Cosmere City: Saga I: The Timekeeper

Recommended Posts

Ven struggled against the rope, trying in vain to break it. No, hurry up, he told himself. Then he saw a man in a mistcoat, fall towards him. Uh no.

Charden smashed him against the wall, pulling out a knife and holding it to his throat. Soldiers poured into the alleyway, capturing the unamed girl, the other girl who had just showed up, the thief, the Radiant. Ven started to black out. The last thing he saw was a truck they were throwing him into.

So. . . Saedy's POV doesn't really fit in to get her in with the group, but I had fun writing it, do I put it in. Fable's was different originally, I had to edit it A LOT for newer posts. (guess that's what I get for goin without wifi for two days <_<)

Saedy:

Saedy whimpered as figures fought outside her window.

"Shh," whispered her mother. It'll be fine." Saedy looked up at her mother's face. No, neither of them believed that, but they would pretend for each other's sake.

"Why do they have to be in our back alley? Why not somewhere else?" Saedy already knew the answer, but she asked anyway. Anything to keep away the memories that attacked her.

"People like that, just hate each other." Murmured Mother," They don't care whom they hurt, as long as they can just kill each other."

"There are some who try to protect others. You know they exist." Saedy's voice got quieter. "Father was one."

"Yes." Saedy's mother smiled sadly. "He was. We were lucky to have him."

Talking hadn't helped. Saedy shuddered as memories came like a flood.

Fires in the night. A hurried run from the caravan. Her father fighting off the bandits, then falling to them.

Being forced to leave her sister behind, as she died from an arrow meant for Saedy.

Tin flaring, Saedy asked, "You don't think they'll come in here do you?"

"No," answered Mother, as someone yelled about journey before destination,"I don't think so . Extinguish your tin, and sleep now Saedy."

Saedy's eyelids were already heavy, when she quenched her allomancy, and dozed off.

Fable:

Fable unclenched with her large eyes--her mother had been half Shin-- when she heard a grunt and a thud. She looked down and saw that the rope had hit him.

It worked. she thought. "Storming colors, it actually worked!" Her hair darkened to golden; her eyes started fading back to green. Laughing, she hopped up. . . then she looked down again.

He was still conscious.

Should she, um, finish him off? No she couldn't do that! Or could she? All it would take was the simple command of 'choke him' to that rope. It would be easy. You're being stupid Lai, Funny, after all this time and all these identities, she still thought of herself as Laila. That spindly little girl that sat in her room and read books. You know you can't do it. You wouldn't be able to kill him.

A gasp came from the alleyway entrance. Fable tore her gaze away from the struggling man. A figure stood there. It was a woman? Or maybe a girl. . . It was so dark in this alley. My mother had tin for allomancy. Why couldn't I have gotten that?

"Hello?" she called. A few of her hairs went brown with nervousness. "Who are --"

Fable never got to finish her sentence.

A figure in gray descended down from the sky, and landed on the man. Soldiers swarmed around the alley. "Hands on your head!" One of them bellowed.

Fable didn't try to stop them, when they tied here up. Her hair was gray. Emotionless. She was too stunned from the night's adventures, to feel anything.

Mist

Mist stood, frozen. Why did I even decide to come down this alleyway? she wondered helplessly. "Hello?" She heard the girl say. "Who are-"

Someone fell from the sky, landing on the prostrate form. "Hands on your head!" someone yelled, and policemen- soldiers?- poured into the alley. Mist commanded her limbs to move, and somehow she got them up above her head. Oh no. This was bad, this was really, really bad. Mist had only been arrested once before, and that was her brother's fault. She'd been released as soon as they realized their mistake.

But this? She was in an alley with two very suspicious looking people. She'd have to be questioned, she'd- would she need an alibi? She didn't know. She was panicking, her heart rate rising, taking quick, shallow breaths. You're hyperventilating, she thought. Calm down. Deep breaths...

Someone tied her hands together behind her back. She thought someone might be reading her rights. It was hard to tell, with all the sounds and the sirens and the yells.

Mist wished she could get out her chocolate. That was her last thought before a very loud noise sounded by her ear and she passed out.

Turos stared down the Knight Radiant, who returned his gazed. He recognized that massive black and red blade.

"You just had to show up here, didn't you." Turos muttered.

Rend nodded. "You could say that. Obedience, after."

"Are we really going to do this?"

Rend smirked, drawing the shardblade out of the concrete and hefting it over his shoulder. "That's your call, traitor. Here and now or there and then. I'll let you decide. It's going to happen either way, but I let you choose whether this city suffers casualties in the process."

Turos spat. "Hugh, get out here already."

A voice yelped from a nearby window. Sounds of muffled footsteps were followed by the door of an office building opening. A fat man trudge out quickly, his suit buttons threatening to pop off with each hurried step. He visibly lost at least two hundred pounds as he approached Turos. "How did you know it was me?" Hugh asked breathlessly. "I went through shards know how much trouble to perfect my disguise, and it didn't even matter, did it?"

