Could the black piper be Hoid?

I think this is what a lot of people’s immediate thought was, however Brandon has said it’s not Hoid. The speculation continues!

Questioner

So, when Cenn dies, and he says "The Black Piper in the night, he holds us in the palm, playing a tune no man can hear." Is that a reference to Hoid?

Brandon Sanderson

No. Good question!

Ah, but you see, this theory suffers from a single, terrible logical error!

Well I guess that is much more logical than a giant stone hand coming out of the mountain hahaha

What do you think the meaning could be of "he holds us in his palm?"

Perhaps it's metaphorical? It would line up with Mr. T's whole "win no matter what the opponent does" idea. Either that, or thunderclast.

this is funny :P

i do like the idea that maybe the contest of champions isn't actually a contest of weapons

i think that has some actual real merit

maybe

yeah ik

but to the death doesn't necessarily mean a literal duel with weapons

could be something else that still results in death

it probably will just be a literal duel, but ya never know

Have you seen philosophy debates? Listening to those can probably kill someone.

I've been thinking of it more and more as similar to the ending of WoT, with Dalinar and TaravOdium conjuring new realities using Fortune and Connection shennanigans (like Kaladin's Tien vision) to try and convince each other (i.e. more of a "battle of philosophies).

but either way these could be fought with flutes, perhaps both sides bring really long flutes to use as quarterstaffs while they play, or they use them to tell stories like Hoid does, to try and convince each other using song.

It could be a fire contest between Dalinar and Evi.
