Then there are online boards where people are pretty helpful, if you are willing to dig through the answers yourself (I've used physicsforums.com for example). As, @zmunkz says, some sources will be gratis, however if you are contacting a commercial entity or sole practitioner, they may charge. Then again, if there is some prospect of positive promotional advantage, they may take the view that they are pleased to be associated with a project. Conversely, issues of professional confidence or commercial sensitivity may mean that you get nothing from them at all, paying or not.
