Wither-hunt - The Fight for Mendahar

Zephrun’s Imperium

Recommended Posts

Okay, I just had a huge influx of RP ideas, and this one just happened to be the first one I decided to pop down onto the internet.

Let's set the scene.

The year is 1429 on a planet somewhere (I think it could be fun to RP new years eve, with the turn of the decade at some point in the RP), the height of the middle ages in the kingdom of Mendahar. (Yes, this is a Masquerade prequel, fight me. No, you do not have to know anything about Masquerade to participate) The king's firstborn happened to be a girl of great magic abilities, but with a fragile mind. She has since been exiled, both for her powers, and her less-than-ideal mental state. Presently, a would-be-king tries to overthrow the kingdom with a group of lackeys promised positions of power. The princess (Nyx Thadel - my character) can be manipulated into joining their forces.

Anyway, please let me know if there's any interest, and I'd love to start this up! This can go any number of directions, and will probably have a Mistborn-y feel with the crew and whatnot. Plus, there's room for lots of people to participate!

Name: Nyx Thadel
Appearance: 5'6'', black hair, brown eyes
Details: The firstborn of King Thadel, Nyx is insane, has a bad stutter, and possesses powerful magic that she hardly knows how to control. She will often destroy things by accident. Think Scarlet Witch. She was thrown out of the castle once her powers and mental state became known to her royal parents. They hoped her less-than-princess-like state would be covered up and lost in the memory of the people, but it was not.
Personality: Very forward and sassy, absolutely shameless
Skills: Enjoys gardening and potion making.

This sounds pretty cool, I'm in!

Name: Nerevat Mirtam

Appearance: young, about 23 years old. 5'9", has brown hair not quite past his ears, green eyes

Skills: Inexperienced fighter, but is good with a bow from days hunting in the woods. Also has experience picking locks and sneaking in places where he shouldn't be

Details/History: Nerevat Mirtam was born to a large family who lived on a small farm in the outskirts of the village of Whiteriver. He spent most of his childhood and early teen years doing farm chores, hunting, and going into the village for festivals, markets, etc. He became very skilled with the bow from hunting deer and rabbit in the forests around the farm, and he even won a few archery competitions at some village festivals. However, when his farm was attacked and burned to the ground by highwaymen, Nerevat was the sole survivor, escaping only by luck and his bowmanship. That night was the first night he had ever killed a man, using his bow to strike down one of the brigands in order to escape. With no home and no family, Nerevat walked to the city of Rodna. Poverty is rampant, and Nerevat has only been able to survive by his wits. He has taught himself how to pick pockets, pick locks, and how to escape detection from those that would do him harm. Only by caring for himself, and himself only, has he been able to survive.

Personality: Surprisingly optimistic all of the time, and despite the hardships he has faced, he is still fairly innocent (somehow). Can be embarrassed very easily but isn't afraid to stick up for himself.

Three...? A dynasty is a single family in charge. So if the current royal family is overthrown and replaced with a brand new monarch, that's a new dynasty. Riva's not that old, is she?

They wouldn't have electric lights at this point, so their best shot is some form of magic.

Mendahar is notiriously unstable. It's king Thadel (Riva's grandfather), then the Thadel's get overthrown by Jahr (Riva's father), who is overthrown by Karreck, who is overthrown by Caruzar, who is overthrown by Ivian. Riva is 89 at the time of Masquerade

Huh. When did that change? The most recent timeline I was aware of was Ivian's ancestors overthrowing the line of true heirs and ruling for many generations.

The Character:

Spoiler

Name: Ilektchi (Eye-letch-ee, or just Ledge to folks who don't like more than one syllable) Poliar

Appearance: Very aggressively average-sized, with massive muscles and gorgeous hair (think "slightly shorter Chris Hemsworth"). He wears the Mendahar soldier uniform, but with a slightly different overall design (I'll figure out what it is at some point )to distinguish him as a Wither Hunter. When he's got his gear on he has a massive backpack full of supplies, a belt set with tins of gunpowder, a few lighters vibin' at his chest pocket, and a number of large torches hanging from the backpack's sides.

Spoiler

627144ac604f6_IlektchiPoliar.jpg.004c0a07a3adc59c75a92fd580e3f218.jpg

Details: He's an experienced captain in the field of Withergeist hunting. His mother happened to be somewhat capable of taking out weak Withers herself, using what--to this day--he can only describe as "a homebrew method." His father was an alcoholic and left before Ilektchi could remember, but his uncle was nice enough to help provide for the family (possibly due to the brothers' old and constant arguments over the girl (yes, it was a Dalinar/Gavilar/Navani situation)).

