If you were an Epic?

Okay we get these what superpower questions all the time so let's go a bit more Steelheart on this.

1. What would your power/secondary power be?

2. What is your weakness?

3. What is your cheesy name?

4. In what way does your inevitable evil manifest itself (why do ordinary people really hate you?)

A description of your costume would be fun as well.

Ah, I've already posted it in prologue :) It was ignored there, so I'll just repost it here:

Power: My body is a 3D portal, perfectly controlled. (Not that I can make them, but that I am a portal, so no physical body to hurt). Normally it automatically maps to nearby matter to make me look human. Distance limits: solar system :) Can stretch and move, teleporting stuff whole or in pieces. Size limit: 10000 square meters. Senses are limited to the stuff passing through me and worldfeel (roughly speaking, relative position of my portal parts).

Vulnerabilities: Yes, I'll go with cliche on this one :P Love is a twisted, incomprehensible emotion :) Somebody in love with me passing through me will close/destroy that part of me.  After some limit, I die.

Flavour of evil: Benign :D I'd only kill/maim people who annoy me, stand in my way or accuse me of lying. I'd probably have little interest in actually ruling or subjugating them. I'd probably have some fun working with them against other Epics - not like they can refuse me :) I would probably kill of a baby or two per day - those are always annoying :)

Cheesy name: Gateway

Costume - none (no body to wear it on)

Nice. Particularly like the casual attitude towards death. very Epic of you.

Here's mine

1. I can alter the affects of forces on an individual. Essentially I can make down any direction for any person or object through physical contact. making it seem like I have super strength when in actual fact I just make people fall in bizarre directions. Secondary power (kind of) I can use this on myself to stand on vertical surfaces etc. Maybe some potential for pseudo flight - more investigation needed. Distance limited to within a mile of me.

2. Arrogance. My powers only work on people that I disdain. If you can gain any respect from me then you are immune to the direct impact of my powers. I can still chuck things at you though.

3. Not sure here; Plumbline and Dropshot are the two main contenders. I lean towards Plumbline because it describes better what I do but sounds quite close to Faultline.

4. I will often go on destructive rampages to try to seed chaos. I don't want to see leaders arise anywhere so I seek to keep everyone on the same level - a really bad one so that they are too busy fighting each other to come after me.

Costume: Black combat trousers and a dark green hoodie with a cape that doubles up as a custom made wing suit to aid my half flight.

1. Primary power: Light manipulation. Firing lasers, energy shields, personal invisiblity (with the limitation mentioned in the book, I need to keep my eyes visible if I wish to see anything). I can also, if I wish, simply project lights in any color. Technically I could project a light "picture" but it would NOT be a convincing illusion (more like, "the guy looked sorta like this only less blobby").

First secondary power: Hovering. Not useful for overland flight as it is slower than a walking pace, but I can lift gently off the ground and float across the room. I am able to lift my body and up to my own body weight in "stuff" though I'm limited by my own body's ability to hold things (so if something heavy were across my neck it wouldn't suddenly be weightless, it would still choke me).

Second secondary power:Self-reincarnation ("born from light," on the basis that I have the same secondary as someone similar to my primary power).

2. My light manipulation fails in the presence of a fly trapped in amber. I can't levitate near cats. My self-reincarnation doesn't work on Mondays.

3. That Light Which Reveals The Truth, or Light for short.

4. Messiah complex. I believe Epics are Gods and I am their king. I insist on the worship of those around me. I am FAIRLY magnanimous to the faithful. like Steelheart I try to provide an atmosphere where people may produce in relative safety if only so I can rule over a more prosperous land. Anyone who fails to convince me that he is a true believer is cut down with lasers.

Costume: Shaved head, long flowing robes (with the occasional light manipulation to make them look pristine white if I have to). A golden glow constantly shines down on my shoulders like the light of a halo. I always push the UV rays of sunlight away from me so my skin is creepily white and unlined.

1. Primary power: Superhuman speed and reflexes - I can move at speeds that are presumably less than the speed of light, but too close for any measurement device to tell the difference. Not just my body, but my mind is sped up as well, allowing me to read books at impossible rates, solve problems in record time, and give my punches incredible kinetic energy. Thankfully, Calamity protects me from pesky things like air friction and momentum when I'm using this power. First Secondary - The ability to create and manipulate fire. Blasts of flame, shapes of flame, make things explode, etc. Last Secondary - The ability to instantly sense other epics within about half a mile of myself, and more importantly, to instantly know the exact nature of their powers and weaknesses.

