Random Stuff X: Something Weird

There was a dragonfly hanging out on my fence, not really sure why it was so still, but I got to photograph it using my 10x magnifying loupe as a zoom lens, the resulting image is pretty phenomenal. Totally looks like a multi-limbed mustachioed villain with a somewhat inverted skull like aspect.

*UPDATE EDIT*

So there was a lemon yellow dragonfly hanging out on our marionberries and I got a picture of its inverted mouth parts using my 14x magnifying loupe, this guy looks like he's in the middle of a karate chop using all 4 arms. He also looks a bit less evil and slightly worried...

A picture of the full dragonfly is spoilered below.

I’m sure it’s probably common knowledge, but sea turtles can breath out of their butts. Just sayin.

That's pretty cool, but leave it to the bug world to take it to the next level.

The Bombardier Beetle, using Hydroquinone, Hydrogen Peroxide and an enzymatic catalyst can create an explosion within its abdomen to shoot out the boiling hot, caustic mixture from its backside. (Image below spoilered because it's a looping gif).

From the KQED Deep Look article about the Bombardier Beetle

Quote
"If the beetle’s explosion chamber were the size of the inside of a car,” said Eric Arndt, a doctoral student who has studied bombardiers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, “the blast would release about the same energy as about two pounds of TNT"

The world is indeed a weird and fascinating place.

Well the pistol shrimp can close it’s claw so fast that it rips the water apart and makes a bubble of plasma

Your brain has and will continue to lie to you.

Fortunately for me, I decided to get rid of that thing years ago.

Every time you breathe out, some of that breath will one day be eaten in the form of a plant by another person.

My daughter found a really pretty mushroom with a translucent upturned cap and gills that were edged with black, giving it the appearance of a mop of hair, so I did the logical thing and drew John Lennon from the early days of The Beattles on one of fingers and plopped the mushroom hair on.

*EDIT*

Here's another one in a similar vein.

My same daughter has been removing the reflective coating from cds and then burning them with matches to deform and shape them. Some of them formed really cool bubbles that formed when the plastic thinned and the heat from the match made the air underneath rise up. The coolest one she made is spoilered below.

And here is her googley eyed thumb looking like an alien in a flying saucer.

Maybe I'll update this later with more finger art.
