Worldbuilding for a world that I haven't named yet

The Sibling

Recommended Posts

So basically I've been doing a lot of worldbuilding, and I wanted to share it.

My word doesn't have a name yet because I feel like the name needs to be really good.

For now this is just sort of an introduction. I'm going to add more, but I wanted to get this done first. If anything doesn't make sense, if anyone has questions, or if anyone has advice oof constructive criticism, please feel free to share. Also if anyone has an idea for a name, that would be great.

Origin :

Spoiler

My world is created by the Two Powers. I don't call them gods because they had a finite amount of power which they use up by the end of this post. The Two Powers didn't exactly have names, but humanity named them. There was Skotai the Forsaken and Everin the Forgiver. Everin created the planet. From two planets which were were already in existence, Everin created an inhabitable planet where Skotai and Everin could create life. This used much of Everin's power, which meant that throughout the history of the planet Skotai was always more engaged with the inhabitants. Skotai had power to spare. Life started in the sea, independently of Everin or Skotai. Skotai and Everin both created many magical plants, which spread peacefully across the world. Evolution proceeded without tampering, leading to two primary intelligent species. Dragons and humans.

At the time, dragons were really just big lizards. It was Skotai who imbued the dragons with their own power. From that moment, the dragons could fly large distances without tiring, and there was fire burning in their hearts. But there was something that Skotai didn't expect. When the dragons gave birth, newly born dragons would suck magic from their surroundings. There was a limited amount of magic in the world, and Skotai had accidentally given the dragons the power to draw upon it. They could only draw upon it once in their lives, when they were born. If they were born in close proximity to magical plants they would become much more powerful, and the world around them would wither. Dragons took up residence on a large rocky continent called the Forsaken Lands, forced there by Skotai in an attempt to protect the ocean and other islands/continents from their mistake. Meanwhile, humans were spreading from island to island, until they discovered Fal-Crag.

Fal-Crag is the continent where most of the cool stuff happens. It was named for the falcons which are said to have welcomed the first boats to it's shores. It was covered in magical plants, due to the facts that the dragons had never found it. Humans colonized it, and their population exploded. The islands dwindled as Fal-Crag became the center of trade. But then, disaster struck.

The plague devastated humanity. It started in Pinerock, but spread quickly. There were few survivors, but Everin soon realized that it did not affect dragons. Everin had watched their mistake leave the Forsaken Lands barren and desolate. They had watched humanity pillage and burn and destroy Fal-Crag. Only the islands still held the most magnificent flora created by The Two Powers. The islanders still lived in harmony with magic, respecting everything Skotai had created. Skotai had minimal power left. They had spent it all terra forming and modifying the planet which Everin had created. Skotai used the last of their power to send a certain amount of dragons to the sea. Some were left to the Forsaken Lands, but most were cursed to forever patrol the oceans around Fal-Crag. The dragons assured no one left the continent, and the plague never spread to the islands. After that, Skotai faded into nothingness. Only Everin was left. Everin observed as the islanders lived and Fal-Crag died. They could not reverse what Skotai had done. The dragons would patrol the sea until the world ran out of magic to support their lives. If Everin had done nothing, perhaps everyone on the continent would have died. If they had acted sooner perhaps no one would have died. But Everin was reluctant to use their last power. Eventually, when all seemed lost, Everin sacrificed themself for the people of Fal-Crag.

Everin copied Skotai's actions. They imbued their power in the hearts of every human on Fal-Crag. Thus gave birth to the species known as the Elves. Elves are immune to the plague. Elves live somewhere between 200 and 1000 years, depended on how much power they draw upon when they are born. This moment fell into legend and was known simply as "The Gift". Someday, when the Elves have sucked all the power from the world, they will start giving birth to humans again. When an elf or a dragon dies, their power goes back to the world.

