Mistborn movie posters/trailers

What's up guys?

Coming from the Stormlight thread,  where some of us fans got together and started crafting cool posters and trailers for potential Stormlight movies, how cool would it be to have one for mistborn as well?

One very large advantage for mistborn over Stormlight is that the first trilogy is actually finished,  so a movie trilogy is actually much more feasible than Stormlight.  We know what is going  to happen and how it ends.  And we don't have to split each book into three movies either,  heh.

Anyways,  while not as visually arresting as Stormlight (what with them actually using light)  mistborn still has an incredibly cool magic system, and all of us know how awesome and cinematic the fight scenes are (Kelsier vs inquisitior still gives me chills).  So go crazy and bring the world of mistborn to the screen!

My personal poster for mistborn.  Ash falling from the sky,  Kredik Shaw standing imposing and black,  with it thousand spikes.  In the foreground, the Lord Ruler watches over a thousand slaving skaa.  Tagline: What happens when the chosen one fails?

Go crazy!

Even though Vin is the main character of the series, to me Kelsier dominated Book 1. So mine would be a dark black/brown background with the Lord Ruler's shadowy outline dominating the back, with Kelsier facing his way, back to the poster, Inquisitor's spike in one hand and ash falling around him. Tagline: There's only one answer when ruled by an evil God: SURVIVE

So... I just saw the topic title and did a something. Then actually came in here and realized we were doing descriptions instead. Oh well. I'm sharing anyway. And just so you are aware... I went a little overboard. They aren't all the same ratio because oops, and they aren't all that great but I had fun and that's all that matters.

(I'm sorry. Something isn't working right. I didn't write the spoilers correctly and don't know how to edit them accurately. Once you get into the first spoiler tag you should see the other two. I didn't mean to nest them!)

yeah. Like I said, not super high quality but fun nonetheless.

I'm trying to think of a way to use silhouette and negative space to communicate something about these hypothetical movies.  Secret History, For instance, has the easy route of a close up of Kelsier in the Cognitive Realm, but instead of his face it's a view into the Physical Realm during some familiar scene.

Hrm... Maybe instead of a close up, it's Kelsier crouched down, brushing misty hair away from a misty face.  Through his silhouette, we can see his dead body, being held by someone, and through his hand, we can see a glowing point of light through a sweep of short black hair.  Tagline: There's always another secret.

Hm... If you want to use silhouettes, one could very easily do something cool for hero of ages. Ruin and preservation's colors are black and white, respectively. One could highlight vin and find a way to make the contours surrounding her imply something of ruin... Or draw something more symmetric, and then have a silhouette of Sazed in the middle... Or perhaps one could make use of the metallic symbols in the novels.

Right now I am working on a WoR trailer description so I don't have one for one of the mistborn novels... But trailer for The Well of Ascension totally needs to start with the line "I write these words in steel, for anything not set in metal cannot be trusted." If that was the opening for a trailer I saw in a theater...

Ash falls from the sky.  A city where people move with downcast heads and empty expressions while the nobles feast.

A young urchin girl in an alley,  dirty,  blackened.  Watching.

'When you're alone... No one can betray you.'

Flashes of her in the thieving crew,  her brother betraying her, camon viciously slapping her.

“I... I can make luck. I can influence people into becoming less angry.  Less dangerous”

Her inside a Tavern, camon about to hit her again.  She raising her hand as a silent pulse hits Camon.  He slows for an infinite moment, grows furious again and charges her.

BANG
The door bursts open and camon is flung across the room.

The girl,  looking up hesitantly. Kelsier extends a hand.

“Who are  you? What do you want with me?”

“You're a very special person,  Vin. You're Mistborn.”

Vin frowns. “What's a mistborn?”

Kelsier smiles.

A rapid fire sequence of shots as Kelsier dry voice speaks. Music picks up.

"Let's see."

“Steel pushing… Iron pulling”

Kelsier vaults across a room,  pieces of metal flying around him and slamming into hazekillers.  Metal flies towards Kelsier.

“Playing with emotions”

Emotional allomancy is portrayed as a half invisible wave passing  over a crowd. Breeze smiles as a room quiets down.  An inquisitor riots a crowd into an uproar.

“Enhanced senses… enhanced strength.”

Spook raises his head as he hears footsteps far away.  Ham takes down three guards with surprising  speed.

“To hide your allomancy... “

Mare,  weaving an intangible cloud around herself and Kelsier....

“And discover it.”

The cloud bursts.  Inquisitors arrive.

“Aaaand a bit extra ”

Kelsier holds up the Eleventh metal
“You've entered a whole new world,  Vin.”

BASS DROP

Leaping across rooftops. Vin laughs as she soars through the mists, cloak flapping.  Kelsier vaults into a hall, glass knife extended. Vin entering a ballroom,  gaping around her in wonder.  Elend looking up from a book. Kelsier shouting to a crowd of skaa,  scarred arms raised. Sazed smiling warmly at Vin. The crew training Vin to use her powers. Vin running from Inquisitors. Vin gaping  as skaa are bloodily executed in a square.  Kelsier screaming “SURVIVE!”

FADE TO BLACK

(like the one in the civil war trailer)

Vins’ voice. “You haven't told me.  What do you want me for?”

