+Oltux72
Quote He’d have been confused to hear that comparison, as he’d never heard of such lands as those. In fact, his people had only just begun to think about whether or not their planet was alone in the cosmere. Quote Painter had always thought Tojin looked incomplete, as if the Shards had taken an unfinished person and rounded up. The Shards? How do they know about Shards if they have no idea about the wider Cosmere? Did the local Shard once have a priesthood telling stories about the wider Cosmere which they have demoted to myths?

From Painter's perspective if he was saying this in his own voice he would have probably said "Painter had always thought Tojin looked incomplete, as if the Gods had taken an unfinished person and rounded up." Hoid knows (as well as his audience) that Gods=Shards so that is the word he used in the story.
