Mid-Range Game 17: Hic Sunt Leones

I like the plan, but it's not a confirmation of guilt by itself. What if a Faithful with lots of merit decides that they need an ionblade?

Something I'd like to note is that the Foresworn could have multiple kills-- one from the gifted ionblade, and more from purchased ionblades. Again, we wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a Gaithful with an ionblade and a Foresworn with an ionblade. If we have multiple kills, looking at people with lots of merit won't help, because a Faithful with an ionblade looks no different from a Foresworn with an ionblade.

@Amanuensis, can items be traded/given away by non-Julii means? Are there any secret roles, mechanics, or roles in this game?

Lopen has an excellent point. Learning that someone is not Rath is actually rather useful.

And, Rae, then that Faithful comes clean to someone before they're scanned. Alternatively, they decide not to be an idiot and buy the ionBlade on a cycle when they weren't the highest earner of Merit. Shouldn't be too difficult.

It's true that multiple ionBlades would mean we couldn't tell which was the evil kill, but if there were multiple kills the Julii couldn't do anything anyway - they have to steal the blade before the kill is made, obviously. And hopefully any purchasers of ionBlades will notify someone ahead of time so that if they are somehow stolen from it's not going to be a problem.

EDIT: Also, I'd appreciate a RP partner. :) Lumina can't exactly come up to anyone, but I'd welcome anyone coming up to her.

So, does that mean that if you don't post at least once every 24 hours, you'll lose 5 merit? So the penalty isn't just for not posting during a Cycle?

When I said day I meant cycle.

Items cannot be traded/given away by non-Julii. There may or may not be at least one of those three things in this game.

I might just add some character description before my rp.

So Tia/Hestia/Vesta, was a Olympic knight. She was hurt in a battle 4 months back and it rendered her an amnesiac. She has reverted to a more childlike personality, and has done things like, dying her hair bright red, and bedazzling her armours. She’s around 30 whereas Tarna is more like 7.

--------

“Ooooh Tia look! There's a really sour faced prickly pine over there that would be soooo funny to prank!” Tarna was excitedly pointing over at someone who…..wouldn’t have exactly been Tia’s first choice of pranking targets.

“That woman? Really? But… she's so serious...” Tia responded hesitantly.

“All the better!! The serious ones are much more fun to prank! You know this Tia” Tarna grinned cheekily at Tia, who pulled a face back. Yes they were more fun, but if the pranks went badly…. Well, Tia was the one who had to deal with Tarnas mischief.

“Okaaaay…..Fine. Which should we pull on her?” Tia said with a smile as she began rummaging through the supplies she’d brought. “I’ve got…. A glitter pie we can throw at someone… some string to trip people with…. Spicy sauce for food….i’ve got-”

Tarna’s face sudden blossomed with a beautiful little evil grin. “I know! We'll… wing it!” She then proceeded to hold up a bag containing a….half rotted dead bird….

Tia blinked. What..... Where did she even get that…..

Tarna giggled, “We can tape this to her back! And then she’d be walking around smelling all fowl! Bird back! It would be super funny Tia! Can we do it? Pleeeeease?”

…Why do I get the feeling we're gonna egret this? Tia chuckled to herself. “Alright then, owl give this eggcellent plan a go. I got some tape here so we’re all set!”

“Yay!” Tarna clapped her hands, “I’ll distract her, while you do the prank!”

Tia smiled, “alright then!” The pair split up, Tia approaching Lumina from behind, Tarna running directly up to the woman, Lumina.

Tarna began babbling at Lumina, saying nothing important. Tia rolled her eyes and subtly attempted to attach the birds corpse to the woman's back.

(I'll let you decide if they are caught in the act or run away first, El )

Thirst and hunger eventually overcame Quintus' desire to remain unobtrusive, so he took the opportunity of a gap in the people milling around to slip through the crowd and grab a drink.

