Sunbird
I have some duck photos to share Duck 1, bathtime: Spoiler (Yes, that's a bird, not just a splash where someone threw a rock in ) Duck 2, which I found really interesting because it's complete inky black: Spoiler In this third photo, you can see the duck's nictitating membrane or "third eyelid," which protects birds' eyeballs from flying debris or harsh wind while still allowing them to see. A pair of Mallards: Spoiler Female on the left, male on the right. Red-breasted Merganser, female (also a type of duck even though "duck" isn't part of the species name): Spoiler

StrikerEZ
On the topic of reading in class, I remember that in elementary school, I'd read books all the time instead of paying attention in class or actually do the assignments. I remember one time in fourth grade, my teacher came over and had to take my book because I was reading it too much. She even emailed my parents about it, saying she felt bad for having to punish me for reading. I eventually (mostly) stopped this habit in middle school, and definitely by high school.

Thanks! Oh, also re: the whole reading in class thing? I used to do that all the time in elementary. In fact, my 2nd grade teacher, at the end of the year, gave me the So-Absorbed-In-A-Book-The-Teacher-Had-To-Shout-To-Get-My-Attention award.
StrikerEZ
Oh, I forgot to post this yesterday because I was so tired, but mini band camp started yesterday. Pretty much, it goes from 9 in the morning to 3 in the afternoon (with about a 45 minute lunch break) of almost non-stop marching and/or playing. It's so fun, even though it's rough, especially because I haven't done anything this physically active since the end of last year's marching season (around mid-November). Also, we got to hear the music (midi version) of our ENTIRE show for this year. That almost never happens. We also got the music for the entire show as well. We usually only get the opener and the ballad (first and second movements, respectively), and then when we get to summer band in August, the ballad usually has some revisions and then we get the closer. I can't believe we already have the entire show basically, even though the closer is likely to be a little different come August. I am kind of sad I didn't make drum major or even any leadership position, but I just gotta prove myself this year, and hopefully make it next year, my senior year.

Aww, I only got the So-Absorbed-In-A-Book-The-Teacher-Banned-Me-From-Reading-In-Class-Due-To-The-Difficulty-Of-Returning-Me-To-Reality award. It started with snapping (of the fingers), escalated to shaking (my physical manifestation), and ended with banning (me from books). ... I'm still proud of it, actually.

It's easier to pretend you're still paying attention. Especially when hidden behind a stand during band practice

Especially when hidden behind a stand during band practice I've never been able to do that because I can't focus on the reading or whatever it is I'm doing on the stand and still play at the same time. Plus, it kind of bothers me, because that's the time when you're supposed to be rehearsing, you can text or Snapchat later. (Not directed towards you, that's me complaining about one of my section leaders who sits next to me in band class-she's a good leader, but she does stuff like that a lot) Also, what instrument do you play? I play bass clarinet.

Oh, we do auditions for the middle school band directors near the end of 5th grade, and they try us out on a few different instruments and pick which one they think we sounded the best on. Mr. Nelson, my former middle school director (he retired after my 6th grade year) put my on clarinet. I'm glad he did, because I really like bass clarinet, now that I've switched to it. Though, it sucks that I have to go back to regular clarinet for marching season.

My senior year in high school, we had our bassoonist sit in a chair on the front sideline and play a solo in our 4th movement.

Though, I'm pretty sure I won't have to march bass clarinet. My band director specifically told me that he doesn't want to march basses, as they're really hard to take care of when marching them, marching bass clarinets are usually pretty crappy models anyway, and you can barely even hear them on the field, unless they're mic'd up.

Well, our bassoonist didn't do any actual bassoon-marching either. He usually played a different instrument during marching season (although I can't for the life of me remember which one) and just swapped over to bassoon for that one part of the show. 1 minute ago, Shqueeves said: My orchestra teacher wanted to do a marching orchestra at some point. StrikerEZ
Today was our last day of mini band camp! Today was the worst, physically, because now I'm soooooo sore. Like, everything hurts. But it was so fun. At the end, we ran through all three movements of our show. Of course, we weren't going anywhere near full tempo, but it was still cool to hear what it sounded like played by actual instruments, not computer versions. I'm so excited for summer band come August.
