Glad I was able to explain it. Now to actually figure out all the oath level powers and the different orders.

If you want some inspiration, I did something like that with my Radiant University LG. It's modeled off of the Kingkiller Chronicles games, so it's quite long. The section you're looking for is Section 6.

Keep in mind, I haven't actually run this game yet, so who knows what the balance is like :P

Majora's Mask is fun! I recall someone wanted to run a time looping Majora's Mask game for the first BT - I think El came up with a ruleset with iterations of three cycles before time rewinds and it's a straightforward V/E game, but felt it was potentially too complicated for the first BT ever.

Y'know, I actually spent a few hours today conceptualizing a MM game that already sounds very different than yours, but is fairly interesting (flipless with some elements from, or spiritually like, The Resistance: Avalon).

Premise

Requires 20 Players. The 15 Link’s Zealots win if they obtain 3 of 4 Boss Masks. The 5 Minions of Mischief win if they obtain 3 of 4 Boss Masks

This LG is flipless. Player alignments will not be revealed upon death. 3 Days and 3 Nights will be looped up to 4 times. There will be no execution on Day 1-1, but all Days afterward demand an execution. MoMs have access to the All-Night Mask, which allows one MoM to submit two kills every Night. At the end of every Loop, LZs will earn the dungeon’s Boss Mask if they have 2 or more living villagers for every 1 living MoM (2x parity or >). MoMs will earn the Boss Mask otherwise. At the start of every Loop, all players will be resurrected and which team won the previous Boss Mask will be revealed.

In the event of a 2-2 Draw by the end of the 4th Loop, the 11 living players will enter Day 4: The Final Day and get one last vote to determine the game’s winner. Whoever is executed will lose alongside their team.

Yes! :P

Though rupees don't survive through time :P

What if you put a person in the game as Link, still flipless but Link can earn the Deku mask at the end of the first cycle, Zora at the end of the second cycle and Goron at the end of the third if he survives? Basically he's kinda like Merlin? IDK, need to think on him more.

But this looks like such a fun game. A few questions

Can each mask only be bought once?

Do you lose all your rupees on death?

This looks like an absolute blast. My only comment is that the bunny hood is way too powerful. If someone starts the game with at least 5 rupees, then the only reasonable thing to do D1 is buy the bunny hood. Because you can very quickly rack up rupees if you’re committed to the 5/each of RP/discussion posts per cycle. That’s 20 rupees per cycle. That would be 170-180 rupees (depending on if bunny hood would take effect N1-1 or not) by the end of N3-3. Gaining 30-40 other rupees throughout the game seems like a trivial task to achieve before Day 4-1. Especially for the elim team, who can vote one of their own out and gain their rupees.

Mhm, you're probably right it should go down to 1.5x max (or the ability should change outright). The Fierce Diety Mask is more of a joke / tease than a genuine mechanic, so that does put it in serious risk of being obtainable.

Will say I was calculating player death when I did the same, since masks return to the shop when a player dies and their rupees reset based on number of times they've died. But then I also saw an elim who gets the Bunny Hood and always submits kills would be raking in cash, so figured to make the e!modifier 1.5x

So yeah, 1.5x for both sounds good?

Dunno how I missed this :o

Do you lose all your rupees on death?

Ah, unless you bank them apparently  but maybe I'll just say living counts as banking them

I did consider the Deku, Goron, and Zora masks just being handed out during their respective Cycle 2, but didn't love the abilities I came up with for them, so if you have any good ideas to further this, lemme know :o Otherwise the plan was that everyone can Transform for RP flavor while in the relevant locations

Yeah, only 1 mask of each in the game.

Rupees are lost on death, yeah. If you're executed, they're distributed evenly among the voters. If you're NK'd, your killer gets a fourth and the rest poof in the wind. Masks are also lost on death, but instead of going to someone else, they "break" until the next Loop and reappear in the shop.

Yeah I think 1.5x works. And it would be unfair to make it worse for elims. Plus players could probably find a way to use that as an alignment scanner.

  • Romani Mask (Red 20) Summon an ice-cold glass of Romani milk to drink and survive 1 death.
  • Captain’s Hat (Red 20) Commune with the dead (doc).
  • Keaton Mask (Purple 50) Summon a ghost fox to redirect a player’s action.
  • Stone Mask (Purple 50) If donned, become an untargetable object.
  • Gibdo Mask (Purple 50) If you die, remain as a zombie with a vote.
  • Circus Leader Mask (Purple 50) Summon the Circus to steal a player’s Mask.
  • Mask of Truth (Silver 100) Discover a player’s alignment.
  • Great Fairy Mask (Silver 100) Revive a dead player.
  • Fierce Diety Mask (Gold 200) Your team wins the game.