Unfortunately, he then turned around and nearly spilled it all over a lancer's tunic. He peered nervously up into Stick's face, who he hadn't notice lurking in a corner (much as he himself had been doing), but seeing the familiar expression of resignation and determination to not let this be a complete waste of time on her face, he ventured an attempt at conversation despite his lisp. He couldn't always remain silent, of course.

"Good evening, Lansther Sthick. How are you thisth fine day?"

(Wow, I might should have chosen something other than a lisp, that's going to be weird to use in dialog.)

Darkness made his way to the Aurie quick enough.

But at the magnificent gate that was open to the Aurie's courtyard....it struck. And Darkness forgot himself, fully moving into his new persona. It never forgot to make him forget. To prevent any cheating.

It always struck.

A few moments of disorientation, his head spun, his ears rung, if it weren't for a few helpful Browns, he would have fallen.

" Master Dominus....are you alright?", one of the browns asked

Pierce couldn't answer for a few moments, then abruptly, the world came into focus, the ringing and spinning stopped. He coughed.

" Ah sorry for inconveniencing you my dear Browns, what would your names be? Your concern is to be rewarded ("are you sure your alright Dominus?") Yes, yes, of course I'm alright, would you care to escort me to where the party is being held?"

"Of course, Dominus, come this way"

They helped Pierce along for a few steps, then when he was certain he could walk, he thanked them and continued without there support. They had directed him to a great hall, lights, laughter and chatter leaked out of the almost closed doors.

"Thanks again my dear Browns, names please?" Pierce asked, smiling jovially at them, back to his former self.

They shifted uncomfortably for a moment, and Pierce's smile faltered for a bit, then one of them spoke up, "Me name's Pater, master Dominus, and this would be Schmuel, Pavil, Adolf and Joseph. We are glad to have been of service for you tonight".

"I will make sure you are all suitably rewarded, you are dismissed". The four of them scurried off quickly, slinking into the shadows of the halls and the pillars.

Pierce sighed contentedly. Travelling space with ol' Stick may have been a blast, but there's honestly no place like Mars. Rolling his shoulders and cracking his neck, Pierce stepped forward and pushed the door open, stepping into a party in full swing. Stick stumbled past him into the hall, obviously drunk again. Pierce smiled and called out to the Lancers in the room.

"Heeeelllloooo everybodayy!! Pierce is back in gold, now whoo's re-day to to paaaartayyy!!??"

The music stopped, the chatter stopped, the laughter stopped. "Oh look, Pierce is back", one of the older Lancers cheered, and just like that everyone broke out in laughter, groups called him over, people clasped his hand and gave him a good hearty slap across his back. He raised his hand in declination to the groups, searching the hall for Khazad. It would be good to see him again. After what happened with Rolah, it would be good to make him laugh.

Remembeeeer whyyy you are heeeere....the Forsworn surrouund you and the other Faithfulll, slowly closing in....working too theeeir eeendgame. Pierce started, what was that voice? What did it mean?? Who or what are the Forsworn? Shaking himself, and taking the voice to be an indicator that he had been away from civilisation for too long. Shuddering he continued on his way, amid the laughter and the voices.

He began to notice things, people lurking in the shadows... not making any move to join the festivities, taking to observing from a distance. He saw two girls run past him giggling, clutching something in their hands. He wondered what they were up to. And then he saw group of older Lancers chatting in a circle, sitting on cushions and sipping drinks. He made his way to Tiberius, pushing through the crowd jostling around him.

"...icated to you, and my death will be in your service. This I swear, as I have sworn before and will swear again, my sword and my life and my death to you.”

Pierce caught this little oath between a female Lancer and Tiberius, although he wasn't sure how, she had been speaking so softly. She rose from her bow, and exchanged a few more words with Tiberius. Darn she cut an appealing figure. Most Lancers ended up squandering their appearance as Golds, still making large and imposing figures, but still with just a teensy bit more fat to their girths. He caught the name "Lumina" in their exchange and decided to remember it. She turned around, and her lithe, strong figure marched down the steps. Pierce nodded to her, "Lancer". She nodded to him as well, but hindered him not, continuing on her way.