Introduction to the islands :

Larasan:

Spoiler

Larasan is a collection of islands named after Larasan, a queen who conquered the four islands just before Fal-Crag was discovered. Larasan was born on Sollert, the small island in the south of what is now Larasan. On Sollert, art was considered a holy craft. It was believed that there was one god, an artist, who had created humanity to spread her craft through the land. It was also said that dragons were the god's attempt at art. Dragons were revered whenever they flew over Sollert. Only the most royal and noble of people were allowed to create art. There was a royal family of artists. Some of the nobility could create art. Past that it was forbidden. Larasan was said to be a great artist. She was born to Aeroveth and Shaiya, King and Queen of Sollert. Larasan had a twin brother named Riywin. While Larasan showed great artistic promise, Riywin was incapable of producing even the most basic of techniques. He was however a natural born leader, built for the battlefield. By the time the twins came of age, Shaiya was dead. She had died of a violent cough, and was put to rest in a tomb designed by Larasan. When his children came of age Aeroveth stepped down. he was exhausted by his rule, and he trusted his children to maintain the peace between the distant islands. At the time Sollert had only recently discovered the three nearest islands. Trade was tentative as ship makers rushed to built better and faster ships which would help bridge the gap between the islands. When Aeroveth stepped down Larasan, being the elder of the twins, took the throne. Riywin was named master of Sollert's army. It was only months later that the war began. Larasan had vowed to conquer the nearby islands. The war was fast but brutal, as Riywin's ships went from village to village, pillaging and burning and waiting for the islanders to surrender.

Of the three other islands in Larasan, only one had the strength to challenge the greedy queen and her vicious brother. The two smallest islands to the north, Arundo and Arundine, held little more than fishing villages and small farms. The largest island of Larasan was called Crylan. Crylan was a large kingdom compared to Sollert. Crylings had learned to make use of the strange and magical plants created by Skotai and Everin. They had even on occasion befriended dragons willing to aid their cause. Crylan was divided into many small religions, each a variation of The Church of Blessings. The Church of Blessings essentially believes that if you perfect a skill, the gods (the Forsaken and the Forgiver*) would bless you. The Forsaken would bless those who perfected evil skills such as fighting and killing. Only a few churches encouraged the practice of those skills, most hated the Forsaken. The Forgiver would bless those who perfected skills such as farming, singing, painting, cooking, etc. The Forgiver encouraged creation and was worshipped by most. When Larasan's armies arrived on Crylan, they made it clear that those who they conquered were expected to stop creating art. This enraged the ordinarily peaceful people, and led to a rare alliance between the churches of the Forsaken and the Forgiver. The Crylings made a formidable opponent, but they weren't willing to go all the way. Crylan took prisoners and left survivors and offered peace treaties and compromises more than battles. Riywin burned their churches to the ground. Riywin didn't hesitate for a second before killing everyone he could get his hands on.

It wasn't long before Sollert, Crylan, Arundo, and Arundine were renamed Larasan. The Church of Blessings continued on Crylan, but art was forbidden and it soon faded to a vague superstition encouraging perfection and obedience. After the war, Riywin's bloodlust was not sated. He sailed out with a great fleet in search of new lands to conquer, and eventually stumbled upon Fal-Crag. He was the first to discover the Mainland. Since then, Crylan and Sollert's relationship has always been strained. there have been countless Crylan rebellions, and the island has begun to slowly regain some of it's independence. There is little doubt that someday Crylan will be free of Sollert's empire.

*It was the Crylings who named the Forsaken and the Forgiver. They realized that there were two gods, and quickly assigned values and powers to each one. In reality, Everin and Skotai do not offer blessings, nor does Skotai encourage violence and Everin creation. these attributes were invented by humanity.

The Sabre (This one is bold and I have no idea why, maybe because I copied it from a Google doc? I can't make it go away though.)

Spoiler

The Sabre is divided into three lands. These very different governments are often warring and have long and bloody histories. This close look will be set around when Fal-Crag was first discovered. I don’t have a timeline yet so sorry but there’s no year numbers.