Turos nodded at the dustbringer. "We can talk later. Now we need to deal with priorities."

Hugh sniffed. "I'll miss these Jindoeese buffets. Nobody else has quite the right spice in their cuisine."

"You'll get over it. Now get us out of here."

The two of them approached Rend, who frowned. "Too bad. This city could use some shaking up."

A thin, silvery shardblade formed in Hugh's outstretched hand. "It has been too long since I have said the words." He raised it and pointed it to the side. "I will endure all opposition. I will create a better tomorrow." His eyes glowed with violet light as he breathed in colored mist that flowed from one of his pockets. With both hands, he gripped the shardblade and carved a large circle in the air. Streams of light followed the motion of the blade and a portal formed within.

Rend motioned for Turos and Hugh to enter first. After they went through, he turned and looked at the fallen indivudual he had attacked at first. "You're safe. This time." He turned and entered and the portal collapsed.

Sorry this took so long. the first time I typed this out, my iPod died before I could post.

Fable:

Fable started awake and sat up, eyes darting around the inside of the van. The guard--a hard woman with an angular face--glared at her with suspicious dark eyes.

Looking out the window Fable saw that the sky was gray with approaching dawn. What had happened last night? The last thing she remembered was having an emotionless fit. She must have blacked out.

Wait. Am I still in one? She checked her hair. It was brown streaked white at the moment. Fear and sadness, not the two best colors, but better than gray. As she ran her hand through her bangs, her fingers brushed against a headband. They'd left her metalmind! It wasn't all that surprising, now that she thought of it. The headband was made to looked unassuming, wrapped in cloth, then "frayed" around the ends, so that they touched the skin behind her ears.

They hadn't missed anything else when they searched her. Her bracelet was gone and so was all the items in her countless pockets. You could never have too many pockets.

"On your feet, kid," drawled the guard, "Move it." Fable stood up and began walking in the direction the guard gestured. What ever it was they wanted of her, she got the feeling she better cooperate, if she wanted to remain unhurt.

-=-=-

Fable tripped into the cell, as a jailer slammed the door shut behind her. She stared around the bleak room. Everyone from last night was in here. She tiredly walked over and sat down on a bench next to the blond girl.

"I suppose we never finished our introductions last night," Fable smiled wryly, " Who are you?"

Saedy:

Saedy handed a piece of fruit to a tall, blue eyed man with white hair. He smiled and gave her a diamond mark in return.

"Mother," she called, walking into the house behind their fruit stand, "we just sold our last fruit." It had been a surprisingly quick day for business. only 9:00 in the morning, and they were already sold out.

"I'm over here, sweetie." Coming over, Saedy saw that Mother was holding a small wooden box.

"What's in it?"

Mother drew a dagger out of the box, and handed to Saedy. "I want you to keep this with you at all times."

Saedy carefully fingered the blade. "Glass?"

"Yes. I want you to be safe, Saedy. Last night, one of the men behind our house was an allomancer. You need to be able to protect yourself."

"But some people will have guns. And I don't know how to use it."

"I can teach you. And not everyone has guns; most people prefer older weapons around here."

"You know how?"

"I wasn't always a merchant. Do you want to learn?"

Saedy nodded.

I'm back!

Lorn:

Reo Prison?

Lorn looked over from atop . There were bloody policeman everywhere. The whole place was a nest of vipers, thieves and murderers. And those were just the ones standing outside the cells.

Luckily, there didn't seem to be any Mistings around. Unless there was a smoker or Mistborn somewhere, in which case Lorn was in trouble.

He found a wall with a loose brick on the outside that he could use as a foothold. The outside of the wall wasn't built nearly as well as the inside. After all, who would want to break into a prison?

For that matter, why would he want to break into a prison?

He managed to get into the courtyard relatively easily, and dodge the patrol. All it took to take the back door guard out was a quick jab to the solar plexus to knock his breath away and a swift uppercut to knock him out. He laid the person on the ground (it wouldn't be any good if someone heard him fall) and stole the keys from the mans key-ring. He unlocked the door, put the keys in his boot, and walked in.

He turned a corner, then another. As he went deeper into the labyrinthine maze, frequently dodging others, he realized something.

Someone was following him.

He was making virtually no noise, which left only one way he could be tracked. He turned off his bronze. Immediately, the footsteps behind him started running, abandoning all attempt at concealment. Lorn raced too, suddenly realizing that turning off his bronze, alerting his tracker to the fact that he knew he was there, probably wasn't a good idea.

He saw a door. Quickly, he opened it, dashed inside, and carefully shut the door behind him so as not to make any noise. It was an iron door, too, which would prevent the metal on him getting detected.

He turned around, nearly walking the 30 stunned guards behind him.

"Oh hell" he breathed.

Aaaaand Mist is back, ladies and gentlemen!

Mist sat on the bench, watching nothing. She was filling a zincmind- though they had taken her bangles, they hadn't found the ring in her pocket. That or they'd deemed it harmless- it was thin and small, barely anything at all. Still, it made Mist feel better to have a full metalmind. They had taken her coat, though. She was not happy about that.