Pierce took a shallow breath and walked up the steps, executing an immensely complicated and long ceremonial bow he had learnt in his travels. Tiberius chuckled at it, "Ah Pierce, it's been too long since the laughter you enticed has filled these halls".

Pierce flashed him a grin, "It's my pleasure my Lord," he said, giving another small bow, "I am but your humble servant".

"..And one of my most trusted".

"You flatter me my leige, I hope you don't expect any vows from me aye?"

Tiberius stood and hugged Pierce, "Of course not, you have served me well for decades, that's as good as any vow"

Pierce laughed, "It's good to see you to, you old dog"

Tiberius chuckled, then a moment passed. "Pierce, I want you to stay alert for me. Can you do that? I can't explain the feeling, but...there seem to be other forces at work here on Mars. The Sons of Ares are problem enough... but I am uneasy. Do me a favour will you? Can you speak to the other Lancers? Learn their allegiance?"

"Your wish is my command, my lord. I shall execute it with utmost proficiency"

"Good to hear...good to hear, thank you Pierce, and may you live many more decades"

"I wouldn't mind a few extra years, it's been good to see you Tiberius, but I need to go find Khazad, may I be dismissed?"

"You may, Lancer," Tiberius replied, formality returned.

Pierce nodded, then gave a little wave, turned on his heel and made his way down the steps.

"Khazad you slippery eel, where are you?" He muttered to himself, his sense of unease growing.

Hm. One benefit to confirming a players role is to confirm that they're not Rath, right? Because I don't think anyone can be from 2 Houses.

I'm fairly certain that you can't be from two houses.  It doesn't make a lot of sense, from a OOG perspective, or from a balance perspective.

If I ever get enough Merit to get an ionBlade, which seems somewhat unlikely, I'm not sure that I'll want to notify the thread.  I'd be worried that the Elims will start targeting people who have ionBlades, to insure that they are getting the only kill.   It will probably be helpful to clear someone especially for that purpose.   It would work sort of like QF15, except we would actually have cleared the person getting the info.

I like Doc's plan, but I feel we're going to run into some difficulties now that Bugsy has spread it all over the thread.  Not sure that that was such a good idea.  Also, the idea that you could force different people to get the highest merit each cycle would sort of kill discussion depending on who you had do it, and how it was done.  I won't really be able to keep up with some of the other posters here, simply because of scheduling conflicts.  I'm sure that I'm not the only one, either.

Khazad finally worked up the courage to leave the wall (and thus leave his back exposed), although by the time he did so about five minutes had passed. The bustle of the people, the background chatter, the numerous objects entering and leaving Khazad's view: an assassin could be anywhere, anytime, with anything, and Khazad would not know about it. That was not a good thought.

Suspicious object, right side, four tables down and one over.

"What?"

Rotting bird!

"Rotting bird? I knew you were paranoid and a bit crazy, but I didn't know I'd snapped!"

But then Khazad saw the bird in question. He did a double-take. He did another one when he realized that the bird was about to end up on Lumina's back.

Lumina's not going to like that at all.

"I'm with you. Better to get over there before someone gets killed."

But hey, that's one fewer person to stab you in the back, right?

Khazad took off at his usual brisk pace, but hindered by the crowds he wasn't sure if he would make it in time.

El, you can decide if Khazad arrives in time to interfere.

Danii stifled a giggle as she saw a man a few feet in front of her trip over his long cloak. Colours! How did someone even manage to tie the ends of it together without him noticing?

The amusing image dissolved as she caught sight of a fading glow on the man's cloak. Danii's heart leapt as she realized what it was.
She looked up, and there it was, the familiar face. Nyanah, the Rosharian.
She hadn't seen her after their first interaction the day she and the Jackal landed on Mars, and had often wondered how she was faring in this strange world.

Danii decided to go talk to her, but apparently she was off to be given a tour by the man whose clothes she'd lashed. Sanis, his name was, wasn't it?