Personality: Pretty chipper on most days. Between adventures he'll drink, flirt, party, dance, etc... but while he's out on the field, he's a completely different person. The soldiers call him "Ol' Coinhead" to describe his dual nature, though more often they'll refer to him as "Captain Ashes" (or some variation of that) to refer to his skill.

Skills: All his skills are in the art of slaying Withergeists, which will be explained in the other big ol' spoiler box.

The Squad:

Spoiler

Context: So--surprise surprise--Star and I are currently writing a Masquerade novel of sorts. We decided to compartmentalize, giving her all the romance and drama and such (things I'm really bad at writing), and giving me all the magic and action and fighting and such (things that she's really bad at writing). That much was fine, but we soon encountered a problem: there wasn't any action in Masquerade to write in the first place.

I'm not gonna go through the process (that'd take too long), so I'll just tell you our solution: Withergeists. If Mendahar was being under somewhat-constant assault by the Withers, then I could write some epic anime-style Wither-slaying crew action. I don't know just how realistic it'd be for regular peoples to fight off Withergeists, but I think I've devised a decent enough system to make it at least seem viable.

So, without further ado, here ya are!

The Withergeist Hunters' Militia

For those of y'all not in the know, withergeists are one of the ancient founding creatures of this universe. They're creatures of darkness, capable of bonding with people to grant them epic darkness powers. They're incredibly destructive when left unchecked (unless when they're bonded, in which case they're extremely dangerous in any situation). However, they are weak to light to an extent.

So here's how the militia works.

Each crew (lemme know if you can think of any cooler words than 'crew') consists of at least six people, but can get up to twelve. At the very least, it's essential that there's an even number. Other than regular combat experience and soldier-ness, Withergeist Hunters are masters of wielding specially-made torches to fend off withergeists. The torches use an extremely bright-burning oil that wards withergeists away. They work in pairs to corner or surround individual geists, keeping it contained.

In the case that all goes smoothly, they will perform a quick cleansing ritual to send them "back to Mal." This works pretty consistently on the weak, unbonded ones. However, sometimes things get a little out of hand. In that situation, the Hunters break out the big guns: tossing spark powder (gunpowder) and lighting it mid-air to create small explosions. The sudden bursts of heat and light are enough to weaken them enough to retry the ritual, or potentially even kill them.

The absolute worst of situations is if a Withergeist bonds a person. This grants a body to the power, which means that actual combat is required. Hunters are required to be weapons' specialists because of this, using hooked swords and spears to lock their weapons onto the target (this is due to the inhuman healing abilities that the withergeists grant as well as to hold onto the target). There's almost always a massive amount of destruction in the general area if this occurs, which is why withers are to be driven away from populated areas at any cost--even a Hunter's life.

That's all the protocol I can think of rn. I'll probably tack more into the lore as we go along. But anyways, we need at least five more members for Ilektchi's crew. I'm more than willing to take on any unfilled slots, but I'd kinda rather not.

I'll update this as folks join:

Nerevat Mirtam - Kvothe

Spoiler

Name: Nerevat Mirtam

Appearance: young, about 19 years old. 5'9", has brown hair not quite past his ears, green eyes. Wears a Mendahar uniform with a bow, quiver, and few torches strapped to his back. On his belt he holds a lighter but no gunpowder (no one trusts him to handle it correctly yet) as well as a long steel dagger.

Skills: Somewhat inexperienced, but specializes in bowmanship and dagger usage in close quarters combat. Has been trained in the art of Hunter torches, but is inexperienced in using the torches in combat

Details/History: Nerevat Mirtam was born to a large family who lived on a small farm. He spent most of his childhood and early teen years doing farm chores, hunting, and going into the village for festivals, markets, etc. He became very skilled with the bow from hunting deer and rabbit in the forests around the farm. Less than a year ago, his family was attacked and killed by Withergeists, leaving Nerevat as the sole survivor. Vowing to avenge his family, Nerevat enlisted with the Withergeist Hunters' Militia a few months ago. In those months, he has been trained in many weapons, but prefers using a bow and a dagger when he needs to. He was also trained in using Hunter torches and is of average skill. Nerevat is still the "new guy" and is yet to prove himself to the team.

Personality: Surprisingly optimistic all of the time, and despite the hardships he has faced, he is still fairly innocent. Can be embarrassed very easily but isn't afraid to stick up for himself.

Duo 2:

Tam Tarkar - Xinoehp

Murk - Experience

Duo 3:

Yonath - Frustration

Linus - Matrim