2. Temperatures below freezing inhibit my speed and ability to make fire- I can be imprisoned in ice. Also, any epic who wears an aluminum-foil hat will not be sensed by me. :P

3. I call myself The Blaze.

4. I get my fun by riding around at speed and causing chaos by melting or burning things.

Please don't take this the wrong way, McMill...

... I will gladly team up with other Epics who want to help me take down this meta-Epic. :D Heh heh... it's a matter of survival. You understand...

EDIT: To make it clear I don't mean it personally.

None taken Darn. I think it's reasonably balanced, personally, given it's a set of powers with no protection from usual harm (Reckoner with a sniper rilfe has an easy job), and the fact that 2/3 previously posted weaknesses (love and respect) are not things an Epic could reasonably expect to bring to the table against another epic.

Steelheart and Fortuity wouldn't be vulnerable, either, to continue the example.

McMill: How specific is this sense? If I'm invisible, can you use it to pinpoint me anyway?

Perhaps we could come to some manner of arrangement. At a minimum, I'd like to find some way to pay you to inform me what my own weaknesses actually are, since it seems even Epics don't necessarily know. And the whole "monday perma-death" thing isn't something I want to learn from trial-and-error.

You are correct, your lack of Prime Immortality is a compelling drawback to your character.

<spoiler>But as we've seen, simply knowing a weakness is about 90% of the work. Even if you, personally, aren't someone Fortuity would bone, once you know his weakness, hire an escort to slip him a roofie. And David guessed Steelheart's weakness about fifteen seconds before figuring out how to use it to kill him, despite not being able to directly utilize it himself.</spoiler>

For the other guys on this list, Getaway is... a bit odd, but Plumbline doesn't actually have Prime Immortality, so you needn't respect him to run up and kill him.

Minor thought... should we ever fight, it would amuse me to shoot you with a laser and to see, from your perspective, yourself be just not quite fast enough to outrun it since, as you say, you are just under lightspeed.

Haha... am I sensing a desire for an Epic RP? ;)

I think the sense would be distance based, with more information gleaned the closer Blaze got to another epic. At the edges of his range he would mainly know that there was an epic in a general direction; as they got closer he would begin to learn details of their powers, with full information known only on a touch for a certain minimum period of time, perhaps? To know the location of an invisible Epic, he would need to be fairly close to them already.

I was going for an effect kind of like Bronze in Mistborn. Of course, this bronze might need a copper to counter it.

Has anyone read the Just So Stories?  I am the cat who walks by himself, and all places are alike to me.

Basically, my power would be walking.  I can walk anywhere (through walls, in the air, on the moon).  Also, I am invulnerable while walking, and can walk indefinitely.

Vulnerability - my powers don't do a single thing if I'm running or standing still.  Also, treadmills don't count as walking because I'm not going anywhere.  Also, even though I can kind of teleport (I imagine it to be less like teleporting and more like walking a path shorter than a straight line), getting anywhere still takes some time, because I'm walking

Name:  Walker.  Possibly Strider, but that's already taken.  Kibeth would work as well, but I figure if I was an Epic I would be less concerned with making obscure references to Garth Nix books.

Costume - Traveling clothes, walking staff, and boots that are made for walking.

Brand of evil - I'm detached from emotion and humanity.  I see everyone and everything as beneath my notice.

Hehe, so much fun :) You people and the Reckoners are going to provide Gateway with *years* of entertainment.

Gateway, for one, would not hide his/its weakness. Let them try finding someone to honestly fall in love with something like me - I would just gate something heavy above such person, and forcefeed the resulting paste to the next of kin by gating it into their stomachs. :D I have nothing to fear from The Blaze, though I would be curious as to how/when he'd be able to feel me when my gates connect several places at once and I do not, strictly speaking, exist *in* the world - only on the border. Many fun experiments to look forward to!

And I would also be curious to see Walker walk in space, so into the pluto orbit he goes...

Light's arrogance seems like it would be an annoying kind though... He likes light? Sun is full of light...