Tour seemed like it would take a while so Danii swept her eyes around for friendly faces to have small conversation with in the meantime, maybe try to fish for some info about the Healer. Doing so, she witnessed a rather awkward moment: a young man in tuxedo with his hand extended out to a man in red and green shawl, who, while staring at Tuxedo Man, seemed to be lost in his own thoughts as the moment stretched and Tuxedo Man's hand remained extended.

Well then...

Danii walked over to them, snapped her fingers at Shawl Man's face , and shook Tuxedo Man's hand.
"Nice to meet you, sir. Enjoying the party?"

Stick listens closely to some Sevro guy explain and expose some other lancer's plan. The plan's good, but she can't help but listen to her suspicious conscience: That's a great way for a foresworn to get the message out to all their other fellow foresworn without having to use any Merit..

Stick immediately pushes the thought away, but it lingers at the back of her mind. She tries to focus on the one Rule she always follows: Never take action against anyone without solid proof. Unless you're desperate. Then, you can do however you like.

----------

Stick stifles a sigh as she looks down at her dank tunic then back at the newcomer's face and raises an eyebrow.

After an awkward pause, he says, "Good evening, Lansther Sthick. How are you thisth fine day?"

A lisp, possibly a pretend one. Good cover for a foresworn, makes them seem innoce- Stick stops herself and tries to blocks out those thoughts. Being suspicious of everyone isn't going to get her anywhere, though caution is always important. She wishes (not for the first time) that she was a Lune. That would make her job wayy easier.

"I'm well, though feeling a bit paranoid lately," she answers as she leans forward to grab a tissue from one of the nearby tables. "And you are...?"

"Quintusth"

Stick opens her mouth to reply but stops when she notices a woman attempting to attach...dead birds...onto someone's back. Stick points them out to Quintus, and leans back against the wall, a smile on her lips, deciding not to interfere. This is going to be amusing.

It's somewhat amusing how many people are waiting for El to give the go ahead on some RP.  I think two are following her, and two more are following them.  Then there's two watching it happen...  This is going to be a rather large event. :P  I intend to RP out my characters reaction, so I guess I'm waiting on Elbereth as well.

The silence was getting awkward. The man had not yet responded to him, seemingly lost in his own thoughts, leaving his hand hanging awkwardly between them. Spartacus took a long look around the room, wondering whether to retract his hand, or to try speaking up again.

Then fortunately, fortunately, he was saved.

A woman strode forward, looking just like any other Gold, with typical golden hair and a sly smile. She snapped her fingers at Shawl man’s face, then met his hand with her own, watching him carefully.

“Nice to meet you, sir,” She smiled. “Enjoying the party?”

Spartacus shot her a relieved smile, shaking her hand. “Thank you, for that. Spartacus au {redacted}, at your service. And you are?”

Even as he asked, he noticed that she was one of the three offworlders he had vowed to keep an eye on. There had been three… The girl with the red and gold hair, who carried arguments with the air, and the smiling twins. She was one of the twins…

Offhandedly, before she replied, he shot off a question. “I noticed you taking a glance at Sanis’ cloak before you came over. I’m guessing you noticed that glow. Have you any idea what it was?”

Because @AliasSheep might have missed my response. @Daniyah, @Assassin in Burgundy, I look forward to exposing the both of you for the murderous, rabbit wielding Returned that you are...

"Uhhh, sorry Sanis but i don't really know. I feel like he should be entitled to do what he wants without being disturbed" said Jefry in hope that this would deflect the question. "Now if you will excuse us, I think me and Tenebrum here should go get some food because i'm getting kind of hungry."

With this, Jefry hurried away as fast as Tenebrum would allow toward the banquet that he had seen earlier.

"Well that sucked." declared Jefry followed by a sigh of relief. "could have been really bad."

"Yeah, when I saw that it was him I had a small panic attack. Do you think he saw it?"

"I caught traces of it, but that may be because ive known you for a while."