Ash falling. Kredik Shaw looming. The Lord Ruler watching  a slaughter of skaa,  draped in black and white. Twelve Steel Inquistors stand around him.

A firelit room. Kelsier gesturing at a blackboard with the steps from the book. He grins at Vin.

“Vin. How would you like to help overthrow a God King?”

Fade to Black

MISTBORN :THE FINAL EMPIRE
Kelsier’s voice.  “There's always another secret.”

This gave me goose bumps. Such a trailer would be so amazing!

Really nice, I like it. The only problem is that Mare was a Tineye, not a Smoker.

Wow, @Doctor12. You've thought about this. Reading it felt familiar somehow, as if that's exactly what my brain thought of for a trailer, too. I like how you sort of set up audiences for loving Kelsier. Mwahahaha. :D My only nitpicky problem is what @kenod pointed out - Mare's not a Smoker. You could substitute it for a shot of Clubs doing the same thing or the entire wood shop protected by a visual bubble thing. That doesn't give the same emotional tug as Mare and TLR but hey. It never occurred to me that each magic thing would need some kind of visual clue in a movie - like, duh, of course it does. I like the way you imagined copper for sure. Great job all y'all

For posters:

One of Kelsier in his mistcloak, Mists swirling around him while he Steelpushes into the air, and the words beneath read, "I am hope."

One of the Lord Ruler, possibly with his back to the camera if we want to keep his face a secret until the film comes out, two spears sticking out of him, with the caption, "There's always another secret."

And one of Vin, of course, but I couldn't figure out the right caption for her. :/

@mirahound
" When you're alone, no one can betray you"
"That's kind of what trust is, isn't it? A willful self-delusion." changed into "Trust is a willful self-delusion"
"The man who wants you to trust him is the one you must fear the most. "

For Rashek, how about something from Alendi's journal? To mislead the audience more? " I never wanted to be feared." or " It began with me." or " I am growing so very tired." or maybe " I must not take the power for myself. "

Oooh, I like the way you think! I'm thinking "It began with me." Has a lovely, ominous ring to it. :D

On the question of how burning metals actually looks like on screen. We could experiment with a variety of viewpoints through the movie. Like sometimes we see the actions happening from the eyes of the character, and other times see the action happening from outside.

Steelpushing and Ironpulling

By far the easiest to show, as they are physical movements actually happening. Just show a Mistborn hopping around and pushing metal around like Magneto in the movies. However, when from the perspective of a Mistborn. However, whenever we are in the perspective of a Mistborn, we can add the extra dimension of the blue lines, and when pushed or pull a pulse of blue energy races along the chosen line.

Tineyes and Pewterarms

Still mostly physical. Tineyes could be shown from outside reacting much faster to things and sounds, while Pewterarms are mostly a lot stronger. With careful choreography, we could make a normal guy take down several large guys at once. For Tineyes, we could get an extra dimension by exaggerating every sound when we're from the perspective of one. I'm imagining a revolving shot of Spook on a rooftop, as sounds just pile in until the watchers get a little disoriented.

Soothing and Rioting

Now these are tricky. Perhaps when we're in the perspective of a Mistborn, I suggest the half invisible waves of smoke trailing around the room, tugging gently, with colors corresponding to the emotional spectrum. Red smoke for anger, blue for hope, green for resolve, yellow for fear. (Yes, Green Lantern reference) From outside, there should be no visible clue other than the crowd seemingly all feeling the same thing at the same time.

Smoking and Seeking

Now these should be the trickiest to show onscreen. Seeking should be entirely from the perspective of Mistborn, hearing those faint rhythms. From the outside, there is no way to show this other than showing the seeker in question jerking towards the direction of a mistborn. Smoking is also entirely from the perspective of the Smoker, an intangible brown cloud surrounding him or an area.

Atium and MalatiumThis is actually kind of easy. For Atium, we use bullet time, and show the other person moving slowly, while his shadow moving faster, while the Mistborn can react in normal speed. to dodge the shadow. When both burn atium. a kaleidoscope of shadows just blur everything. For Malatium, and by extension gold, also everything slows down, and a misty image forms of the person's past or potential past. From the outside, however, it would just be the mistborn reacting abnormally well to everything

I don't really have a way for aluminum or duralumin as of yet, other than perhaps sudden, quick flares of light that perhaps show the reserves of metal emptying in a burst

What do you guys think?

But atium doesn't grant speed and shadows are not moving faster  The shadow is just preceding the other person's movements.

Yeah, I think I'd portray it sort of in bullet time still, but with both people moving at the same speed.  Just show the shadows branching out, and each of them eliminating and reacting to them (perhaps have one shadow begin to solidify as they move, merging with the person as the new shadows pop up?).  Might not need to go as slow as bullet time usually is, but it'd be really confusing for both of them to be full speed along with the shadows (not that it wouldn't be nice to include some fights like that too, or portions of them, but only after the mechanism of Atium has been explained).

After the audience had a chance to properly get a look at atium (like Kelsier explaining it to Vin) they can get full speed. And I think a fight in normal time with atium used could be just as cool or even cooler as in slow motion - imagine that insane shadows everywhere and Mistborn being basically a murderous blitz <3

I imagine you would have to use audio cues for Aluminum and Duralumin. Immediately associate a specific sound with each one and use the same sound every time it's used?

For the record, I have no experience with movie-making, so this might be completely crazy. ;)