The Lunite empire stands in the north of the Sabre. What was once several kingdoms is now a united empire. The Lunite Empire’s official religion is Lunaism. They worship the moons. Each child is assigned a job/life path based on the moon they were born under. The religion is a vicious one, stating that whoever is in power should be treated as a deity of sorts, and that only the strong should survive. The Lunite Empire is the strongest force on the sabre, but they are blocked by mountains which prevent them from moving south. The Lunites rarely trade with their southern neighbours.

The southern lands are much more united and friendly than the Lunites. The country of Gresh is one of the first democracies of the planet. Born out of a brutal and bloody revolution, this country is progressive and encourages peace between them and their neighbours, the Floraun people. Gresh primarily follows the wanderlust, or different variations of it. The Wanderlust encourages sharing and socialism and the idea that there is no one god but instead a power that connects the entire world. There are no Wanderlust churches. Worshippers look to the trees and plants to share their gratitude.

The Floraun kingdom is one of the oldest. The Floraun farmers hold many trade secrets on how to best use the magical plants of their world. They cooperate with nature to better themselves. The largest Steelwoods grow in Floraun, towing over the towns and sporting many a treehouse, where the nobility and royalty make their homes. The Floraun people have no official religion and the kingdom is a veritable patchwork quilt of religions and superstitions which are generally some combination of Wanderlust and Lunaism.

The Inker Island, the Takan Belt, and Alack'homai

Spoiler

The Inker islands is the furthest developed of all the islands. Next to it is Alack’homai, which is less densely populated but much further in terms of scientific advancement. Alack’homai is home to the most talented potion makers, which in this world really means people with enough knowledge to make proper use of the incredible flora offered by The Two Great Powers. Alack’homai and The Inker Island had struck a tenuous alliance at the time that Fal-Crag was discovered. The Takan belt is the islands which connect The Inker Island and Alack’homai. The Takan belt is neutral territory, belonging to the small tribes of fishers which populate them. The Takan belt is home to extremely talented ship makers and navigators. Their boats actually made it to Larasan and back, and once Riywin had discovered Fal-Crag boats hurried from the shores of the belt in search of the new continent.

The Inker Islands are the most aware of the Two Gods. They have documents dating back to long before even the dragons were gifted with magic. They are a very scientific people. Instead of priests or things like that, people devote their entire lives to science and to discovering the secrets of The Two Powers. The Inker Islands are named for a strange plant that grows in countless different colours on their island and on some of the Takan belt. The plant, most likely changed by Skotai, is filled with a thick and heavily pigmented liquid. The Inkers use this to give themselves temporary tattoos which last all day and are waterproof. There are tubers on the bottom of the same plants which are able to rub the ink off. The Inkers use tattoos more than clothes to express themselves, with different patterns and colour combinations representing different emotions and preoccupations.

The Alack’homai people are incredible potion makers. The Inkers call it witchcraft, but the Alack’homai people hold so much knowledge about the magical plants of their world that on their island, anything seems possible. The Alack’homai believe that they are descended from magical plants, and that they are the plants' gift to the world, to cultivate and to grow as much as possible.

Aurum and Argentum :

Spoiler

Aurum is an island where the plants grow gold. Aurumin people don’t believe in gender roles and there are no gendered pronouns in their language. The Aurumin people wear a lot of gold as they consider it a gift from one of their gods. The Aurumin gods are named after natural phenomena. The god of hurricanes, tsunamis, wind, sunlight, growth, etc. There are hundreds of stories about the Aurumin pantheon. The stories are carved into gold plates and displayed on the walls of houses. Aurumin was once made up of three kingdoms, but is now tentatively united.

Argentum is home to plants that grow silver (surprise surprise). It’s very similar to Aurum in regards to religion, although the stories are more often woven into tapestries.

the name should be falconiragon

That's cool but i feel like there are more humans than just on Fal-Crag so if it's name after Fal-crag and dragons it leaves out all of the islands.

I just added a lot more to the original post. now it explains the history of Larasan, the small collection of islands to the south. Also there is a very rough map.

I have an idea for the name of the world. Some combination of names of the two Demi-gods.

That's a really good idea. I'm trying to think of a good combination...

Everai?

Skoterin?

Actually I really like Everai. I think I might use that.