"I hope that's the case"

"I feel kinda bad just leaving her there with him like that." I spoke quietly "I mean, i don't think she even knows what she's getting herself into. I feel bad for her."We continued walking as i spoke. I was tempted to look back at her but decided against it. It's better not to get anywhere near Sanis. He's rather terrifying. I lean closer to Jefry. "Thanks for coming to my rescue, like always."

"Oh, it was nothing, just being a good friend." He spoke happily. His smile was his usual silly one, but i noticed a bit of concern hidden within his eyes. Most people wouldn't but i can always tell because we've been friends for so long. He's always been there for me.

"You know, have i told you how lucky i am to have you as a friend?" I asked with my usual gentle voice, but it was a bit more relaxed around him.

"Only like a million times." He responded with his signature silliness that always makes me smile.

Quintus followed Stick's arm and realized what was happening.  Grateful for the excuse not to make further conversation, and for someone else to be potentially in trouble, he leaned back against the wall next to Stick (not so close as to appear forward or familiar with her, of course), and watched the scene play out.  Sanis was normally sure on his feet, but seemed to struggle briefly with his robe, and Lumina appeared ready to capitalize on the situation.  She was about to be the butt of the joke, however, and Quintus wasn't at all sure that wouldn't lead to a duel, so he considered stepping in and stopping the girl trying to place it.  His usual desire to remain out of harm's way took over, though, and he remained where he was.  This was a party, after all.  Surely no one would actually duel during the party anyways.

He was still standing there as Brown-Piercing strode confidently into the hall (very unusual name that was for a Gold, though there had been other unusual names around as well, such as, well, Stick).  The man's reputation preceded him, and Quintus' interest was piqued as he strode familiarly up to Tiberius, ignoring the potential fall if Tiberius were inclined to shove him off.  As Brown (the Gold) made his way down the steps, though, Quintus observed his cautious gaze sweeping over the crowd, as if searching.  Quintus straightened up.  Did Tiberius have suspicions about the Lancers at his own party?  These were his most loyal and effective followers, for the most part.  Surely someone like Stick, or Khazad, or Lumina, wouldn't be a danger to Tiberius, right?  He didn't know everyone here, and of course someone like the Jackal was someone only trusted with caution, but he didn't know of anyone here who he was sure would pose a danger.  He'd have to keep his own eyes open, for his own sake as well as his liege's.

I'm sceptical of Doc's plan.  It requires putting too much faith in a small group of people.  In addition, I saw El suggesting that the only reason the highest Merit poster wouldn't have an ionBlade is if it had been stolen, but if I read the rules right, only the Forsworn actually get a chance of the free ionBlade.  Thus, if they don't actually have one then either it was stolen or they never had one in the first place.  And the converse is also true, if they do have one, there's a good chance they're Forsworn.  This is especially true in the early turns, when it's very unlikely that someone would have enough Merit to purchase an ionBlade (either cycle 3 or cycle 4 at the minimum assuming a Bellona and depending on whether you're allowed to put in orders for items with Merit you're going to recieve that cycle).  Now that I think about it, for the first few turns, this might be a good way of assessing that situation.  The idea of lots of people stealing ionBlades, unfortunately, could obfuscate that in that the highest Merit poster could be a Julii who has just stolen an ionBlade yet is Faithful.  This is possible since only Forsworn would recieve the ionBlades, so the person who actually gets it could be perhaps second or third most in Merit.

I'd prefer not to have ionBlade's overall, if I'm honest, private kills are too far out of the public eye for my liking, but if it becomes necessary, I suppose it would be justified in occuring.  I'd recommend people use their Merit for PMs earlier on however; as enticing as saving up might be, the increase in information is much more useful, and much more longlasting than a single use item.

