How did Joel's father discover the lines of silencing?

I've always assumed that he got it through deep theoretical considerations that we really aren't privy to in the books.

It's strongly suggested that there is more advanced theory that neither Joel nor the readers are far enough along to understand.

He snuck into the Tower of Nebrask, got possessed by a Charcoal stick figure. Woke up several years later with a very angry Rithmatist standing over him amidst the debris of a chalk battle. After that he had a disturbing obsession with the pattern for silencing, but didn't know how it was used. Then he decided to settle down, get a girl pregnant, make lots of chalk and fill his son's mind with rithmatic formulae. And that folks, is the honest truth right out of the horse's mouth.

EDIT: the horse was lying by the way, so don't trust him.

What if Joel's dad was a rithmatist and he was really good, so the forgotten had him killed, and Joel actually was a rithmatist from the beginning, but his mom didn't want him to be one, so she talked to the priest and had it set up where he would live a normal live

But Joel's dad wasn't, because he wouldn't have needed other rithmatists to try out his theories, and if his mom didn't want him to be, then he would've gotten it in the second try. Right?
