Oathbringer Cover Revealed

I´m a bit disappointed by the cover. I like that it shows the Desolation is already in full swing or at least that the fighting is already serious enough to threaten cities, but why is Jasnah looking away from the thunderclast? She doesn´t even seems to be looking to the people she potentially just saved but is looking upward, why? I would have prefered one of the other two options shown.

I initially thought thunderclast, but I always imagined them being more animal like. And if it is, OMG MUCH bigger than I ever imagined.

I love the floating stairs under Jasnah's feet. It'll be interesting to see how that works. Plus, it'll be nice to finally officially meet Ivory.

I'm so hyped.

Quote

Dalinar glanced over his shoulder in time to see rock emerging from the water. A long arm! Slender, perhaps fifteen feet long, it burst from the water, then slammed back down as if to get a firm purchase on the lakebed. Another arm rose nearby, elbow toward the sky, then they both heaved as if attached to a body doing a push-up.

A giant body ripped itself out of the rocky floor. It was like someone had been buried in sand and was now emerging. Water streamed from the creature’s ridged and pocked back, which was overgrown with bits of shalebark and submarine fungus. The spren had somehow animated the stone itself.

As it stood and twisted about, Dalinar could make out glowing red eyes— like molten rock—set deep in an evil stone face. The body was skeletal, with thin bony limbs and spiky fingers that ended in rocky claws. The chest was a rib cage of stone. “Thunderclast!” soldiers yelled. “Hammers! Ready hammers!”

Words of Radiance - Chapter 4 - Taker of Secrets

That's from Dalinar's vision from the Purelake. The creature on the cover seems to be bigger.

Thunderclasts are supposed to look like chasmfiends right?

My money is on that giant being one of the things seen fighting in the storms at the end of WoR. Possibly an unmade?

Edit: nope, Peter confirmed on reddit it was a Thunderclast, and that there are different variants of them.

This cover is just sooo cool. I love the giant creature in the background.

@PallonianFire, she's flying by the power of the Rule Of Cool, which I suspect is the same natural force that is keeping those steps afloat. What I'm personally more curious about is why Ivory decided to take a shape of a sword so big, it could swing Jasnah rather than the other way around. Probably Rule Of Cool, too.

More important question:

HOW IS JASNAH FLYING?

She doesn't have Gravitation, and if someone else Lashed her, she'd be glowing. And for that matter, how are the stairs flying, too? Yeah, she probably soulcast them, but that doesn't make them ignore gravity...

I think She Simply used the stair to reach the Wall and Soulcast It.

If you notice the sketch show a bit the dynamic

Does anyone recognize the symbol on the flag? At the bottom?

It seems to me like it's very similar to the pattern on Dalinar's (?) back on the first cover. Maybe that's just how Michael Whelan paints the Kholin glyph.

A question: what is Jasnah doing with this golden wall thing? The description on Tor says she's rebuilding a wall with magic metal, but I don't recall seeing her do anything like it before. Is she soulcasting smoke into metal or something?

Still, this cover is fantastic.

Probably just soulcasting air into metal.

Love the cover, and now the countdown to November is going to take even longer, nooooooo.  Anyway, something I noticed that bugs me about the cover just a bit:  why is Jasnah floating, do you think?  There are what appear to be conjured stairs beneath her, but she doesn't even seem to be standing on those either.  I did not think that the "transformation" and "transportation" surges would have granted her abilities tied to "gravitation" and Windrunner powers.  At first I thought perhaps she was in Shadesmar, but reading the full Tor article descriptions from Michael confirms she is in RW Roshar.  Thoughts anyone?

Edit: I should really make sure to read all comments before posting, as this question has already been noted and asked.  Sorry

Transportation is the surge of motion, so Jasnah has telekinetic abilities

Edit: I thought I remembered her levitating a piece of paper and then burning it, but I may be misremembering. I'm looking for the passage now. Either way, I do think telekinesis is part of the surge of Transportation and I do agree that it is one of the more powerful surges. If telekinesis really is part of it, it is bound to have some limitations in range or other ways.

Also, are we catching Ivory just as he is about to coalesce into a sword, or what? He's white and fuzzy in the middle, both things that are very un-sprenblade from what we've seen. I wonder how much artistic license the artist is allowed to take on these.
