Beetles have gemhearts!

"What is it?" Her voice was like a whisper. "You can show me. I won't tell anyone. Is it a treasure? Have you cut off a piece of the night's cloak and tucked it away? Is it the heart of a beetle, so tiny yet powerful?"

While Syl was in her childlike state and may have just been saying things, part of me wonders if this is a clue. The larger animals with exoskeletons have gemhearts, why not the small ones? It would make sense if insects had gemhearts - they would just be too small to be worth harvesting. Indeed, Jasnah seems to indicate in chapter 36 of The Way of Kings that there are other animals with gemhearts of less impressive size.

The "yet powerful" part is rather curious. An insect-sized gemheart would hold practically no Stormlight at all. We already know that cutting can increase the Stormlight capacity of a gemstone: what if (and this is quite a stretch), somehow, beetle gemhearts are naturally cut? Though this is doubtful, it would be quite peculiar.

And now we know how Rosharan fireflies work: they just have transparent bodies!

Upvote simply for the concept of Rosharan fireflies with gemhearts!

A curious statement by child-Syl indeed, I wonder if it will portend anything larger for the story.

More curious to me is the night's cloak...

I almost wonder if Sanderson stuck that in as a reference to Rothfuss - especially given their playful competition.

Wait ... I'm sure I've read this idea somewhere. :)

Lately when I read a bit through some Kaladin-chapters I found this, when Syl prodded Kal about the blackbane leaves:

"Is it the heart of a beetle, so tiny yet powerful?"

Umm ... With a big, very big stretch one might say a beetle (not the car! :-)) is a very small miniature edition of a chull or a chasmfiend *cough*. But what of a beetle's heart could be "powerful" if it's not a very very small gemheart?

I stay with this idea though I can't give scientific explanations for it. I totally lost touch with the news here, did anyone ever ask BS about this?
