For me it seemed inspired by Elantris- a white haired person, a massive wall with steps on the other side that keeps the inhabitants in. Obviously the details have been corrupted but thats not unexpected considering its a different world and the time gap is a few thousand years as well.

Jace21
I couldnt help but think of Shinovar when Shallan was telling her story. 1. Mountains protect and isolate the country, much like the wall in the story. 2. I am not aware of any earth-like predators on Roshar, only prey animals such as horse and pigs. No predators in between the village and the wall. 3. No mention of spren at all. 4. Stormlight seems to exist on the other side but not hers until she brings it back. Do the highstorms still infuse as strongly in Shinovar? 5. The wall is to seperate people from something else. Listeners maybe? I know that humans on Roshar came from a variety of places and some at least pre-date the planets shards, but is it possible the Shin actually arrived before everyone else? Yeah I'm going to reread it. I think the story will flow a little better when it's not artificially chopped up into three chapter segments. Plus the art! My wife's going to start at the interludes though, a house divided...

If you know well enough when you'll get the book, you could reread part 1 starting a day earlier, so that when you receive the book you'll be able to immediately delve into part 2 without any break between the parts. that's what I'lll try to do, if I can know when my copy will come. Which I'll probably won't, because transoceanic shipping is always erratic
DocHoliday
Anybody else noticing that there have been alot of appearances of rare Spren in Urithiru? Every bundle of chapters has mentioned shockspren, awespren, or creationspren and almost always is followed with the charachter mentioning how uncommon they are. Seeing as how Pattern confirmed the copycat killer is an Unmade, I cant help but wonder if It's presence on the CR is attracting these rare Spren; and weather these manifestations are being used to "track" the violence in Urithiru. Tinfoil theory I know, but Jasnah's Spren discusses how painspren are called grinders and are apparently "harmmore" instead of harmless. I know it's a long shot that an awespren might be responsible for spying for the Unmade, but clearly a spren Cognitive self can vary greatly from it's Physical self.

StormblessDave
Great three chapters, both the Shallan chapters brought the plot of the story forward satisfactorily. The Dalinar chapter was interesting. The odium spren looks like a kandra, as mentioned in the comments, is it the cause of the copycat murders? The lightweaving scene was beautiful. Most importantly, POOR ROCK! Hopefully, the stormlight should heal his hand The Dalinar chapter marks a turning point in his life.I like Evi(so far) too. The moment we've all been waiting for! Adolin told Shallan about Kaladin and Helaran! What I would like after these chapters- a storytelling competition between Hoid and Shallan

PunSpren
Just thought about the white haired girl in shallan's lightweaving, We just got a painting of Shalash from the end papers this past week. She has white hair, she is the patron of the light weavers. What if Shalash can peer through the light weaving of others....... maybe thats what those crystiline looking masks meant in the painting..... Reread it! You pick up so much more that way. I really liked how highly Adolin obviously thinks of Kaladin at this point. His hatred towards Amaram even though he wasn't personally hurt, the sympathy and respect in his words when discussing Kaladin saving Amaram's life, "the two of us spent time in jail"... I don't necessarily ship Kadolin romantically but I live for protagonist bonding.

