Soulstamps

5 posts in this topic

So I’ve always liked soulstamps but was thinking what if u rewrote a knight radiants past so they had sworn more oaths.  Giving them armor or a blade temporarily. Would that even work or would the investiture interfere?

Probably would be incredibly difficult, not just Investiture interference but also deepening the bond would affect the spren too.

I think that the lack of additional Investiture from the stamp would be the major hurdle here. It's hard to stamp something heavily Invested in the first place:

Questioner

Could a Forger, like, reforge a Shardplate to look differently?

Brandon Sanderson

So here's the thing... Um, yes, *but*... Anything that is Invested is-- resists all of the forms of Investiture. And the level of Investiture in it determines how hard it is. Forging is one of these things that-- It's very hard to reforge things that are Invested. Not impossible though. So yes, *but*... Do you see what I'm saying? There's that-- there's a pretty significant "but" on that one.

But let's discount that. We'll also assume that the issue of Forgery working away from Sel has been fixed, and/or that a bonded Radiant is able to leave Roshar.

It would "work", in the sense that the stamp would take hold and change the Radiant, but the extra Investiture that comes from swearing more oaths wouldn't be there and so the practical effects of the higher oaths wouldn't be there either. @cometaryorbit also makes a great point that the oaths involve more than just the Radiant. You'd have to do something with the spren as well.

Here are a few WoBs on the topic, in no particular order:

Questioner

Soul Forging. Emperor's Soul. If one created the stamp properly, could you, using it, say, Windrunner you stamp, rewrote past to be Lightweaver. Possible?

Brandon Sanderson

That is possible and a little easier than a lot of other things. It's gonna run into problems... in that the Oaths are gonna be hard to align.

Questioner

Probably require some very fine crafting on the stamp.

Brandon Sanderson

Very fine crafting on the stamp. And there are certain people that they're just gonna have a hard time fitting into certain Orders. This is a lot easier though than just taking a random person and making them into one, because you're gonna already have Investiture that they've got.

Questioner

And have the basis of the First Oath.

Brandon Sanderson

Yeah. So this is not as hard as it might at first sound. It's the sort of thing that people in the cosmere are looking at. Like, being able to transfer magics between-- and things like that is one of very much interest in the cosmere.

Questioner (paraphrased)

Could Shai Soul Forge herself into becoming an Elantrian?

Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

That would be really hard. First of all, she'd have to change where she's born, then Soul Forge the fact that she became an Elantrian. Even then, she'd probably look like an Elantrian, but not have any powers. There would probably need to be some kind of bridge, or she would need some kind of super push from AonDor to make it work.

Questioner

Could a Forger re-write their history to adjust the kind of metal they burn as an Allomancer?

Brandon Sanderson

They could, but it actually wouldn't do anything, because the magic would not be able to replicate the other magic.

Questioner

So they would not be able to re-write history in the necessary way?

Brandon Sanderson

They would not be able to. I mean they could, but it wouldn’t have an effect, does that make sense? It would do nothing, it would be like you can create the stamp, the stamp would look like it was working but you just wouldn't end up with Allomancy.

because of quote 1 from returned I believe that it would make it so that they swore the oaths but and would give possibly give them the extra power but quotes 2 and 3 I don't think it would give them shards.
