Posted September 9, 2013 As an exercise in the ridiculous, my friend and I decided to see if we could think of some Shards who would make the world they Invested just unbearably awful. Here are a few of our suggestions, what does the audience think? Misery. Denial. Sarcasm. Clowns. Pranks. Paranoia. Irony. Boredom.
Posted September 10, 2013 The worst would be Clowns. <shudder/> Sarcasm wouldn't be too bad. I'd fit in fairly well. The intent of Boredom could be interesting. But yeah, please, no clowns. I can handle dragons, undead, demons, IRS agents, whatever, but please, please, no clowns.
Posted September 10, 2013 Could you imagine... "Bureaucracy", the middle management shard? The focus of the magic system would be filling out forms...
Posted September 11, 2013 (edited) Ahh. So that's what happened when dominion and devotion merged. You have to admit, Sel magic is basically a bunch of homework. Rap Music would be a pretty crappy shard. "Barely able to stand, Vasier burned his last Limerick to Invest in his Producer. 'One more time' he declared. And so the Last Rap Battle began." Posted September 14, 2013 What about a Shard of Taxation? In order to retain your powers you need to pay it a proportion of your income...
Posted September 14, 2013 What about annoyance? Honor, Odium, Ruin, Preservation, the rest of the shards and Adonalsium's opposite force would go to defeat it.
Posted September 16, 2013 Maybe the shard of storytelling, that gives you the powers of being a stereotypical fantasy hero and is fueled by saving damsels in distress (the good side) or trying to take over the world with some ridiculously over-the-top scheme (the bad side)
Posted September 16, 2013 Shard of Indifference Intent.-"Hey Shard, can we have powers?"-"Meh"
Posted September 16, 2013 Shard of Indifference Intent. -"Hey Shard, can we have powers?" -"Meh" So you only get powers if you don't want to use them? Now I want this to be canon.
Posted September 16, 2013 Shard of Indifference Intent. -"Hey Shard, can we have powers?" -"Meh" Or similarly the shard of apathy.
Posted September 17, 2013 Shard of inattentiveness.
Posted September 17, 2013 Or the Shard of Communism. You all get Magic rations and have to share them equally XD
Posted September 17, 2013 Or the Shard of Communism. You all get Magic rations and have to share them equally XD No, that would end up like Halandren. Everyone is given an equal share to start with (one Breath), but in the end it's all in the hands of the government.
Posted September 17, 2013 Shard of Pasta. chull an italian, I would approve of that
Posted September 17, 2013 The shard of procrastination, the longer you put off using your powers the stronger you would become. Then again it probably hasn't got round to creating people yet so that's not really much of an issue.
Posted September 17, 2013 (edited) Shard of Anime. In order to activate its magic you have to go through a long transformation sequence and loudly call your attack while striking cheesy poses. Shard of Plot-device Your power activates only when its needed in order for the plot to proceed causing maximum frustration to everyone. @king of nowhere: nice to see an other Italian! Posted September 17, 2013 Shard of Frustration. It gives you opportunities and then sets you up to fail. Could also be called the Shard of Passive-Aggressiveness.
Posted September 17, 2013 Shard of Non-Intervention. It creates cities of splinters in Shadesmar and gives them awesome powers, and doesn't let humans participate.
Posted September 17, 2013 Shard of PMS. Only gives powers to women, and they can only use it a few days a month. -
Posted September 17, 2013 Shard of Frustration. It gives you opportunities and then sets you up to fail. Could also be called the Shard of Passive-Aggressiveness. From a certain point of view that sounds too much like what happened with Kaladin. Until the end of Way of Kings at least.
Posted September 25, 2013 Shard of Trepidation. You only get invested when you're paralyzed with fear and can't do anything.Which is unfortunate, cause it's totally the strongest magic in the Cosmere.
Posted September 25, 2013 Shard of Mediocrity. You get power by being totally unremarkable in any way... Then lose that power immediately as you suddenly become exceptional.
Posted November 13, 2013 (edited) Bring this thread back! Got a new one:The Shard of Banking: It doesn't actually have any powers until you Invest into it Edit: ooh nice, 4 upvotes. Let's see if I can expand. So after you've Invested your Power into the Banking Shard, it will Squander your Investments into Risky Cosmere Loans.I knew I shouldn't of let Banking invest into Sel! Posted November 13, 2013 Humiliation. The more you're mocked, the stronger you are. Masters of the art would employ crowds of people to belittle them, and the weakest people would have good self-esteem and stable relationships with their peers. Saboteurs would send in ninjas to whisper compliments to people as they slept, and the best thing a friend could do for you would be to make you think you were truly useless.