But RP-wise, Gateway is far too overpowered, like lvl9999 guys in Disgaea. I like Disgaea, though... And OP characters, for some reason...

Haha... am I sensing a desire for an Epic RP? ;)

Eh, not really. If so, I for one would want to drastically re-vamp my character. Epics as a whole don't play well with others so it's hard to imagine it being anything other than either straight combat to the death, or a bunch of hardcore loners not interacting.

I can't hurt you, but you can't really hurt me either.  All places are alike to me - I'll just walk back.  It won't take significantly longer than usual.

Walker's power is pretty useless offensively anyways.  The best I could do is convince someone to walk with me, walk them someplace odd, and then leave them there.  Which is kind of like Gateway's technique, except I have to convince my victim to walk with me.

1) My power would be force field manipulation. I would be able to project force fields in any direction, including horizontally in line of sight. Force fields could be created in any color except red, but are normally invisible. Secondary powers would be a precognitive activation of a personal force field in the event of a threat, and energy disruption. The first would activate to protect me from attacks unconsciously and the later would disrupt any nearby energy source when activated. I would also be a gifter.

2) My weakness would be that I am unable to stop red light from passing through my force fields. Should someone target me with a laser consisting of red light they could kill me unless I disrupted it.

3) My name would be Field

4) I enjoy riding a horizontal force field around the city at around five feet off the ground. Should anyone over five feet in height who is in the way fail to bow or at least duck, the force field decapitates them. Should I encounter anyone who appears to be defiant, I surround them with force fields and push down until they are a properly subservient pile of meat leaking on the pavement. I do not discriminate. I require the subservience of all regardless of gender, age, religion, race, or any other pretext which one might think is significant enough to exempt them from paying homage to me. I may make exceptions in regards to some of my fellow Epics, but this is primarily because either they are useful to me, or more powerful than me.

Hmmm... with that attitude, you will struggle to attract an Honorspren for sure! :D

(you have basically descriibe a windrunner for your powers)

Anyway, for me...

Primary Power: Matter Manipulation. I can move and shape matter with my mind. (Think Magnito but with everything, not just metal)

Secondary Power(s): Precognition / super dexterity.

Weakness:  Vulnerability to organic / living creatures. I can't directly effect anything that is alive. (I can throw a wall at a truck, but I can't throw the person himself). Also my powers are negatied if I catch a common cold.

Cheesy Name: Mattinator

Evil Manifestatioin: I believe mine is the power of god, to change anything as I se fit. Therefore, I believ, basically that I am god and eberyone must worship me.

1) I would have no specific powers myself. However when any Epic uses their powers against me I steal their entire power set and they become human. I have their powers until they die. So I have to keep them locked up safe.

2) My weakness would correlate to the weakness of which ever Epic's powers I am using at that moment.

3) Name would either be: Reaver, Harvester or Downfall.

4) I would go into a psychotic rage when I go through drive-throughs and they get my order wrong. I would not be able to stop until every person in the building had been annihilated.

5) Costume: Normal clothes, except my underwear would be outside of my pants.

There seem to be an awful lot of meta-epics on this thread...

Well, who wants to be driven insane by the ability to grow flowers? Who wants to be weak enough that they would have to serve at the whim of a High Epic if they could simply choose to be a High Epic instead? Sure, it would be nice to have the ability to pick up a warm can of beer and chill it instantly, but then you'd end up running some High Epics refrigeration department instead of being able to do your own thing. You may as well just get a real job at that point and save yourself from becoming a sociopath.

I could be mistaken, but we seem to be miscommunicating. I'm going to take this opportunity to define the phrase "meta-Epic" to ensure we're all on the same page.

Meta-Epic means an Epic specifically designed to affect (in all of these cases, defeat in combat) other Epics. I have no problem with someone wanting to be powerful; my Epic idea was quite powerful himself, in a manner that, yes, would be useful in combat, he's just not built for the express purpose of taking down Epics. I'm simply surprised at how many people I see whose powers aren't simply powerful, they're clearly made with the idea in mind of defeating not an army or an earthquake but exclusively other Epics.

Ahh, yes, I misunderstood. In that case, my chosen epic abilities aren't designed in that particular fashion, though I did put in a defense against those sneaky buggers. To my knowledge, no such epics actually exist though so they get disqualified and we get to kill them as powerless humans with delusions of grandeur. :D