Popular Post Argent
Chapter 25: The Girl Who Looked Up Quote The tower of Urithiru was a skeleton, and these strata beneath Shallan’s fingers were veins that wrapped the bones, dividing and spreading across the entire body. Oh, is this how we are going to do this? Strata talk off the bat. Very well then. Quote This is… this is far more extensive than I’ve done before, she thought, surprised. Creationspren had started to appear around her on the benches, in the form of old latches or doorknobs, rolling about or moving end over end. This is definitely a lot more extensive than before. Looks like the stronger you are, the more easily things come to you, and the faster you learn. Which, I think, is a theme in the Cosmere. Quote Had her hair been white when she’d started? Oh, I wonder if her illusions will start getting away from her. I wonder what we are to make of this whole story. Is there a nugget of lore hidden in it? Some pre-Honor / pre-Cultivation parable? Quote As she ran, she pulled a string from her pocket and tied her hair back, becoming Radiant. Radiant would know what to do if she caught this person. *concern* Quote A dark mass wriggled deep inside, squeezing between walls. Like goo, but with bits jutting out. Those were elbows, ribs, fingers splayed along one wall, each knuckle bending backward. Oh, that's not terrifying at all. Good. Quote Veil shoved her way to the front of the crowd, finding a large Horneater man cursing and holding his hand. Rock, she thought, recognizing the bridgeman though he wasn’t in uniform. His hand was bleeding. Like it was stabbed right through the center, Veil thought. Oh, interesting! So whatever this thing is, maybe an Unmade, is mimicking not only murders, but other forms of harm too. But it needs some kind of connection between the victims - the guy Shallan stabbed the other day was also a Horneater. Poor Rock, getting stabbed just for his race... Chapter 26: Blackthorn Unleashed Quote Ryshadium? Yes… he could see the spren trailing after them in the air. Musicspren, for some reason. Made no storming sense. This is why I've been saying they are the unicorns of Roshar! The are bonded to storming musicspren! Or at least attract them for some reason, but I think they are bonded. Quote Enthralled, he cut down foe after foe, sensing a strange rhythm to the fighting, as if the blows of his sword needed to fall to the dictates of some unseen beat. A redness grew at the edges of his vision, eventually covering the landscape like a veil. It seemed to shift and move like the coils of an eel, trembling to the beats of his sword. This. This! This deep in the Thrill, Dalinar is... what, seeing something of Neorgaul's power? Seeing a little bit into the Cognitive? I've been thinking about this red haze every since I read this chapter in Unfettered II, and I don't know what to make of it. It is obviously magical in nature, this is not just a metaphorical "seeing red", and it's tied to the Thrill, but beyond that I haven't been able to come up with anything good. And, I mean, there is also this: Quote Dalinar grinned in satisfaction, then grew chill. A few of those bodies with burned eyes—three men he could spot—wore blue. His own men, bearing the armband of the elites. Quote Clever, bringing me up here, Dalinar thought. Dalinar had the obvious edge in a fair duel—and so Kalanor brought random chance into the fight. Winds, unsteady footing, a plunge that would kill even a Shardbearer. Fun fact, this is much the same tactic Dalinar used when he fought Eshonai back on the Tower, in The Way of Kings. Quote He was running. Some of the men in Gavilar’s group raised hands in welcome. Weak. No weapons presented against him! He could slaughter them all before they knew what had happened. They deserved it! Dalinar deserved to— Aaand I think this is the scene Dalinar keeps referencing, the one where he almost killed his brother. Underwhelming in hindsight (Dalinar hyped it way more in the first two books), but very good in the moment. Chapter 27: Playing Pretend Quote “I cannot say,” Pattern replied. “It is not a thing of us. It is of him.” “An ancient spren of Odium. Delightful.” Another point towards an Unmade. Quote “Malata,” she said. “Though I am not his. I came to him for convenience, as Spark suggested we might look to Urithiru, now that it has been rediscovered.” Because of course the Dustbringer spren would be called Spark. Talk to them Shallan, let me drink the sweet sweet knowledge! Quote “Curious,” the woman said, “that we have only the word of a few stuffy Alethi about this entire ‘Desolation’ business, eh sister?” Shallan blinked at the casual way it was said, along with a wink. Malata smiled and sauntered back toward the front of the room. Oh, storm off. I take it back, don't talk to them, Shallan. This Malata lady just sounds annoying. Quote “Mmm…” Pattern said. “It will be worse when she starts destroying things.” “Destroying?” “Dustbringer,” Pattern said. “Her spren… mmm… they like to break what is around them. They want to know what is inside.” Kind of like Cryptics want to learn through lies? Quote Highmarshal Amaram is our house’s most decorated and well-regarded general. He is beloved of our soldiers, and known the world over. I name him regent and heir to the house title. He is, for all intents, Highprince Sadeas now. I would ask the king to ratify this.” Oh, no... This is going to be such a mess when Kaladin comes back. Shallan, boo, I know I said some things in my last review, but I'm just saying now, if you want to kill two birds with one stone, you could just murder Amaram and use that as a trap for the mimicking spren. Would work out great! Quote “From Kaladin.” Adolin raised his hand to his head. “The bridgeboy insisted that he’d saved Amaram’s life by killing a Shardbearer. Amaram then killed Kaladin’s squad and took the Shards for himself. That’s basically the entire reason the two hate each other.” Oh. Quote Shallan’s throat grew tight. “Oh.” Oh. Quote Absently turning a page, she came across a sketch she didn’t recall making. A series of twisting, maddening lines, scribbled and unconnected. She felt cold. “When did I draw this?” Pattern moved up her dress, stopping under her neck. He hummed, an uncomfortable sound. “I do not remember.” *concern* Quote She flipped to the next page. Here she’d drawn a rush of lines sweeping out from a central point, confused and chaotic, transforming to the heads of horses with the flesh ripping off, their eyes wide, equine mouths screaming. It was grotesque, nauseating. *concern* Quote Her fingers trembled as she turned to the next page. She’d scribbled it entirely black, using a circular motion, spiraling toward the center point. A deep void, an endless corridor, something terrible and unknowable at the end. She snapped the sketchbook shut. “What is happening to me?” *CONCERN*

Erandeni
Shallan's story is awesome, it's probably suposse to meant something, but not a clue. Blackthorne shouldn't be unleashed. Quote “I won them both, but I give them to you. A gift. For your children.” Spoiling Elhokar: the begining Quote “Highprince,” Dalinar finally said. “Highprince,” Amaram said back, tipping his head. “Bastard,” Adolin said. I laughed outloud here, Adolin is great, who wouldn't want to marry him? Quote “Shallan… that Blade. You know where Amaram got that, right?” “On the battlefield?” “From Kaladin.” Adolin raised his hand to his head. No, bad Adolin, very bad.I don't want to marry you anymore.
