Are Forton's potions Invested?

37 posts in this topic

What about something like the medieval "doctrine of signatures"? Medieval herbalists believed that all plants were created for a purpose, and they would reveal that purpose with a "signature"--a clue hidden in their shape. So, liverworts have leaves shaped like livers, so they must be good for the liver.

In other words, maybe potion-makers look for naturally-occurring glyphs in their ingredients. For instance, maybe pistils represent circular Hrovell, and your magic system is based on the arrangement of petals, sepals, and stamens around the pistil.

Flower-based potion magic! I love it! :) ( Oh, and nice to see you again, ecohansen.)

As to the regional Investiture discussion started by ccstat, I've yet to collect my thoughts on the matter, but I'd probably post something on a separate thread about it.

Maybe the plants don't matter. Maybe it's simply where they're from. A rose or a weed from this one valley will have the same properties, or a potion made entirely from grass clippings from a thousand different spots in the land, in the right proportions... or maybe there are plants that only grow in certain places in Hrovell.

My money is on one special plant (or one fix set of plants) from a special place, in which you somehow symbolically "code" the wanted effect.

Something like:

- Plants: Effects

- Cooking method: Modificators to the effect

It may be after all

I typed up a rambling panic of a post.  Decided I'd condense it so it's not so far off topic:

Forton's potions are clearly not affected by distance like Forgery is.

What is it about Dakhor and Forton's potions (and thus the Jeskeri Mysteries?) that allow them to defy the distance problems of Sel?

It's a question of where it was activated, I'd wager.  Dakhor is "turned on", so to speak, during the initial rituals that implant the specific power within the bones of the practitioner.  I suspect that Forton's potions are that magic system that I think Brandon mentioned once where the potion in question needs to be frozen in order to have any effect, so therefore they'd be "turned on" at the point where the solution reached 0 Celsius.  In contrast, Aons are drawn and then "turned on" by Elantrians on the fly, so as we saw, Aons "turned on" in Elantris and environs have more power than those "turned on" in Teo.  (Re: the mysteries: I assume that Iadon's rituals weren't going to work even if he had the symbols right, because he wasn't in Duladel or whereever the Mysteries draw from)

Do you happen to have a link to where Brandon mentioned the freezing potions thing? It's not something I can recall ever seeing.

Unfortunately I do not.  Furthermore, it's in one of 3 places: it's either mentioned in passing in the Elantris annotations, it's in reference to a fan question about magic system inspiration, or its somewhere in the Writing Excuses playlist somewhere.  (I'm actually fairly certain it's not in the Writing excuses playlist, because the only episode of that I've seen is the one they did on tES before that came out)

EDIT: Found it.  Reddit AMA 2011, question 157, and it looks like it was only a hypothetical one.  Maybe he'll fold that particular bit of inspiration in once we actually go to Fjordell?

A little late to this thread, but I'd wager that something in his potion making resembles Svordish writing. It may be in the stirring patterns as others have noticed, but every magic system on Sel thus far is connected to the writing system of the local people.

  • Aons = AonDor
  • Fjordell = Dakhor bones
  • Jindonese = Chayshan forms
  • Maipon = Forging
  • Svordish(?) should then = invested potions in some way.

Great catch Skaa!

Thanks! Forton is from Hrovell, though, not Svorden.

I think the point was that Earth and Sel have different flora and fauna for the making of potions and stuff. They might even have elements that we don't have on Earth. Not to mention that it's been confirmed that they're invested.
