is one of the lesser Spren. My theory is that once the Radiant swears the fourth oath, these lesser Spren form into that person’s Shardplate.

Which explains why Sanderson has said that Shardplate isn’t as invested as Shardblade, it’s made up of weaker Spren then Shardblades.

This theory is backed up by the fact that when Kaladin was about to swear the fourth ideal of the Windrunners (I am aware he didn’t) hundreds of windspren where spinning around him. And when he said to Syl that he couldn’t swear the oath, he apologized to Syl and the WINDSPREN.

This theory is backed up further as throughout Oathbringer the closer he got to swearing it the more windspren appeared in Shadesmar around him.

So I think it might work something like this:

Windrunners: windspren

Bondsmiths: gloryspren

Elsecallers: logicspren

Willshapers: intoxicationspren (JK)

Lightweavers: creationspren

Edgedancers: lifespren

Skybreakers: ????

Truthwatchers: ????

Stonewards:  ????

Dustbringers: flamespren

With this in mind, think off the various statements about Spren throughout the series.

  • No Spren in Shinovar: this could mean that no Radiants lived here, so no lesser Spren needed to be there to form into Shardplate.
  • Logicspren only common in Urithiru: this could be where most Elsecallers lived, as I can totally see all the scholars hiding away in some hidden corridor somewhere.
  • Windspren super common in Alethkar: we know as a fact that most Windrunners came from and lived in that area.

If someone could confirm this at I signing for me, that would be great. (Ps. I want props for this theory).

It seems very likely.  Here's a great list :D  Sadly, we won't find out more for years :( There's lots of speculation on what will ultimately form Shardplate.  (sorry, not trying to be snippy, trying to be helpful <3)

I bet living shard plate is easier to put on and remove. I wonder how such spren would react to their high spren becoming a dead eye.

I agree with the theory especially when it comes to Windrunners and windspren... but the others I'm not sure about. For this reason.

Windspren are located in the physical realm Primarily, so much so that the crew of the ship in shadesmar was shocked to see one. That means that there investiture is mainly in the spirit realm. Great candidate for shardplate!

However the rest of these seem to come and go suggesting more cognitive location. Especially gloryspren which we saw in the cognitve realm! So to me that says we are missing something because especially with brandons magic systems there are clear patterns usually.

Now maybe because of adhesion Kaladin can bond his own shardplate easily and the others have to get help from a bondsmith to get their spren physical but that's a lot of conjecture.

Theses lesser spren find it easier to exist in the material world, but it takes unique circumstances to sustain themselves there.

Intoxicationspren due make sense. Maybe Axis the collector only saw one because there was a budding Willshaper that wasn’t caught by the Skybreakers

That is the most popular theory right now. I've jumped on and off that theory multiple times. Guess we'll just have to wait and see

Two problems with this,

  1. Not all orders get their blade at the third Ideal, Shallan, and Renarin and The Diagram Dustbringer all seem to have theirs before the third Ideal.
  2. Now correct me if I'm wrong but I think the orders get their plate at different times, Jasnah spoke about it almost as fifth Ideal so did the Skybreakers when they were teaching Szeth.

Shallan had sworn all of the oaths, or at least most of them, but then she regressed. That is why she got her blade before swearing the third ideal. Renarin and Malata could be at the third ideal, they could have sworn it off-screen. It does depend on the order though:

Is there a specific number of the ideals that they have to do before they can get the Shardblade?

Brandon Sanderson

It depends on the Order.
