@Silk I made two turkey pot pies with our leftover turkey and they were so good. Yours look amazing! Want to compare recipes?

@kaisTotally! I'm nowhere near a competent enough cook to just make up my own recipes (maybe one day I will be, at this rate!) so I used this one from AllRecipes.

More pictures!

We've put together most of the outside of the gate, and gotten I think all of the characters. We're about half done with the first booklet! Marlowe is standing in as a T-Rex...

Interesting to see themes between this and the Falcon in terms of how they deal with the design of large, flat areas. Very cool. And a furrosaurus too!

He's doing a good job of looking menacing!

I am laughing so hard at the "furrosaurus" designation.

Speaking of furrosauruses (furrosauri?): Last night I took my dog outside to chase his toys and somehow the zipper on my coat attached itself to his harness, which I couldn't get undone for several minutes. Let me tell you, you haven't lived until you've been involuntarily tethered to 95 pounds of squirming, overly excitable, three-legged Rottweiler in the pitch dark of night while standing on a path made entirely of ice.

Also: Cranberry muffins! Cranberry apple crumble! I'm glad the muffins turned out to be more appetizing after they were baked, because before they went in the oven the looked an awful lot like brain matter...

At this point I could fill an anthology.

Also! Just did the list cleanup for this year. I don't think I removed anybody who asked to say on, but if I removed anybody by mistake or you just didn't have a chance to respond to the cleanup email, just PM me your email address again and I'll get you right back on!

Forgot to do this when it came out, but the Writing Excuses scholarship application is open for the 2020 Retreat and Cruise:

https://writingexcuses.com/2020/01/06/wxr-2020-scholarships/

If you're a new writer, or looking to make connections, especially in the SciFi/Fantasy genre, I can definitely recommend this cruise. I've been on three, and it's what pushed me to first self-publish. If you can't afford a cruise, the link above is to the scholarship entry, which will cover nearly all your expenses. There are currently four slots open, but there may be more.

If you CAN afford a cruise, you can find the application here. It sells out fast!

https://writingexcuses.com/2019/12/02/announcing-writing-excuses-workshop-retreat-2020/

Again, I would highly recommend you go. It's a great learning opportunity, with excellent teachers.

(Full disclosure: I work with the Alumni Scholarship fund, and all the alumni who judge applicants will recuse themselves from anyone they know who enters, so as not to bias the results)

Project 75192: Update 23 - Bags No.17, Part 1 - "Patchwork"

Literally filling in the gaps now. First, a couple of slivers (1-4) on either side of the cockpit tunnel assembly (5). Satisfying completion of the 'access' cutout on the other side (6,7). Then, in a mirror of the assembly underneath, the circular inset housing the heavy laser turret on the top of the Falcon (8-10). Slots in nicely (11) to (almost) complete the top surface (12).

Project 75192: Update 24 - Bags No.17, Part 2 - "The Final Episode"

Phew, well, this has easily been the biggest build I have ever done, even when--up to about 10/15 years ago--I made towns / cities with every single brick that I have (which is plenty, since I got my first Lego set in, I guesstimate, around 1970/2). It's been great fun; a little grey at times, literally!!, but still tremendously enjoyable.

There are two configurations of the Falcon available, the 'original' Episodes IV to VI, with round dish (1,2), or the later Episode VII Falcon with the more streamlined-looking angular radar assembly (3,4,5,6). No doubt one of Han's later modifications? (My canon knowledge isn't good enough to know who might have done this, although Episode VII may put this marker down, I don't recall. Then, minifigs!! (7) Leia, Han, Chewy watch on as 3PO waves his (its? ;) - one for TCC fans) hands around in agitation (No change there then). (8) Old Han imparts words of wisdom to Rey, Finn and BB8, words like 'bah', 'humbug' and 'grrrr'. (9) Job done! (10) Luke swings in from a completely different set!! What the heck? (11) The trusty X-wing and R2!!!! (12) Drone shot of some sandy, desert planet. Categorically not Queen. No mash-ups here, move along, nothing to see. This is not the sand you're looking for...

Beetles are still there, just not the end sand plot. So YES to beetles v. tie fighter. In the real world, the TIE fighter would win. But since the little guy always wins in Star Wars...

Instead of outlining my new short story this morning, I accidentally wrote 1.5K words on how to fix Frozen 2's character arcs. Guess I just can't let it go. *ducks*

But really, it was a good character exercise. Plus writer therapy.

Does anyone here regularly submit stories to the Writers of the Future contest? I am very motivated by contests and deadlines, so I think I'm going to start submitting something every quarter. Would love to form a support group/peer pressure group. :D

I don't know a whole lot about it, except that Patrick Rothfuss won it in 2002 before he published The Name of the Wind. He mentions it in his acknowledgements. You have my curiosity sparked, though.

Never done it. Not my cup of tea. Allegedly, it has certain associations that I'm not comfortable with.

Elaborate? Only thing I had heard was the L Ron Hubbard connection which people were protesting?

@Snakenaps A lot of authors have used the contest to launch careers. There's no fee to enter and they run four contests a year. Unpublished authors only. If you are a finalist, it gets you on the radar of agents and publishers, plus there's a week long writing seminar for finalists. Brandon Sanderson was a finalist as well, along with Nnedi Okorafor.

Now that I have the time to do my own research, the Church of Scientology is the only thing I can find as well.

The contest is intriguing. I might have to try it out once I finish revising my current book. The Illustrator of the Future might interest my sister. I'm a good artist, but I don't think my art is quite the style they would be looking for.

Well, due to everyone's favorite virus, they just closed the schools in our part of Washington state. I will probably not have time to read people's stuff for a while as I now have to homeschool 4 kids. Anyone else affected?
