Questioner

Do you have any idea which book of yours might make it to the movie theaters first?

Brandon Sanderson

Which one might make it to the movie theaters first? So right now it's going to be a race because I would say that a lot of things are kind of equal footing, because most of my options that we have for films lapsed last year and then we resold them. So we're kind of starting from scratch on everything. We sold Legion again, we sold Mistborn again, and we sold The Emperor's Soul shortly before. (Crowd ooh'd and aah'd at that one) And then we sold Steelheart like on Friday. Steelheart had been optioned and they let it lapse. Mistborn had been and Legion had been, so we've got four new companies basically working on it, but every time we do this my profile as a writer has raised to the point that we get a better crowd, if that makes sense. Like the Steelheart deal I'm really excited about. I love the producer, he's the guy that did...did you guys see Real Steel? Did you ever see that, the Richard Matheson story? The guy who did that. I loved that, I thought it was...it was one of those movies I watched expecting it to be done, and it was great. But he also did the Night at the Museum stuff, and things like that, and so I'm really excited about that. But the Mistborn script treatments are excellent, the best treatments I've gotten. What that means is that's what you write as a producer to give to a screenwriter to then write the screenplay, and then after that you get stars attached, and then after that someone finally gives you money and you make the film. So we're still a long way away, but the treatments are really good. And then, you know, the guys who have The Emperor's Soul are super enthusiastic. They're DMG, they made the Ironman films with Marvel, they're super enthusiastic and they went down the Cosmere rabbit hole. They bought it and then they're like, let me see this deleted scene about this guy named Hoid. So I gave it to them and they're like, "wait a minute", and they started reading everything. And so they've come back to me and they're like "sooo, um, the Sanderson cinematic universe...". So I don't know what's going to happen with that, but there's lots of discussion about things like that. And they've been talking to the Mistborn guys, and so... But this is all very new, meaning we're at the preliminary stages of all of it. There's like, nothing I can officially even announce other than "These people have bought these rights, these people have bought these rights". Maybe we'll get something made eventually. I've gotten really close before and it hasn't happened so, who knows.

Questioner [PENDING REVIEW]

What Aviar power does Mraize's green chicken grant?

Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW]

But it is an Aviar, so it does have one.

Questioner [PENDING REVIEW]

Has Vasher (or any of the alias he goes by) ever fathered a biological child? (before or after he returned)

Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW]

That's also a RAFO, sorry.

Question [PENDING REVIEW]

What color eyes do Siri and Vivenna have?

Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW]

So this, I'd have to go look in my notes, but it can vary...

Questioner [PENDING REVIEW]

In the book, there's the one time they talk about it being darkeyes, but I wasn't sure if it was makeup or *inaudible* or if it was makeup eyes.

Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW]

I'll have to look in my notes. But it can vary.

Here are the book pictures which I have also uploaded to Arcanum: (spoiled for size)

The last one and https://wob.coppermind.net/events/171/#e8177 are both from @JoyBlu, who got my copy of Warbreaker and her copy of Arcanum Unbounded signed.

https://wob.coppermind.net/events/171/#e8175 and https://wob.coppermind.net/events/171/#e8169 are both mine (@OrangeJedi)

On https://wob.coppermind.net/events/171/#e8175 I think that audio might have been cut short, I remember say something like; They have done worse and Brandon laughing, but the mic might not have picked that up.

Also the person who asked https://wob.coppermind.net/events/171/#e8169 was part of my group; I will asked him for what he said so we can get rid of those nasty *inaudible*

Obviously the footnotes on @JoyBlu's book one need to be updated; I think everything else is fine.

A big thanks to the Arcanum staff and for getting those WoB out; It was like an early Christmas. I really appreciate what you guys do and so am glad I can help.

Questioner 1

So the Sleepless kind of have me wondering about what sentience is in the cosmere. Like how would a Sleepless manifest on the Cognitive Realm--

Brandon Sanderson

That's a good question, you'll-- that I'll RAFO. But they are a single consciousness, but they would argue that all your cells are independent of you. So they are cells that can move around. They're really fun... they started in a non-cosmere book when I was 22. Obviously a bit inspired by Fire Upon the Deep, one of my favorite science fiction books. And I read that book and I'm like, "Group consciousnesses are cool!" what if you had a species that was made up of-- Not like one of these Ender's Game y'know, one, but each swarm was an individual and they could breed and evolve their own things to do different stuff. So each of these little bits, these hordelings is what I call them-- Imight change because we've got cremling now. But each of these little bits is bred for a specific purpose, "Feed the swarm" and stuff like that. So they've got all kinds of cool stuff going on.

