Ammanas
Apologies if this is old news, but a new anthology is coming out this month called Galactic Empires (edited by Neil Clarke) and it includes the Brandon Sanderson short story Firstborn. Evidently Firstborn can be purchased elsewhere (99 cent) on kindle. I mention this news because I had never heard of Firstborn before and it might be of interest to someone here. Here is the table of contents for the collection if anyone is interested: Table of Contents: - “Winning Peace” by Paul J. McAuley - “Night’s Slow Poison” by Ann Leckie - “All the Painted Stars” by Gwendolyn Clare - “Firstborn” by Brandon Sanderson - “Riding the Crocodile” by Greg Egan - “The Lost Princess Man” by John Barnes - “The Waiting Stars” by Aliette de Bodard - “Alien Archeology” by Neal Asher - “The Muse of Empires Lost” by Paul Berger - “Ghostweight” by Yoon Ha Lee - “A Cold Heart” by Tobias S. Buckell - “The Colonel Returns to the Stars” by Robert Silverberg - “The Impossibles” by Kristine Kathryn Rusch - “Utriusque Cosmi” by Robert Charles Wilson - “Section Seven” by John G. Hemry - “The Invisible Empire of Ascending Light” by Ken Scholes - “The Man with the Golden Balloon” by Robert Reed - “Looking Through Lace” by Ruth Nestvold - “A Letter from the Emperor” by Steve Rasnic Tem - “The Wayfarer’s Advice” by Melinda M. Snodgrass - “Seven Years from Home” by Naomi Novik - “Verthandi’s Ring” by Ian McDonald Edit: Just saw a link in one of the above threads for the 17th Shard threads. Firstborn can be obtained for free here: http://www.tor.com/2008/12/17/firstborn/ Edited January 7, 2017 by Ammanas
Mirdrim
Firstborn has been available on kindle for several years, if I'm not mistaken.
Ammanas
It has, but this is a new way to get it in print. Also I'm sure there are some Sanderson fans like me that have never heard of Firstborn and wanted to draw attention to it. Even though it's a new book this a old story. I think it's hard to get in print so if you are waiting for a cheap way to get it in print with what appears to be some other great stories then this is worth a look.
Ammanas
I've read Firstborn and really liked it! Basically is a story of what if you were a younger brother to a evil Andrew Wiggen. Just as good as many of the stories in Arcanum Unbounded. The rest of the Galactic Empires anthology (from what I've read) is solid as well.
