As far as I know they're just different parts of speech.

Investiture is a noun: it's the state of something being Invested with energy from the Spiritual Realm, or the energy that is contained in someone or something.

Invested is an adjective: it describes a noun that has Spiritual Energy in it.

Investing is a progressive verb: it describes a noun being imbued with Investiture, by whatever mechanism.

Investiture is used by Taravangian to describe the effects of advancing people through the Nahel bond: "Care must be taken to avoid placing these subjects in situations of powerful stress unless you accept the consequences of their potential Investiture." (WoR, page 935). He is describing the risk of people becoming imbued with energy from the Spiritual Realm by developing the Nahel bond.

Invested is used by Zahel to describe a Highstorm: "One of those storms had come, Invested to the hilt and looking for a place to stick it." (WoR, page 398). Zahel is describing the Highstorm as being filled with energy from the Spiritual Realm.

I don't recall seeing the word Investing used this way in a Cosmere novel offhand, so I can't give an example of that one.

I have a pedantic quibble regarding the use of the word "energy" in this thread.

Investiture is not energy. It is its own thing, an extra parameter in thermodynamics. Our world has matter, energy and momentum. The Cosmere has matter, energy, momentum and Investiture. Investiture can be converted into energy, but it is not, itself, energy.

Questioner

Is Scadrial losing mass when people burn metals?

Brandon Sanderson

Yes, technically it is, but Investiture is another dimension to matter.

Questioner

So it doesn't lose mass, it becomes Investiture?

Brandon Sanderson

It becomes Investiture... Basically, when you go into the cosmere, we've got matter, we've got energy here. You've got matter, energy, and Investiture there, and you can get things out of Investiture back into matter, and stuff like that. There's always energy, there's entropy, there's always diffusement... it's basically, add to the laws of thermodynamics a third item, and that's how we word it.

@ReturnedWell then what does it say if when they use nicrosil, they stored the ability of feruchemy with weight, and nicrosil stores investiture, is having the ability to use different forms of investiture means that they are always using investiture? for example, they are a surge binder, with nicrosil, would it store the ability to use said surge?

potentially, yes, it could.  if you somehow had someone with access to nicrosil ferruchemy and surgebinding, they could store their ability to use surgebinding - though the exact details of what that would look like aren't 100% clear. also whoever tried to use it later would still need access to stormlight or some other form of investiture in order to fuel the surgebinding.

so, with that in mind, is both the ability and the... item is regarded both as investiture? so then if that's the case, could nicrosil also store things such as stormlight, and breaths, or even aons(or whatever the investiture is on sel)?

Storing stormlight in metal is described as being hard. You can hide Breath in metal without needing to Awaken it but you don't need a metalmind for that because it's an inherent property of how BioChroma works. Aons aren't themselves a kind of Investiture you can store, instead they serve the same purpose that metal does on Scadrial in that it tells the Dor what you want the Investiture to do, except that AonDor is much more like computer programming while the allomantic metals are more like a program you run.

We do know you could potentially use feruchemy to give an Elantrian access to the Dor while far from the city (via Connection, which is F-Duralumin not F-Nicrosil) but it would involve jumping through hoops, you'd need to already be an Elantrian for that to work and Brandon says that would be the harder way to do it.