Thoughts?

1. This is a very cool and original mechanical premise.

2. It is interesting that you are kind of fusing SE and Avalon. I have a game ruleset in a doc that kind of fuses SE and Secret Hitler. It is absolutely nothing like yours though :P

3. The balance of this thing is hard for me to analyze. My instinct is that it somewhat favors the elims in general, but that if the village gets lucky and wins during the first loop then that significantly tilts the rest of the game in the village's favor.

4. When you include an item like the Fierce Deity Mask and set a high bar but not an impossible one, be aware that players will figure out a way to obtain it :)

4a. Do not underestimate the ability to gain a fraction of the money from people you vote for or kill.

Of course you of all people would bring this up. :P

1. Thank you :D

2. Ironically I’ve never played Avalon, just know about it, but I have played lots of Secret Hitler. I want to check that out.

3. I’ve personally run through a lot of different scenarios and think everything mostly balances out, barring any lucky or well reasoned early roleblocks, executions, or Blast Mask collateral. During the first loop, only three active roles are accessible (the blue). Each successive loop effectively adds the next tier, assuming everyone is keeping up with activity for max Rupees. Both the villagers and elims have a lot of different options that can help them squeak out a win in even the worst case scenarios, like a Romani extra life or the Gibdo zombification. There’s honestly a ton of fascinating ways that the game could go that I’d love to see it run multiple times

4. I also did the math for that and believe it’s near impossible with the 1.5x bunny mask, max activity, elim kill earnings and consistent execution revenue. That said, I welcome anyone to try ^_^

1. You're welcome :D

2. Hit me up on Discord and I'll share the rules link  I already showed it to Kas a little bit ago and we had a lengthy conversation about it

Be warned though if you want to see the rules that there are potentially *some* game secrets in the doc. Tbf, nothing is super secret, part of the reason for the secrecy is simply to avoid infodump (this game focuses on government and there can be a good number of distinct game states depending on what has happened so far, players only know what the current state is not all of the possible ones, although players are informed at each juncture which possible actions will significantly alter the game state). But it is something to disclaim, because there is information that I am not planning on revealing to the players up-front.

3. Interesting. Yes, the role interactions seem quite complex! :) I do like the way players killed in previous rounds are given increasingly powerful items, this is a nice way to give the losing side more chances to make a comeback if they can earn one. Also a consolation prize for losing your rupees on dying (which tends to cut the other way, naturally). Can items be passed around?

4. "near impossible" :)

Let's talk about this math. Let's assume there's one elim who reaches max rupees by doing the bunny mask stuff. That means they'd earn 130 rupees before D4-1. Now let's assume everyone they kill also gets max rupees, the elim doesn't exe anyone, none of their victims die before being killed, and that no one they kill buys items. Also gonna assume rupees are distributed to players last.

Victims:

  • D1-1: 0 rupees earned
  • D1-2: 2-3 rupees earned (1/4 of 10)
  • D1-3: 6-7 rupees earned (1/4 of 25)
  • D2-1: 10 rupees earned (1/4 of 40)
  • D2-2: 13-14 rupees earned (1/4 of 55)
  • D2-3: 17-18 rupees earned (1/4 of 70)
  • D3-1: 21-22 rupees earned (1/4 of 85)
  • D3-2: 25 rupees earned (1/4 of 100)
  • D3-3: 28-29 rupees earned (1/4 of 115)

(Ranges given because I am unsure if you would round up or down)

Anyway, the total number of rupees a player could earn (assuming everything I said earlier is true) through killing is 122. That plus the 130 from engagement is plenty to get the immediate win. Granted, we can't assume that all of those stipulations I made to make this math happen will occur. Let's say an elim only makes half of that from killing. That's 61 rupees, which brings us to a total of 191. Now, if they exe people as well, there's a chance for them to make that extra 9 rupees at some point.

The point I'm trying to get at is that it is much more likely than you might think for players to try and find a way to game up to that 200 rupees.

Yeah, these calculations line up with my max estimation, though I feel it would require a perfect storm to pan out. There’s lots of ways that kills can be disrupted or discovered throughout those 9 nights, and the PoE naturally closes with every repeating loop (elim NKs + exe analysis). I will consider it more and probably decide before the game runs, if it ever does. Though I’d be curious to hear other suggestions.

I guess the thing is that I'm not really against the Fierce Deity Mask not actually being impossible, just bloody difficult. Something like "if it's that difficult and you were that determined to go get it, and things somehow aligned, sure?" Might be biased by the fact some of the games Mads showed me do have a mechanic like that and they didn't break.
