Favorite Magical Ability

22 posts in this topic

Hello everyone! Being new here, I was looking for some fun threads to contribute to. I expected to find something along the lines of favorite magic system, but unless I can't read, no one has done it before.

I want this to be more specific than "magic system". As Brandon has said before, it is not always clear how to define such. For example, any of the Metallic Arts could be defined as one magic system or 18, not including God Metal alloys. Magic system also (arguably) rules out Shardweilding. One could argue that the ability to talk to Seons is a magical ability, as it cannot be done without magic. Most of all, I think it will be more interesting to see what everyone's favorite specific facet of magic in Brandon's works is, and reveal a bit or personality.

Some pointers. I would prefer that you not say simply "Allomancy" for example, as it is a collection of a lot of different powers that are most often possessed only individually. Instead, put down "Burning aluminum", and everyone should do this because it is the best Allomantic power and you know it. ;) Same applies to the other Metallic Arts, Surgebinding as well. (But AonDor would be fine.)

Since this is a power, not a system, Compounding Allomancy and Feruchemy or some Twinborn combination would be allowed. As would Shardbearing.

Please state the ability and tell your reason.

So what it has really become in spirit is "If you could have any magical ability from Brandon's word, what would it be?" Most of you will probably ignore my guidelines, but that's ok. :)

To start us off, I would go with Shardbearing. It would just be so cool to be able to summon my sword into my hands, and Shardbearers are nearly invincible against other humans. Also, your sword is just undoubtedly awesome.

Edit: Of course I find the power thread NOW, after making my own... I didn't think to look in Cosmere Theories...

If I had to pick something from Scadrial, I'd probably say pewter compounding because you would be VERY hard to defeat. But I would also love Shardwielding

You might want to throw being a pewter savant and being koloss-blooded in there for good measure. Maximum physical capacity!

Or a Koloss-blooded pewter savant compounder with a special ability or Hemallurgically-given gold compounder=Invincible

Yes,well, that's if you can't be a Koloss-blooded, Feruchemist/Mistborn Full Surgebinder Elantrian with shardplate and an Honorblade with unlimited Breath. :D

God-like power as a top-level gestalt of every magic system just doesn't interest me.

I think tapping mental speed is probably the coolest power in the Cosmere. Looking at Brandon-verse at large, Alcatraz' talent for breaking things is reasonably amazing, as well.

I'm not terribly keen on Compounding as a concept, but since I wouldn't enjoy storing mental speed, I'ma have to go with Zinc Compounding for constant superthoughts.

Why don't you like compounding as a concept? just too OP?

Pewter burner and speed storing would be nice. When ever you burn pewter you could store speed to be about normal speed for awesome speed storing. The big balance with being a fering is that for a cool bonus storing sucks, being able to store like all the time and not lose your speed is awesome.

Then, when you arent storing and you use that speed boost on top of your pewter boost, you'd be crazy fast really strong.

Also, since that other topic was in cosmere, this is different, since it could include Rithmatist and the rest of the non-cosmere ones.

Compounding kinda makes free energy. I take issue with the whole "tenfold output" portion of it. Just getting to burn a metal to get the benefit of a tap without spending the time to store would be strong enough.

Honestly I like Full Feruchemy and Full Allomancy together. Not even to compound, just because I like the way they fit together, especially the way Feruchemical iron fits with Allomantic steel and Allomantic iron, or (as you have observed) the way Allomantic pewter lets you skim health, speed and strength off the top with Feruchemical pewter, Feruchemical steel and Feruchemical gold so you can store without loss. And I totally think there's something that can be done with Feruchemical aluminum and Allomantic gold as I've rambled about previously. I find Feruchemy and Allomancy fit so well together, that even with full access to one of them, I'd still feel like I had an incomplete set of powers. Again, I emphasise, this is not because of compounding, but just the non-compounding ways they interact.

yeah, I completely agree, even if compounding was not a thing at all, having both would feel like having the complete set. Kind of like how spook complained that just tin or just pewter are an incomplete set, having both is just fuller.

In all seriousness I would love the windrunner surges but we still haven't seen what the other surges can do yet so can't decice :)

Hooboy, tough one.

My gut feeling is to go with AonDor. It's the first Brandon magic system I learned about, so it kind of has a special place in my heart - but its almost scholarly aspect appeals to me very much. Plus, drawing glowing lines of pure power in the air is awesome, and you know it. I guess I also like it because, similarly to Awakening (which would probably be my second choice), it's very very versatile - not that the others are not, but there aren't very many things you can do with Steelpushing, for example...

Obviously I would need to know all of the Stormlight surges before I can dismiss them, but I think most of them will end up suffering from those... limitations... the different Allomantic or Feruchemical metals suffer from. Soulcasting is obviously more versatile than, say, burning gold, but's still no AonDor.

i like the idea of an Electrum-Twinborn, partly just to be different, but I also really like the idea of never being depressed, and seeing the future in just plain awesome.

Barring that...shardblades are the coolest thing ever, but not particularly useful in real life. (Though I would have a hoot every time I go through airport security knowing they could never actually disarm me.) How about Axies' ability to change his body? Sounds pretty handy to me.

AonDor is definitely the broadest, but it's also pretty fiddly. I'd have to pick between either pewter because I like the idea of generally vastly improved physical capabilties, and Soulcasting, because making things from arbitrary other things is extremely nice.

Soulcast. The power of creation this one sure looks handy.

Now, if only I could soulcast a pizza form the thin air that would be nice=)

I think you'll have to Soulcast the ingredients separately... Which takes a lot of the fun away.

I don't know...I bet pizza is powerful Cognitive aspect prevalent throughout the Cosmere, so the air would know exactly what to turn into.

The same is probably true of bacon...What else did you think the Sinew essence comes out as by default?
