Bondsmiths

13 posts in this topic

Sorry if this question is already asked :P
We know there are three sprens which bond with someone to form a bond smith. One is Stormfather.
Who are the others?
I speculate one is cultivation - I know it is a shard, but I am thinking they would consider the shard as a powerful spren.

Not cultivation, but possibly the Nightwatcher.  I forget the name now, but the giant spren that Axies saw in the bay might have been bonded before the recreance.

Someone speculated that three bondsmith may be bonded with the Stormfather at the same time. Other like me think something like Stormfather, Nightwatcher and Cushiecs (probably I called it bad,the Spren from Axis PoV) or another Odium like Spren

the pocket companion says that three spren can bond to form bond smiths. I assumed one was cultivation because stormfather himself is the splinter of honor.

The JordanCon WoBs imply that there's some correlation between the number of Shards active on Roshar and number of Bondsmiths, and also notes that Cuciseh (Axies' spren) is more low-level than Nightwatcher and Stormfather. Right now, I'm more on board with the idea that Stormfather used to bond multiple Bondsmiths (if you can call two or three "multiple"), but who knows? Maybe there was one Bondsmith responsible for managing the Unmade... somehow.

Q: When it comes to the… epic-level spren on Roshar, like the Nightwatcher and Stormfather - is the number of epic-level spren equal to the number of Bondsmiths that you have on Roshar?

A: Hm, is the number of epic-level spren related to the number of Bondsmiths you have? Well, I’ve said there’s a maximum of three. And there are three Shards involved in Roshar. I’m not gonna tell you if that’s a coincidence or not. Sorry. [laughter]

Q: Talking about the Stormfather, are the Nightwatcher and the giant water spren, Cusicesh, are they on the same level?

A: The Nightwatcher, yes. Um...uh...there are...I would say, a level below the Stormfather and the Nightwatcher who are also a much bigger deal than something like one of the sapient spren, and that’s what Cusicesh is.

How can you both read the WoB and get from it something that's not there? Brandon basically RAFO'd whether there is a correlation or not.

The spren are all splinters of Honor, not just the Stormfather. Same way that all seons are splinters of Devotion and all skaze are splinters of Dominion.

Hm, you are right in that I might be reading more in that than it states. Too much tinfoil hat...  I do, however, still stand by my theory that Cuciseh is not involved with Bondsmiths.

The texts and WoBs indicate there's likely spren that are of Honor, Cultivation, Odium (the unmade), and Adolnasium it/himself. Not all Spren, or even all Radiant Spren, are of Honor.

In WoR, he refers to the bondsmith in chapter 44's prelude. The specific quote is

Their spren was understood to be specific, and to persuade them to grow to the magnitude of the other orders was seen as seditious

This use of the singular "was" leads me to believe they were all bonded to a single spren. This is further supported by the fact that encouraging them to grow was seen as seditious, and was therefore discouraged. I don't see why if one applied to Odium, the enemy, there would be concern over being seditious towards him

So...on Scadrial, we have two shards but three magic systems, one for each shard and one combo. What if we have the same thing on Roshar  in terms of the God-spren: one for Honor, one for Cultivation, and one combo? I'm not including any of Odium's spren, because Surgebinding is not his magic system. This would give us maximum of three Bondsmiths, with each having a different spren but none tied to Odium.

Yeah, I also think that there is Honor's godspren (Stormfather), Cultivation's godspren (probably Nightwatcher) and third which is a mix of both Shards... not just a mix, but something of their interaction (just like atium + lerasium is not the same as harmonium).

I wouldn't rule out possibility of third Bondsmith bonding something of Odium or partly of Odium if it weren't for the fact that there are Ten Unmade (and as we know, Unmade are Splinters of Odium), not one.

In fact... it's curious why there could only be maximum three Bondsmiths when it would be very natural to be ten of them as ten seems important to Roshar. Perhaps this is a clue that we have to look elsewhere... maybe three Shards, maybe two and their interaction, maybe two Shards' godspren and third godspren of Adonalsium (as we know that there were spren before Shards came and Invested in Roshar and that those spren were Splinters of Adonalsium).

The only problem with Bondsmith's Spren is about the Stormfather himself. He is our only knowed Bondsmith's Spren. But he is a special case in another Special case XD

I mean whaterver the Rider of the Storm (I still think the Rider of the Stom was an Adonalsium Spren) was, it was a pretty unique Spren... He merged with Tanavast's Shadow only after... Therefore we see a mutation of Bondsmith's Spren... It's hard to find a good pattern for others Bondsmith's Spren