Questioner 1

Are they Slivers?

Brandon Sanderson

...Oh Silvers. Not quite like Slivers but yeah. Slivers are a little more that whole Ender's Game thing, right? A little more-- And this is actually an individual that's not a hivemind. These are-- This is an individual, single consciouness, and the cells are-- they've got a step between cell and body. We kind of do too, like mitochondria are kind of "What are these? Are these things we ingested somehow and got working for us?" It's all very cool.

Questioner 2

So is it like Malazan Book of the Fallen [Devaris?]

Brandon Sanderson

Ehhh, there's little--

Questioner 2

Okay, a little?

Brandon Sanderson

Yeah.

Yeah.

Footnote: In MBOTF, D'ivers are shapeshifters that transform into multiple creatures, for example, a human that transforms into seven jackals.

There are a few bits from Glasgow that I can clear up (because I asked them).

I notice there's a little edit tool that lets me change stuff myself.

Can I use this, or should I leave alone and just list the things I can improve?

For the time being, we have no effective way to see and approve suggestions. So, you could edit it yourself, but it might not go live for a little while. You can still feel free to post corrections in this thread, and an Arcanist will put them in.

Option #3 is make the edits and then ping us on this thread pointing to the event and/or entries so we can approve them. We can see/approve suggestions, just not all in one central place, so our attention has to be drawn to them first.

Thanks.

Edited segments are my questions from the most recent Edinburgh and Glasgow Signings.

The first entry from Edinburgh and the latter half of Glasgow (except the last).

I've added "I'm asking why" to the beginning of this WoB - https://wob.coppermind.net/events/172-oathbringer-san-diego-signing/#e8343

I believe the question is referring to something written in a book or something of the like. The beginning makes it sound like there's something else present. I also think that the first *inaudible* in the final section is either "spirit webs" or "ecologies", but I can't make out which either.

Such stuff is irrelevant, so we only include the actual question.

I had been arguing about this with a couple of folks for awhile:

I didn't realize horneaters had parshmen blood, didn't even realize that was possible. How closely are humans and parshmen related, do they have a common ancestor? Or is one an artificially created version of the other?

Brandon Sanderson

There was intermixing long ago. Horneaters and Herdazians are both a result. (Signs of this are the stone carapace on Herdazian fingernails and the Horneater extra jaw pieces--in the back of the mouth--for breaking shells.)

Humans and parshmen don't have a common ancestor. And as a side note, both of these strains of humanoids predate the ascension of Honor, Cultivation, and Odium.

...

Blightsong

*via private message*

Some of us believe that you are saying that humans and listeners existed pre-Shattering while some of us believe that you are saying that Horneaters and Herdazians existed pre-Shattering (you have mentioned that humans had been on Roshar since before the Shattering recently). What were you trying to say here?

Brandon Sanderson

Humans (other than those on Yolen) existed pre-Shattering, as did parshmen.

Footnote: Blightsong's parenthetical statement is mistaken; there is no source claiming that humans had been on Roshar since before the Shattering.

I was (and apparently am not the only one) under the impression that this implied that humans existed on Roshar prior to the shattering and that they interbred with parshmen before the shattering as well; after arguing about it I finally asked Brandon and this was his reply:

Quote

Brandon Sanderson

So, if I said Horneaters and Herdazians are pre-shattering mixings, then I was mistaken about the question.

The mixing happened long ago, but well post shattering--thousands of years after, by my current timeline, after humans arrived on Roshar.

I'm not sure what would be the best way to correct that footnote.

Blightsong's parenthetical is still correct. It's after humans arrived on Roshar, which is post-Shattering. There is no evidence humans were there pre-Shattering on Roshar, which is why we had to add that parenthetical.

Where did you ask that question, so we can input it in the correct event?

Humans have been on Roshar for a long time. Desolations occurred for a very long time and so there's plenty of room for the intermixing to occur.