The problem with the confirming of roles is of course the endless recursion.  The person who's confirming the role has to be proven to be a Lune, and the only way to do that is for another supposed Lune to confirm their role.  This early on, I don't know how useful the role confirmation is, since I don't think anyone is going to be particularly trusting of each other.  I'm not saying it isn't going to be more useful further down the line, but right now I wouldn't depend on it.  That all being said, El is right in that there's pretty much no reason for the Forsworn to actually lie about their role or (most of) their actions.  I can expect some Fabii's to not be totally honest about their vote switching for example.

And, Doc, I haven't made any PMs yet, though I have recieved some.  I intend to make some and hopefully co-ordinate better.  I'm willing to bet that by now the elims have already set up a group PM, given we've already been playing for a day.  Assuming they're less organised is a risk regardless of whether they actually have though; if we assume they're as organised as elims normally are, then we're better set up for dealing with them in the case they are.

The thing is, I could see that I don't need merit right now, so I could use it on PM's.  But I know that later, I'll want to have some form of protection.  And I know that that will be rather difficult to come by, even if I do get up to 20 merit.  Right now, I think I'll get maybe five, and if I get that little, I'll be wanting to save up for some protection.

Ideally, we could get a Lune to claim, have them find another Lune, and then lynch the first to hard-clear the second.  It's a rather tedious method, and involves lynching a potential villager, but it's the best way to hard-clear people.  I would not suggest this, however, partially because it involves killing a scanner, and partially because it makes the game less fun.  I think that for this game, we'll mostly have to be happy with getting role claims and a few Lune role finds, and have to deal with that how we may.  I like the direction that the Julii/ionBlade soft scanner is going.  I think it's probably the best idea for finding Elims, even if it does have some flaws.

Depending on how things go, I might send out one or two PM's next cycle.  If I feel like I have enough saved.

"Excellent, excellent!" Sanis beamed. This was the way. Get to know her. Find the chinks in her armor.

Sanis spotted Tenebrum and Jefry speaking a short distance away. Perfect. Their simple-minded cheerfulness could put this Nyanah at ease in a way that his false smiles obviously weren't.

"Ah! Tenebrum! Could that be you? It's been so long!" He started taking strides toward the pair, but he immediately stumbled over his own cloak, falling to the ground.

Someone had tied the ends of his cloak together! Sanis scowled darkly, looking around for the culprit. Seeing Nyanah, however, he quickly schooled his features into a foolish grin.

"Apologies for my clumsiness, esteemed lady," he said wryly. "Might I escort you over to meet with some friends of mine?"

"Um... I actually have to do something. Ah, talk to someone. Bye!" Nyanah said.

She hastily ran away from Sanis and found a secluded corner.

"You're sure we're on Nalthis?" Nyanah whispered.

YES, the Stormfather said.

"Is there a way for me to get more stormlight? I'm almost out from that lashing," Nyanah said.

NO, the Stormfather said.

"Storm it," Nyanah said.

STORM IT, the Stormfather agreed.

"Nice to meet you, sir. Enjoying the party?"

And then Danii noticed Shawl Man glaring at her, and it looked like he was about to clasp Tuxedo Man's hand just as I did. Whoops
"And who might you be, then?" he asked in an annoyed voice, "I don't think we've met,"
"My apologies, goodman. I'm Danii. And yes, I do believe we haven't met before."

Tuxedo Man (did he just say his name was Spartacus?) had been saying something in the while, so Danii turned back to face him.
She was about to ask him to repeat what he said when she saw his eyes narrow, just for a second, and then they were back to normal.
"I noticed you taking a glance at Sanis' cloak before you came over. I'm guessing you noticed that glow. Have you any idea what it was?" he asked.
Whoa. He was not supposed to spot the glow, and there was no way Danii was going to confirm that it was indeed a glow. So, she said, "Glow? In Sanis' cloak? I didn't see any, I was just inwardly laughing at his clumsiness. Maybe it was some trick of the light?" Danii would need to warn Nyanah to be wary of Tuxedo Man, this Spartacus...
She eyed him. He seemed the curious type. Maybe he would know something about the Healer...
No, not now. It would seem too suspicious. That was something Danii would ask him later, some other day.
She excused herself and wandered back to her drinking spot.