Mist heard a door open, and through her syrup- thick thoughts she pieced together that she should probably stop filling zinc. A moment later, her thoughts returned to normal speed and a girl was shoved into the cell with her. No; the girl, the one from the alley. Mist idly wondered why they weren't in the same cell to begin with as the girl sat down beside her.

"I suppose we never finished our introductions last night. Who are you?"

Mist shook her head, clearing the last vestiges of syrupy slowness from her mind. "I'm- well, um, I'm Mist. I sort of stumbled in on you in that alleyway last night." She gave a half-smile and fidgeted on the bench. "And you are?"

Fable bit the inside of her mouth while she thought. It was stupid, of course the girl, or "Mist" as she called her self, would ask for her name. But which one to give?

Which one?

Which one. . .

Which one. . . .

Fable cocked her head to decide as she made the decision. "Call me Saga."

She quickly glanced around and her hair became an irritated red as her eyes found that man. A small part of her knew she was being irrational, but she still blamed him. If he hadn't been a criminal than she wouldn't have been stuck in here for petty-theft-that-wasn't-really-theft. She would have only gotten a warning at her age.

Fable, or Saga as she should now call herself, focused back on Mist. She looked different.

"Weren't you wearing a jacket before?"

Why would they leave mine and not hers?

"Weren't you wearing a jacket before?" the girl, apparently called Saga (though it had taken her a little too long to come up with her name in Mist's opinion), asked after a pause. Mist looked back down at her absence of coat and sighed.

"Yeah, they took it. It was a really nice coat, too. And it had my chocolate in it. And my hats. And my metals..." Then she winced. She was really bad at keeping this whole allomancy thing a secret.

"Well, anyway," she said, eyes flicking up to Saga's ever-changing hair, "Are you by any chance... um... Idrian?" She hoped she had the pronunciation right. That was the country with the Royal Locks, right? Wasn't that for, well, royalty? Was she sitting in a cell with a member of the Idrian royal family? Mist might die of embarrassment. She hopes it's something else that makes Saga's hair change, though she wouldn't be able to fathom what.

"I am Idrian, but that's not why I have the hair. Gift from the Nightwatcher . . . It's complicated."

Saga didn't like remembering the day her fate had changed. One of Endowment's children? the Nightwatcher had mused, Then why don't we give you something fitting?

Saga fidgeted. "I couldn't stay in Roshar, though." Her hair becoming a wistful brown, "They do their whole system by eye color. That wouldn't work out for me."

"I've never been to Roshar," Mist says, suddenly interested in Saga. "So they really do things by eye color. Weird. I'm not sure how I'd fare, I mean, people say my eyes are everything from brown to green to a muddy sort of blue. Is is really as extreme as they say? Roshar, I mean." At this point she stands up and starts gesturing wildly. "It seems to be, from what I've heard- I mean, the strict social classes, the highstorms, the religion, dress code- is it true about the, the, is it safehands? That's what they call it, right- or is that all just the one country? I remember hearing about a place, Shinovar, that was more like- but then-" Mist's face fell suddenly. "I did it again, didn't I," she said with a weak laugh. She plopped back down next to Saga.

Saga raised an eyebrow as her lips tugged up at the corners. She wasn't quite sure what to think of Mist, but she seemed okay.

"Yes. Highstorms are as powerful as a category 5 hurricane, plus the investiture of the stormlight. They hit the land about once a week. It is considered extremely immodest for a woman to have her left hand uncovered in vorin society. If your eyes are dark, you are a peasant. But the vorin culture isn't the only one. There's so much diversity on that one continent!" Saga's eyes were shining now. She loved traveling and seeing all the different people. Part of being a merchant's daughter, she guessed.

To bad she had spent too much of her childhood locked up in a palace.

"Oh listen to me." Saga laughed "I sound like a travel brochure.

You mentioned being an allomancer. Would you happen to be from Scadrial then?"

"Thank you, for, for the information," Mist says with an unsteady sort of laugh. "And yeah, I'm mostly Scadrian. I remember something about my mother being part Sel- Selish? Is that what you call it?-, but I wouldn't know. My dad was born and raised on Scadrial, I think. I don't really know. My family's a bit complicated." Mist gives another halfhearted laugh. "Are they ever going to question us or something?"

Maltaan had always considered herself a realistic woman. But for her own husband to get himself drunk and get hit by a car, had been something she had never expected.

That was three years ago.

Happy anniversary, sweetie. She thought, as she rubbed her wedding pendant.

Maltaan's mobile buzzed. She picked it up.

"Yes, Sir . . . Of course, Sir . . . Right away, Sir."

Striding through the hall to their cell, Maltaan didn't let herself dwell on the past. She had a job to do.

14 . . . 15 . . . 16 . . . Here it is. She swung open the door. The girl she had escorted in the van was there, but she only needed the other one.

"You there," Maltaan pointed at the girl with blond hair, the one that didn't change colors. "Come with me. There's a few questions we need you to answer."
