Shard Holders

10 posts in this topic

Hey, i was just brainstorming about different connections and stuff when i thought of how in stormlight archive, the voidspren/odium were/was able to control the parshendi. I thought that this in a way might be related to ruin and how he could control (or influence greatly) anyone with a metal spike piercing them. I am just looking for thoughts and explanations on this topic, i like to know what people think.

Another thing would be, if the 'evil' shardholders could control people/parshendi whom use the power that correlates to them, ex; voidspren and metallurgy. Why can't the opposite, or good shardholders do the same? I know that things like, "oh they are the good guys and wouldn't do that" would be a common response, but in the books, wouldn't it just be so much easier if Vin could at least hear preservation like she could ruin?

These are just things that i wanted to say and see what people thought about them.

Go ahead and post new questions if they kind of relate to this topic, i just want to learn more stuff and see what peoples opinions are.

I like your thought about Odium controlling the Parshendi.  It is at least a little bit different than how Ruin controlled the inquisitors, though.  We're not completely sure what the Unmade are, but we know that they have something to do with what is happening to the Parshendi.

Preservation has the ability to hear peoples' thoughts, but he can't talk to them.  Ruin has the opposite.  That's why Sazed can do both.

As far as other good shards controlling people:

The shardholders on Sel are both dead.

Harmony's nature compels him to give everyone a chance.  That includes the bad guys.  Harmony isn't actually a good shard.  It's a neutral shard, being held by a really good guy.

Cultivation and Endowment (growing and giving) both have intents that don't really go with controlling people's bodies.

My answer sounds like "they are the good guys and wouldn't do that" but what I mean is "they hold shards that can't do that."  Over time, the shard's intent influences the mind of the shardholder.  That's why Preservation couldn't attack Ruin.  And that's why Sazed can't grab Wax by the brain and force him to win every fight.  Once Sazed has held Harmony for a few thousand years, I don't think he will even be able to help the good guys in little ways.

Okay thank you, that makes a lot of sense, especially with how preservation could not talk to Elend or Vin, and how all of the steel writings said that only thoughts were safe.

Another question i kind of want an answer too, or at least thoughts on (even though it doesnt deal with this topic) is at the end of stormlight archive, why is there a sword that is almost a spitting image of nightblood from warbreaker? Is this supposed to be a connection that has nightblood in both books, or is it just another sword that is very similar?

It is Nightblood and you should take a closer look at Zahel :)

He's a master swordsman, he makes a reference about flowers, has life recognition and misses voice in his head.

How do you make the spoiler thing?, also does that mean Zahel is Vasher?

This is how you tag spoilers, by the way. I'm going to replace the word "spoiler" with "spren" in this example, so that the syntax doesn't actually create a spoiler tag.

Begin spoiler this way:

[spren]

Write your spoilers here and don't forget to use the normal brackets. They make a difference!

[/spren]

And you end the spoiler just the same way, but with the slash.

By the way, he was actually in the first draft of The Way of Kings by his original name, but then Brandon decided to move him and have him go by a pseudonym.*

He is Vasher. Ahhh the inter-connected universe that we know of as the Cosmere!

Do you know about Worldhoppers? If not, give them a gander!

On a side note, guys, maybe this topic should be moved away from the "Introduce Yourself" thread? Too spoilery, and talking quite a bit about things that maybe some new members haven't thought about or read yet!

Another reason that the good Shardholders may not be able to do this is that they simply don't BELIEVE that they can. If preservation, when he took on the shard of preservation believed that preservation shouldn't control people, then he literally couldn't do so.

But when Vin took on preservation, if she believed that she should be able to control all people like she could the koloss and the kandra, then she probably could have. Also Sazed, as Harmony has decided that all men must choose for themselves whom to believe in and will not force them to believe in him even though he literally IS a god and he has enough knowledge and power to make them believe in him

This topic has been moved, because it's a Cosmere (cross-world) discussion, and so it should be in a Cosmere forum. Thanks!