"Um... I actually have to do something. Ah, talk to someone. Bye!" And there went Nyanah, dashing off into the crowd.

Sanis stood and watched his evening's entertainment just... Run away. He struggled to contain his irritation. His rage.

He would find them. He would find them in the dark and wrap his slender fingers around their wretched necks and squeeze and squeeze and squeeze and...

No. Control. Control. There were too many observers. Tiberius would know. Sanis composed his features and took a few deep breaths. He could wait. He would wait.

But they would suffer for the insult they had paid him.

We don't need to hard-clear at the expense of a village life. If we get the Lune to scan an unclaimed and they give accurate info, it's probably safe

That's one of the reasons I said that I thought it was a bad idea.   I don't think lowering our number to make sure we have accurate info is a good idea.

"Now if you will excuse us, I think me and Tenebrum here should go get some food because i'm getting kind of hungry." The buffoon grabbed Tenebrum by the elbow and dragged her away.

Lucius sighed.  Sanis moved to quickly, as usual.  His reputation proceeded him, and flaunt it as he did, he would garner no friends tonight.  Lucius chuckled.  Well, he made no friends either.  His reputation came at a cost as well.  But it was worth it.  He was trusted, and he was known to be able to get jobs done.  That was one of the reasons that Tiberius valued him as much a he did.  That, and his house.  He brought skills to the table that others could not, but it was alliances that kept Tiberius' throne together.   Lucius looked over at Sanis.  He seemed frustrated.  Lucius sighed.  Best to keep an eye on Sanis, make sure no trouble got started in that quarter.  Lucius made his way towards Sanis, hoping that the the conversation could be kept to a minimum.

"Sanis."  Lucius adressed his fellow, warming his face slightly.  "I see you've lost your... entertainment.  I hope you don't mind my joining you?"

Not sure if I'll be back on before Rollover to respond to whatever you decide, Wonko.  I'll try, but I have somewhere to be.

A small girl suddenly appeared in front of Lumina. Tarna au Bellona, daughter of Tiberius, the most adorable little terror that had ever existed.

“Do you like flowers?” she asked cheerfully. “I do! I like saxifrage and poppy and forget-me-not an roses and daisies and…” she continued on, listing more flowers than Lumina would’ve ever expected a 7-year-old to know. She smiled slightly. A rare enough expression for her, but she liked children. Even when the child was usually up to no good…

Her instincts poked at her. She’d been deliberately walking through the center of the room and avoiding the edges. She wasn’t afraid to turn her back on anyone, she was saying. No one would dare stick a knife in her back. And so they didn’t.

That didn’t mean a little paranoia wasn’t healthy, however. And right now there was something at her back. There were a few others staring at her, and whatever was behind her.

She shifted slightly to the side, forcing Tarna to turn and face her, trying to catch a glimpse of what was behind her. Tarna kept babbling, enough that she couldn’t hear much else, but she thought she caught a mutter and a few fast footsteps. A smell reached her now. Something… rotting?

She still couldn’t see anything, though. Tarna was listing types of butterflies now. Lumina wasn’t entirely sure how that had happened, but she was just happy that she didn’t have to respond.

Her instincts became louder and louder until there was a touch at her back and she couldn’t bear it anymore. She whirled, drawing her sword (not her razor; it was too long, and she didn’t want to inadvertently duel someone until she knew what was going on) as she turned, and skewered a… something… with it, very nearly skewering an eyeball as well.

Tarna went silent as Lumina stared at the dead bird on her sword. She slowly lowered it, letting the carcass slip onto the ground, and gave the sword a flick. That will be fun to clean off later...

She inwardly winced, but sheathed the dirty sword and bowed low. “Hearth Knight Vesta. An honor.” Perhaps the woman had lost her wits as they said, but politeness didn’t hurt. Even when the famous Knight had been trying to stick a dead bird to Lumina’s back.

Sorry for taking so long to reply, everyone who was waiting. :P Game talk will come in a while.
