Now you've got me curious if you can modify Aethers by putting wire cages around them. :P

If I had to guess, probably not, beyond Aluminum almost certainly doing something to them...

Though now you've got me wondering, do the metal cages used in fabrials only apply to lesser spren captured in gemstones, or d the allomantic metals have direct effects on all sorts of 'Type 1 Invested Entities' in the Cosmere?

i suppose it depends on how broadly the principle of metals affecting Investiture applies.

Quick, put an Aviar in a pewter birdcage! :D

Well looks like Verdant is safe, Night probably became Midnight, and Amberite probably made it.

The lady loves Hemalurgy and thinks it's cool to watch the death of a Shard. Seems she's a bit desensitized to some things by now.

I mean, isn't she like five thousand or something at this point?

Also, does she love Hemalurgy or does she just find it fascinating? And did she know of non-lethal hemalurgy when she said that?

Just like Aviars or Allomancy. That is the default.

Yes, because magic being tied to something in the SR is the default.

You know, the idea that there might be 12 different aethers gives me an idea. Because aside from Night and Illuminous, all of the aethers we know of map pretty well to one of the ten essences:

  • Amberite: Lucentia (or maybe Talus, but it seems more like a crystal than stone)
  • Verdant: Pulp
  • Bestarin: Sinew
  • Ferrous: Foil
  • Aether of Wind (which I've only heard hearsay of on the forums here): Zephyr

So if we take in the ten essences and tack on dark and light, that gives us a total of twelve themes. And we've already seen there's some overlap in mechanics between different magic systems, like the metal cages used in making fabrials correlating to allomantic metals.

Not entirely sure I'm onto something, but I do like the idea.

Looks like 12 is right

Gonna hazard a guess that the Crimson sea is the Blood Aether, then?

Huh... What was the color of the Aether stain that Mraize posed as a challenge to clean up, again? Was it red??

The Aether Mraize had in his coloection was pink, does anyone remember a pink sea?

So watching the Livestream either the name has changed, or there is now a Rosite Aether.

Could be a slip up, but still an interesting tidbit. Along with getting confirmation that how Aethers worked in AoN, people bonding themselves to a gem, it grafting itself to the hand and then producing stuff from the crystal is how the Aethers still functions as a magic system.

Though that brings to question the Aethers where you became a living machine or being able to graft beast parts to yourself since, that is not how those Aethers worked given Brandon's synopsis. Would those be the ones Brandon has stated on being scraped in possible favor of a more streamline process like how Verdant and Amberlite worked?

Amber and Gold look awfully similar.

What is Amber? And how can you use it?

Seems that the name changed, since he used roseite as an example of one that works the same way as it did in Aether of Night (Prime?), but obviously nothing named "roseite" existed in it. And despite the name, Amberite in AoN was rose-colored, so probably that one.

This is the first time I hear about an Aether of Wind, where can I find the discussion? Was it theorized before TOTES?

It would provide a pretty good explanation of how the seas of spores are fluidised, that's why I ask.

My take: maybe the region around the "Lunagree of wind" has some mechanism that allows the spores to seep down the planet's crust and reach aquifers. When in contact with water, the spores produce air that escapes through the planet's crust, maybe through narrow tunnels that flow into the other seas, generating the necessary setup for fluidisation (ignoring possible erosion and excess of pressure xd).

We know incredibly, incredibly little about the Aether of Wind, only that it was an early prototype of Syl's character alluded to in an (unpublished) project that Brandon did a little bit of work on called Climb the Sky back in the early 2000s. Big props to @Pagerunner for having done the legwork to find and compile what we do know.

That said, I really like your theory, especially since someone else has now gotten a "kinda" confirmation on the same theory I had up there, that the Essences and Aethers follow the same patterns. I've been puzzling over for a while now how the fluidization would work, since you'd need some sort of Investiture at play to avoid the planet from running out of pressurized air, and having wind-aligned spores that produce pressurized gas sounds like a very tidy answer to that question.

haven't seen all this covered and gotta dump some random theories before I can sleep..... please expand if anything seems legit. point out issues please. sooo much content and I can't keep up

  • Aethers are related to fainlife in dragonsteel prime (which like most I haven't read...)
  • they are spreading throughout the cosmere as emergent intents (I think there is some WOB that says investiture will develop its own intent if left alone) - proto shard?
  • some existed before the shattering and do not believe they were created by Adonalsium. either they are wrong or it's a technicality and they mean they developed out of raw "naturally dispersed" investiture without a vessel and intent
  • does this mean yolen is the core aether world?
  • we have seen (heard reference to?) them on published worlds before (white sand lichen?/ "the evil" on threnody?/ midnight essence?)
  • they have been evolving and new versions will appear over large spans of time
  • Cultivation has a plan to leverage them in some way because cultivation.....

Brandon has had Aether's appear on Yolen in the past.

Mraize had an Aether in WoR, spilled one on his clothes in OB and Khriss mentions them in the Ars Arcanum in RoW
